So is Nagorno-Karabakh a region that regularly has this amount of violence. I know its heavily contested, but is this different from usual?

"Russian President Vladimir Putin, meanwhile, urged all sides to cease firing and "show restraint", Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies."

What a pussy, Erdogan is clearly the largest man in the region. For shame Putin!

I seriously hope this doesn't escalate, last thing we need is another proxy war. But based on the recent Syria deescalation and this comment it seems that maybe Russia is not willing to enter another territorial conflict.

Can someone with more knowledge of the region write a small summary about this?

I'm almost wondering if this is related to Putin's pulldown in Syria.

Putin pulled down in Ukraine, then the Syrian intervention happened. Now Putin is winding things down in Syria, and this conflict sparks up again.

Probably only this many people are killed in flare ups annually -- this is the biggest single-day battle since 1994.

Yeah, but to be fair, Azerbaijan didn't have the support from Iran that they were expecting as well. One of the most telling episodes to date in the Iranian regime's foreign policy, might I add.

Azerbaijani-Turkish relations are not as warm as many people assume, and if anything Azerbaijani is far more of a deeply nationalist hermit state that doesn't get along with really anyone. Most Azerbaijanis seem see Turkey as a "frenemy" that shouldn't be fully trusted. I think portraying the conflict as a Russian-Turkish proxy war if anything is not just simplifying the situation but actually just rather false period. If anything it is the continuation of a conflict that goes back to the Russian Civil War.

As far as Karabakh, tensions have been ramping up for the past 2 years to go along with the sudden drop in oil and this is one of a series of skirmishes that have taken place. The Manat [Azerbaijan's currency] has more than halved in value, and the temperature is rising in Baku. Azerbaijan itself is nearly a totalitarian state, and if anything an economic collapse has made the regime much more vulnerable than the past.

They are rather ambivalent, relations between Azerbaijan-Iran are still workable at this point and in all honest, the two groups have diverged pretty significantly. Azerbaijanis in Azerbaijan are generally secular, and middle/upper class Azerbaijanis often speak Russian and commonly use Turkish/English. Azerbaijani spoken itself in Azerbaijan also has become quite different and has been heavily influenced by Turkish and Russian [linguistically] and uses a Latin script [after it has been changed about a half a dozen times]. Life in Baku is far closer to life in the rest of the former Soviet Union, and in all honesty, the two cultures have diverged quite a bit. There are obviously still connections between the two, and Iran Azerbaijanis often come to Baku for a good time or to look for a bride, but any real honest attempt at uniting the two died out in the twenties [beyond a puppet state in Northern Iran backed by Stalin].

Fortunately NATO's mutual defense provisions are only triggered by attacks on the member itself, not its allies, so there won't be a cascading effect if the absolute worst happens and it gets real. Wonder if Putin's getting frisky because he knows how much Obama loving hates Erdogan; I can't imagine Turkey getting anything out of the US if it asked for help, besides some advice on where to stick it.

I can't add much to this, other than to point out this article from 2005 that seems well informed on the issue. The tl;dr is that it's the result of the inability of anyone else to act as an effective mediator between two conflicting (and fabricated) national narratives.
