With the release of Season 3 of Killer Instinct as well as the PC port, I wanted to go ahead and start fresh with a new thread. After seeing a bit of positive buzz from you guys playing, I wanted to get some resources for a lot of the newer players.

What is Killer Instinct?

Killer Instinct is a Free to Play fighting game for the Xbox One and Windows 10. Originally helmed by Double Helix, Iron Galaxy took over the second season and have turned the game around. The game is divided into 3 seasons of 9 characters. The game rotates the free character weekly giving players to test out the cast without heavily invested. Characters can be bought in individuals seasons for 20 dollars or peace meal. A complete edition of the game with all 3 current seasons is being sold for 50 dollars. The game is both cross-play and cross-buy. Anything you buy on the Xbox One version carries into the Windows 10 version and vice versa.

How Does it Play?

Killer Instinct is unique from most fighters due to the way its combo system works. Combo's can be broken with specific button presses allowing a smart player to make a comeback from a particularly vicious attack. A lot of higher level play is based around this. The risk/reward system balances more damaging combos having a better chance to be broken. The longer your chain, the more chances an opponent has to knock you out of it. This is also balanced by the lockout systems. If your opponent makes a bad read they get locked out of another combo breaker for a set amount of time depending on the strength of the button. The general combo system also has a specific flow that looks like this:

Opener ->auto double/manual->Linker->Ender

There is a fair amount of variation between those, but that is what your general combo flow should look like. Combos are not infinite and each move of the string puts players closer to what is called a blowout. A blow out occurs when the player does too many hits in a combo without cashing out their damage with an ender. Cashing your combo out adds a significant damage boost and leaves your opponent at disadvantage. Letting your opponent blow out puts them at a small advantage and can kill momentum. I'll be giving some links to a better explanation of the systems in the next post.

Features
Killer Instinct is one of the more robust and fully featured fighting games. Some of the cooler stuff includes:
-Fully fleshed out tutorial
-Shadow A.I system that lets players play AI versions of themselves
-A plethora of training modes and options including full combo breaker training, hitboxes, frame data
-Character move lists include frame data for everything
-Fairly diverse roster of playstyles and skill sets
-Extensive Ranked league with tiers, options for best of 3 and 8 player lobby support

Controller Support
Killer Instinct right now only supports XB360 fight sticks with XB1 coming at a later date. For the rest of us who have PS3/4/etc sticks, this guide will help you make it possible to use those via XOutput. It's what I personally use and it is similar to what you have to do to make PS4 sticks work for SFV.

Where do I start with learning the game

As stated in the prior post, the actual game tutorial is the best place for a new player. It is incredibly comprehensive and covers every system the game has in depth. It's an excellent resource. Once you feel comfortable with that, we move on to a different source material.

The Guide
Infil's SF Players Guide to Killer Instinct is by far the best resource for the game. It covers the finer points of the combat system as well as extensive guides for every single character in the game. It features gifs, videos and numerous explanations for anything you want to know about the game. It also is what the character descriptions I'm using come from. The guide can be found here:

Still training..
SFV refugee reporting in. I have only paid attention to KI with mild amusement until now. The pc version is a great port and the game has a truly sick feature set for a fighting game. I am extremely impressed.

I've actually barely played any matches in this so far because the super open ended nature of the combo systems (having to pluralize that word is strange!) is overloading my baby street fighter brain that is used to short combos and obvious optimizations. I think a ton of the design decisions in this game are really smart and others are at least interesting risks to have taken. I think it's obvious the devs understand a lot about what makes fighting games fun and also competitively solid. The level of detail in the patch notes also shows a level of competency I am not used to seeing from game devs in general (particularly Capcom-housed ones) and is definitely not what I expected from a pseudo-f2p title.

Anyway I'm saying this game seems really cool so please give it a try!

Hello! I see you.

Whoa. I thought KI was generally considered a Really Bad Game(tm) around here, so I certainly didn't expect to ever see a thread for it. I'm glad there is one now, though, because even with its issues it's been my favorite Xbox One game since launch. I need to get in on season 3 action and try out the PC version as well, so you all can kick the poo poo out of me with 280-hit ultras.

KI S1 seemed pretty poo poo but once Iron Galaxy took over they kind of made a decent game out of it. I mean as decent as a KI could probably be. I'm enjoying it.

The Suffering of the Succotash.
In spite of it's reputation as a game that's only about long, flashy combos and garish particle effects, KI is actually a deep game about player psychology, footsies (yes, you can win with just footsies), zoning, rushdown, mixups, and meaningful player choice. Unless you make mistake or a bad guess during a combo, at no point during a match are you a passive observer to your rear end getting kicked. Similarly, if you're dishing out the combo, you're not reduced to being a meat robot pushing buttons to make an optimized combo happen, because the other guy has a say in if you'll succeed. In fact, the optimal damage combo can often be the least successful option you can choose, because it will almost always be the easiest to break.

I like KI a lot because it isn't a rock, paper, scissors guessing game, but because it's a game where you have to make decisions that will be rewarded or punished depending on if you got them right.

Game is fun and worth playing. Europe to USA is more than playable, it's great. Lots of bad players to grind on while picking the game up. I hope SFV picks up within the next 6 months because the features this game has just poo poo all over what Capcom has offered.

Nothing if you want to download the game and play the free rotational character in all game modes, 5 bux if you want to buy one character,20-40 buxx plus your prejudices if you want to buy the larger packages. At this time, the most you can spend on the game is something like 50 dollars, which gets you every character from every season and every money costume accessory.

I'm enjoying the game even though I don't have the money at the moment to play anyone other than the free character. I've managed to beat a couple level 50/50 people with Sabrewulf, but that may have just been dumb luck.

Weirdest thing so far was beating a Jago with just a sliver of my life left, and watching the replay of the fight, I lost? It was weird. I watched the replay a second time and the fight played out differently and I still lost, but the Jago had almost a full red health bar that time. It was weird, has anyone else encountered that?

Other than that, great game, when does it switch free characters? I've gotten to level 14 with Sabrewulf but I'd like to try someone else.

Hadooooken
Sep 6, 2004

50/50 level often just means they've grinded the single-player content enough to get all the unlocks, it doesn't mean anything. They can still be trash garbage at the game itself.

The free character changes every 2-3 weeks I think.

People are saying yes but you gotta like, buy the Xblox version on their site since it's cross-buy so getting that will get it for your PC-version too. (That version's also another :10bux: though for reasons unknown because KI 1 and 2 are in there)

Regardless of whether the Goon Hivemind opinion is "KI is bad and you are bad for liking it" or "KI isn't bad shut up", the one consensus is that the music was really good for the first two seasons. So of course the guy who did those tracks is gone and the ones for season 3 are kinda meh. Tusk is okay with all of the Viking stuff, Arbiter's got some Halo influence as you'd expect, but Kim Wu is a whiff and I wasn't impressed by Rash. The problem is that all of the new tracks are electric guitar based whereas the first two seasons had a lot of diversity in theme and execution. I'm hoping as new characters get released we'll get some more variety in the themes but I'm not holding my breath.

It kinda sucks that you cant try characters out before buying them. I'm actually enjoying myself but I'm stuck with the free Saberwulf forever because I dont wanna give the Windows store 50 bucks for the whole package, but I dont wanna single characters unless I know who I'll enjoy.

I'd say the OP does swell explaining most. Really are some oddballs in the roster though. Nothing really quite captures feeling a character out though.

Except Rash. I almost wanna write him off as a joke character.

Still training..
So, accepting that combo breakers have to exist in Killer Instinct, I really like most of the design decisions in this game, but I find one aspect really confusing:

When you want to do the heavy version of a linker in a combo you have to hold down the button while doing the L or M version of the move, since the H version gives you the "ender" version of the move at that point. This seems backwards to me, why not just make H version of specials function as linkers the same way and make it so you hold down any strength button to do the ender version and cash out your combo? If anyone knows a technical reason for this or any other explanation I'd love to hear it cause it seems very un-intuitive to the point that I can't actually understand why they would make that decision. I guess in the end it doesn't really matter cause practice and muscle memory will make it all function the same but it just seems like a significant misstep for something that had an obvious and easier implementation.

the tongue is a really good cross-up tool. i kinda feel it also has some good escape capabilities but i haven't been able to test it out yet.

the wrecking ball has one hit of super armor after start up so its a pretty safe way to get in people's faces overall especially if you follow it up with a jumping medium kick if you fail to him them with the wrecking ball itself. (lot of KI players don't anticipate blocking that)
