With the release of Season 3 of Killer Instinct as well as the PC port, I wanted to go ahead and start fresh with a new thread. After seeing a bit of positive buzz from you guys playing, I wanted to get some resources for a lot of the newer players. What is Killer Instinct? Killer Instinct is a Free to Play fighting game for the Xbox One and Windows 10. Originally helmed by Double Helix, Iron Galaxy took over the second season and have turned the game around. The game is divided into 3 seasons of 9 characters. The game rotates the free character weekly giving players to test out the cast without heavily invested. Characters can be bought in individuals seasons for 20 dollars or peace meal. A complete edition of the game with all 3 current seasons is being sold for 50 dollars. The game is both cross-play and cross-buy. Anything you buy on the Xbox One version carries into the Windows 10 version and vice versa. How Does it Play? Killer Instinct is unique from most fighters due to the way its combo system works. Combo's can be broken with specific button presses allowing a smart player to make a comeback from a particularly vicious attack. A lot of higher level play is based around this. The risk/reward system balances more damaging combos having a better chance to be broken. The longer your chain, the more chances an opponent has to knock you out of it. This is also balanced by the lockout systems. If your opponent makes a bad read they get locked out of another combo breaker for a set amount of time depending on the strength of the button. The general combo system also has a specific flow that looks like this: Opener ->auto double/manual->Linker->Ender There is a fair amount of variation between those, but that is what your general combo flow should look like. Combos are not infinite and each move of the string puts players closer to what is called a blowout. A blow out occurs when the player does too many hits in a combo without cashing out their damage with an ender. Cashing your combo out adds a significant damage boost and leaves your opponent at disadvantage. Letting your opponent blow out puts them at a small advantage and can kill momentum. I'll be giving some links to a better explanation of the systems in the next post. Features Killer Instinct is one of the more robust and fully featured fighting games. Some of the cooler stuff includes: -Fully fleshed out tutorial -Shadow A.I system that lets players play AI versions of themselves -A plethora of training modes and options including full combo breaker training, hitboxes, frame data -Character move lists include frame data for everything -Fairly diverse roster of playstyles and skill sets -Extensive Ranked league with tiers, options for best of 3 and 8 player lobby support Controller Support Killer Instinct right now only supports XB360 fight sticks with XB1 coming at a later date. For the rest of us who have PS3/4/etc sticks, this guide will help you make it possible to use those via XOutput. It's what I personally use and it is similar to what you have to do to make PS4 sticks work for SFV. https://www.reddit.com/r/killerinstinct/comments/4ciyx5/steps_to_getting_xoutput_to_work_with_ki_pc/ SethSeries fucked around with this message at 17:08 on Apr 10, 2016 |

Where do I start with learning the game As stated in the prior post, the actual game tutorial is the best place for a new player. It is incredibly comprehensive and covers every system the game has in depth. It's an excellent resource. Once you feel comfortable with that, we move on to a different source material. The Guide Infil's SF Players Guide to Killer Instinct is by far the best resource for the game. It covers the finer points of the combat system as well as extensive guides for every single character in the game. It features gifs, videos and numerous explanations for anything you want to know about the game. It also is what the character descriptions I'm using come from. The general consensus was that KI was a good game shackled by a bad console. It is a great game that has a lot of tools to help new players. Speaking of, my XBL/Win10 name is ManSeriesSA. Ill be on most nights this week learning Kim Wu. I'll also ve updaing the op throughout the week.

Trykt posted:Played a good set last night where a couple of things finally clicked for me and I had a lot of fun. I was fully in that "just one more" mode, especially after I lost, which this game happily accommodates with its fast load times and a fuckin rematch button. So much less downtime playing this game compared to SFV! If you want, make it a linkable post or post it to a blog site. Ill add it to the op.

OP is updated with controller support. Also for what it's worth, outside of online play, most players don't swag combo each other forever after death. It's not the end of the world.

Alright, I'm going to address both of you and nip this now because I want this game to keep having people who play it. You are allowed to not like parts of a game. I'll be real frank, I wouldn't have responded with,"Someone call Scrubquotes" had the original post not compared Ultra Combos and fatalities to loving AIDs. Had your post been something along the lines of,"Man, I'm enjoying this game but Ultra Combos kinda bug me" we would be having a different conversation. Fun fact, dropping an ultra at the end of the match is a safe way to end a combo the moment someone drops into danger. It cannot be broken, and while it is flashier than an ender, it is a guaranteed kill when used effectively. If you want to learn to play and stay open minded, just about anyone from the FGC will help you. Normally when someone tells you to "get gud", you're acting like a fool. Comparing a mechanic you don't like to AIDs is acting like a fool. As far as BKB goes, I have spent the last 2 years watching people poo poo on KI. I know a lot of people who have done the same, and admittedly the scene gets screwed at tournaments pretty regularly. The poo poo that went down at Final Round isn't the first time it happened. Not once on this forums did I go out there and bitch at people who didn't like my game. Enjoyment is subjective, and I have some issues with this game myself. That doesn't give me right to show up, insult people and act like a fool in various threads. I don't like DoA, Smash, or BlazBlue games, but I don't go out of my way to enter those threads and bitch about that game to people. Come here to talk about learning, playing or just general questions about KI or get the gently caress out.

TJ is the character I learned the game with. He's got some really good tools and a fair amount of options to get in and hurt people. He's got a few bad matchups, but nothing super detrimental to having a good time.

Admittedly this game didnt come into its own until midway through season 2 when Iron Galaxy proceeded to lose their fool rear end minds. Thats when Shadow AI, Breaker Training and a lot of the other tools came in. S1 was pretty rough.
