Since this is the pet forum I feel like we could do with a good pit bull thread. While GBS likes to show their goony fear of the outside world by proclaiming all bully breeds to be horrifying time bombs, I think the pet forum probably has a slightly more realistic view of what they actually are.

Based on googling I've found that pit bulls have been used for everything under the sun from bull baiting to even herding. They started out as butcher's dogs but when bull baiting became defunct they found a new purpose as "nanny dogs;" using their extreme bravery and gentility to protect children. People trusted them with their own babies.

What went wrong? In short, dog fighting. sometime during the late 19th century some vile thugs decided that the pit bulls strength and versatility would make it do just fine as a fighting dog. Through feeding them drugs, beating them, starving them, you name it, they taught these good dogs that the only way to survive was to be violent and fight for their master. When they lost they were tortured, brutalized, and killed for the embarrassment their loss brought to their owner.

From what I've read it seems like this went on throughout the 20th century even though dog fighting was illegal. Pit bulls became known for their violence and propensity towards mauling children. They made headlines and were banned in most places and no one wanted to own one.

What changed things? Basically, Michael Vick. That cause put pit bulls back into the spotlight and hearing the horrors of dog fighting seemed to make the world realize that the real monster in this scenario was people. Since then, hundreds of rescues have formed to restore the name of the pit bull dog, and guess what? turns out that when you take these dogs out of abusive, violent, blood sport setups, they very quickly go back to the nanny dogs of yore. Pit bulls are finding favor again as therapy dogs, pets, and even police dogs. Rescues are creating networks to save as many as possible and as word and examples of the pit bulls ability to be no different from any other dog spreads; the breed is finally recovering and people are learning the truth about what a pit bull really is.

Surely we have pit bull owners in PI who would like to share their amazing dogs. Post your pits here!

BSL (discrimination against different breeds of dogs) is so common and its so sad. I mean if you think about it, how is it any different from racism? It's illegal to discriminate against humans of different skin colors and background so why is a dog any different? Luckily, times are changing and there is a LOT of BSL being overturned across the US. As long as everyone continues to fight we will be able to continue to show people that banning a dog based on looks is wrong. Raise them to be good, and they will be. The ability of former fighting dogs to turn around and even become therapy dogs themselves is proof of what a little love and some positive training can do.

No Mr. Bond,
I expect you to die.
Here is my latest rescue baby. She was horribly abused, fed gunpowder and used as a bait dog, so she has some trust issues, but she's doing fine here and is already doing a great job protecting my little one. I just can't understand how people can harm these sweet little dogs! Let's pray she can be rehabilitated fully.

Wow, she's gorgeous! I'm so sad someone cut off her ears though. Really drives home how horrible dog fighting is, since I have read they cut off the ears for fighting. What a pretty girl, in spite of her scars. Thank you for rescuing, she looks so happy with you!

tldr; Antipitbull anti pet*anything for the average human being.

Gonna Try to chime in here. First I love dogs. I don't generally like pit-bulls. You ask how breed-specific legislation is different from racism? Well, you can look across many species of fauna and notice that various breeds exhibit certain tendencies. Chickens? Rhode Island Reds are generally at the species level more friendly than many other species of chickens (there's over 200). Lizards? A chinese water dragon is much more appropriate for a less experienced handler (due to a breed specific temperament) than say a komodo dragon...or even a sudan plated lizard. Snakes? You don't hear about corn snakes killing owners, however ball-pythons occasionally strangle children, and venomous snakes require state licenses to handle/own.

The simple fact is the pit bull breed was selectively inbred for fierce competitive features that make it an extremely strong dog with a penchant for volatility towards those outside of the pack. The problem with pitbulls then isn't really the able-bodied intelligent and *dilligent* owner, but rather with the neglectful, permissive, or physically infirm owner.

Considering many parents are drugging their children rather than actually establishing a functional discipline system and parenting style (hint: permissive is BAD and causes chaos) and it's not so much as a blind hatred of pitbulls

I think there are many people who just realize that there are a LOT of really underqualified human beings who do not have any business taking care of anything other than wiping their own arz ....and for some reason they all seem to think they need to buy a pitbull and it becomes it's own self fulfilling destiny.

On another note, all dogs like other animals and humans get older, and that respect for structure and memory/cognizance often can become lost especially in old age and they can unleash the full fury of the core wolf-breed while having an incredibly powerful bite and dominating physique.

I believe a pit bull owner should have to take a course (sort of like a gun safety or hunting license) and pay an annual fee for the *priviledge* of owning a biological weapon, which is what I type-cast the breed at due to the quality of owners in our society.

Then....maybe I won't mind seeing pitbulls running untethered through hoarder houses while children run around without any adult supervision.

Wait so when I take my dog to the dog park, there's this one pit bull that's always off leash and hates all other dogs and tries to start fights pretty constantly; are you saying that this isn't normal behaviour for a pit, or that it is because now they've turned into fighting machines? I mean it's never tried to start a fight with any of the kids at the park, only the other dogs. Is it badly bred? I'm confused.

Certain breeds are over-represented in bite statistics. This is partially because of innate traits due to breeding - retrievers want to retrieve, sleighdogs want to pull etc - but also because of upbringing. Terrible people that want mean dogs buy pitbulls, mistreat them, then they become mean.

No matter the cause you can look at certain dog breeds, bite statistics, and get a pretty good idea that, while any particular dog within that breed is probably fine, on average they are way more likely to bite then any other given breed.

This is different from racism because, er, good point.

pit bulls are sweet babies :)

How!
Oct 29, 2009

Mine is so friendly that she ends up annoying other dogs until they snap at her, then she cowers in a corner for 15 seconds before trying to play again.

When we walk past a yard of Schnauzers they bark like hell, and she just tries to run the gently caress away like a scared baby. It's pathetic.

Some kid stole my motorcycle out of my yard, and she didn't even bark. Probably licked the little punks butthole, even.

Thanks for reading.

Good friend of mine has a pit bull. Sweetest dog I've ever met. Total couch potato.

Though he wasn't socialized particularly well so he will bark at strangers until he is introduced to them. Then he becomes a total bro lap dog.

Point is pit bulls are cool and good.

That's what i'm saying :350:

He was originally owned by "a rich guy on the mountain" and he was traded for construction work. He was the family dog in a white trash family. They beat him from what I can tell from his manners and the 2 scars on his face. They eventually couldn't make the payments on the house and left him there. He was there so long that the bank who was selling the house was familiar with my dog. I found him in the garage with a bucket of cheap kibble.

This is a picture from one of his first winters with me
