Update on FIA: Failing to conduct proper due diligence on customers is no small matter. Mossack Fonseca was forced to write letters in 2010 and 2013 to the Financial Investigation Agency, explaining why the law firm resigned in 2010 as registered agent for two shell companies whose place of business was Pyongyang, North Korea. That is an obvious red flag given U.N. sanctions on the nation over its program to develop nuclear weapons. North Korea today is believed to be perfecting a compact nuclear warhead that can be delivered on a ballistic missile.

Considering their clientele, these two clowns could end up dead by a "heart attack" before they ever testify to anything.

The default position on offshores should be "prove you're not a camel comrade." It may not be illegal in all cases, but the number of "legitimate" uses is pretty small.

The Australian Tax Office (ATO) is investigating 800 Australian residents named in a massive leak of tax and financial records known as the Panama Papers.

The investigation follows the unprecedented leak of more than 11 million documents from Panamanian Law Firm Mossack Fonseca, obtained by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and shared with media organisations around the world including the ABC's Four Corners program.

The ABC has identified more than 1,000 Australian links in the data, which contains personal details including copies of the passports of hundreds of Australians.

In a statement, deputy tax commissioner Michael Cranston said the information included "some taxpayers who we have previously investigated, as well as a small number who disclosed their arrangements with us".

"It also includes a large number of taxpayers who haven't previously come forward, including high wealth individuals, and we are already taking action on those cases," he said.

The ATO said of the 800 Australian citizens found, 120 of them have been linked to an associate offshore service provider located in Hong Kong.

An ABC analysis has found 418 Australian individual passports in the documents linked to hundreds of companies through dozens of offshore service providers.

Maybe I don't understand it correctly. Are these shell companies that have been opened up your individuals? That per se is nothing special right? Don't you have to dig deeper and see what the activity of those accounts are to have a conclusion of corruption?

P.much. The whole idea of offshoring is to use shells to hide money, mostly to evade taxes or hide dirty money. Using an offshore is not evidence corruption in and of itself, but it's shady as hell and extremely unlikely to be legit in any way, because if it's legit, why hide it?

Shell companies need to disassociate the money from you, right? So it wouldn't really make any sense to have the shell company's address be something that has anything to do with you. And since it's a fake company, the address can just be pretty much anywhere and it can run out of a PO box or whatever. Wyoming sounds like a good place to put a bunch of fake companies.

Not entirely true. There's a few legitimate uses of offshore accounts. Setting up joint ventures and things like that. Or just wanting privacy. But I would say that setting up an offshore through Mossack Fonseca is very suspicious given what this company apparently existed to do.

So if few Americans are part of this it's probably because they don't do business with a firm that seems to specialize in avoiding sanctions or something, rather than a massive media conspiracy.

However, even the Guardian allowed the White House to edit Snowden articles so feel free to be paranoid.

Jacob Appelbaum who helped publish pieces in the UK and Germany based on Snowden's leak, went hard against journalists who mishandled different leaks and brings up the above example.
