Seppun Ryohei...sigh.
- Miya Shouko, Imperial Historian (attributed)

Seppun Ryohei...an Imperial scion, who took the unusual step of joining the Seppun family over the Otomo family. Unkind rumors say the Otomo breathed a collective sigh of relief when he did so. (The Empire as a whole breathed a sigh of relief when he removed himself from the succession in favor of his elder twin sister.)

Ryohei is no warrior, it is known. He is in fact ill suited to most roles - too oblivious to be a proper courtier, too weak to be a warrior, no ability to speak with the spirits.

Still, he is an Imperial scion. Imperial scions are Important People, and thus deserving of a retinue. And, in order to get him out of sight of the Imperial Court after an embarrassing incident involving a shiotome, an up and coming young Asako, and a Scorpion samurai-ko who should have known better - the details of which are best left to salacious rumor - Ryohei has been given an Important Mission. He's going to have travel throughout the entire Empire to complete it, though the specific details of the task are vague and don't appear to include any actual diplomatic duties as such, or much beyond an itinerary, in fact. Which, since Ryohei loves secrets, he hasn't deigned to share with his retinue yet.

Which leaves you all standing around awkwardly in a courtyard in Toshi Ranbo, the Imperial Capital, waiting for the Prince to arrive (He is known for being 'fashionably late', though never actually known for being fashionable otherwise) and not actually having anything to do beyond discussing...well, what are you discussing, if anything?

Sayaka Shosuroshowed up earliest. An hour early, in fact. She simply lingered with her thoughts as she stood solitary in the court yard. Bowing slightly, just enough to be inoffensive, to each Samurai as they appeared, her mask hiding her steady analysis of each samurai who gathered.

Toku Hinata

Toku Hinata is not especially early, but he is never late. He arrives without much fanfare - while the Monkey are well off for a minor clan, they are still a minor clan - and much good cheer. He is polite and friendly to everyone - very friendly, really. He smiles a lot, makes (terrible) jokes and carries himself with an ease that suggests he hasn't a care in the world.

"Have you heard anything about where we're going first? I've heard we're going all over the empire - it sounds like it's going to be amazing!"

He may not have actually heard what Ryohei is like.

The Scorpion speaks up, her way of speaking making it difficult to ascertain the tone of her sentence.

"Seppun-sama has decided to keep the details to this journey to himself. It is no doubt planned meticulously. A great burden for one to bear, though I expect no less from one of such high station."

Her voice is deadpan, no sign of seriousness or comedy can be detected purely from her tone.

Kuni Kaede

Standing. And waiting. There is so much waiting in the north. She has had to tackle the task as someone not born to it. You have to find an expression to fix on your face while waiting that seems respectable, aloof, patient but not ridiculous – it was easy to go too hard on the waiting expression and seem like you’d suffered a grievous wound, she found. She counted herself lucky – the face paint did most of the work for her.

At least, the scenery was nice – it is as some sage once said, ‘the grass is always greener on the other side.’ That sage probably grew up in the Kuni Wastes, Kaede decides. Everywhere else is greener, she’d even seen fudoshi in the Shadowlands – that was sometimes green. There’s others about, honored to join the retinue of a Seppun, maybe. The priestess feigns disinterest in the others, hands folded in her dull red robes, pretending to be counting the blossoms on one of the cherry trees dotting the courtyard, something she’d read they do here. She’s not actually counting though. In truth, she’s trying to figure out what clan the loud one is from, silently cursing Kuni Taka for not stressing heraldry enough.

I don’t have a picture, I like this face paint though.

Fascination (Fashion & Clothing) (-1): You are completely fascinated by some subject, and will go to great lengths to learn more about it or to experience it in new ways. Typical subjects of a samurai’s fascination include music, horses, poetry, and history. This fascination badly impedes your judgment, and you will take even dishonorable actions to learn more, which could end in absolute disgrace if your actions are discovered.
Kaede has developed an unfortunate fondness that goes against every part of her upbringing, and every fiber of her being. But the clothing really is very pretty…

Daikoku’s Curse (-3): The Fortune of Wealth finds you unpleasant, and as a result all your mercantile interests come to very little. You suffer a penalty of -1k1 to all Commerce rolls, and the koku of your School’s starting outfit is reduced by 1.
Kuni Taka’s training maybe didn’t stress fiscal matters, or maybe she really is cursed. Either way, Kaede just has a poor grasp of money, where it comes from and how to hold on to it.

I wanna be a saikyo HERO!
Doji Momoirobara | 童子桃色薔薇

Nikesake is, by the standards of Rokugan, not far from Toshi Ranbo. Just across the Enjaku province, really. Doji Momoirobara and Miya Aya even get a Shiba escort for most of the trip; honestly not as dramatic as it seems, as the Shiba patrol the roads rather conspicuously to begin with, and so keeping an Imperial messenger company both looks good and hardly takes any effort. One day later, they're at Mamoru Kyotei Toshi. Morning prayers at the Temple of the Fourteen Hands, nearly a millennium old, as Momo prays-

"Fortunes, let this journey be simple and safe and swift."

- and only another day to arrive at Toshi Ranbo. Considering the briefness of their trip, it's only the wrangling required in bringing Momo around that makes her late. As she gets off the horse, Momo muses you can't talk about in Rokugan: like how much your butt hurts after two days in the saddle. Sad, really, but Momo's never had a whole day on a pony previously. Looking over to the Miya, she briefly considers some sort of escape. Sadly, Essence of Air was never a part of her lessons. Instead, she casts off the dust of the road and misplaced locks of hair with Benten's Touch. Not for Ryohei's sake, mind you, but she may as well look her best when meeting companions for the first time. Taking her gift off her horse, it's all she can do not to weep as she walks through Senzai and its artistic scene, not allowed to dally. Gardens! Shadow plays! Kabuki! But no, no. She has to see Ryohei. Ugh.

Aya, wisely and under strict instruction, never takes her eyes off of Momoirobara and keeps her en route, remembering her meeting with Dojo Hyakunichisou only two days ago. "I am told my daughter is one of the finest shugenja of her generation." the diplomat said frankly. "She is graceful and she is studious and she is everything her father could want. But I will warn you: she can get lost in a teahouse."

When the Crane arrives under her parasol, she well, is slightly unreal in how clean and vibrant and airy she is for somebody arriving immediately from a journey. Almost might seem more the courtier, were it not for the scrollcase. A bow to the Miya courier, and she is finally let allowed to roam free... or as free as one can be around Seppun Guardsmen, who are seemingly taught to never blink while under observation. Walking up the group, she bows modestly before rising. "I understand you are all awaiting Ryohei-sama? I am Dojo Momoirobara." She smiles with a simple sincerity - the courtly equivalent of a swordsman withstanding a freezing waterfall, given her fate. "I am here to accompany him on his journey." she continues with a tone of gentle cheer, almost managing to make it sound like a good thing.

Toku Hinata

Hinata beams. He definitely has no idea what's going on with Ryohei.

"I'm Toku Hinata! And with so much beauty joining us on this trip, I can't imagine the journey will be unpleasant!"

He crosses his arms, grinning and posing in a way that he thinks makes him look heroic. (He is not actually entirely wrong in this belief.)

"I have been chosen to help defend Seppun Ryohei-sama, as well as those of his entourage who cannot defend themselves. Perhaps I'll have a chance to show you the power and grace of the Monkey's Sword."

This is clearly going to be an amazing journey. Everyone's not arrived yet, sure, but so far - a lovely, sparkly Crane girl, a silent and intriguing Crab and a mysterious (and surely beautiful) Scorpion. How could this get better?

Himura Oboro doesn't arrive under a parasol, and she looks exactly like you'd expect someone who just traveled all the way from the Wall on short notice would look. She at least took the time to shake the road dust off her armor and put on a clean kimono. But there's no mistaking her for anything but a Crab bushi fresh from the far South.

Scanning the courtyard for a second like she expects a goblin to jump out from behind a cherry tree, Oboro looks over her companions, then gives them a rigid bow. Particularly to the Kuni. "Himura Oboro," she states bluntly by way of greeting.

"This is where Seppun Ryohei-sama's retinue is meeting, right?" She asks, walking over to join the group. "Has anyone provided us with instructions?" Oboro can't quite keep a slight burr of exasperation over just how shambolic this place is. Doesn't anyone up here know how to organize a fortress city properly? The wear from the road isn't help any with that, to be sure.

Again a neutral tone surrounded her words.

The tall girl crosses her arms and gives a firm nod to the Himura, glad for the familiar colors. "Kuni Kaede." Turning to watch the others, "I did not know there would be more of us." No need to clarify what she means, "But the things I was not told about this venture could fill scrolls. This is where we are to be, though." She seems to shrug her shoulders without obviously doing so, then looks back up to the cherry tree, "We are a long way from home - things are different here. So that means we wait."

Oboro hasn't really met a Scorpion before, so she's not exactly sure how to take that. So she just settles for saying, "Oh. I see."

She seems a lot more comfortable when Kaede comes over to join them. "I've noticed. Things have a different pace up here, for sure." Oboro looks around again, then finds a spot out of the direct sun to stand in, clearly settling in to wait. It seems like something she's good at. After a slightly too long pause, Oboro remembers she should try to actually talk to her new comrades. "So. Should we... do something to pass the time?"

Then she remembers to introduce herself, in the same manner as before.

"This must be all of us, then." Naturally she counts only samurai in that equation. "We're just... waiting. And talking about finding a way to pass the time." She takes a stab in that direction herself, to start a conversation. "Does anyone else know Seppun Ryohei-sama personally?" Normally talking about an Imperial Prince that way would be a boast.

It is gigantic, and flared, and poorly balanced--thus the two harried-looking servants, one to either side, with poles to help keep it balanced, evidently much to Ryohei's irritation. He stops and regards you all, his eyes seeking out Momoirobara in particular.

And then, thankfully, training kicks in. Every Toku bushi learns how to deal with Imperials, by tradition.

The color drains from her face, not that anyone can tell. Is this it, then? Is this this man’s true nature? A Seppun of the Empire. Fortunes, what if they’re all like this? What if the Emperor himself is merely the greatest buffoon of them all and it is the Celestial Order that protects his line? Or…

Could it be a ruse… Could this bumbling exterior hide a serene soul within? It could be a test. Or even worse, could this be the fashion they hold popul- no, the looks on the other’s faces seem to suggest it is not so. The priestess takes refuge as her master suggested - by bowing deeply while thinking of a response. Her voice is cold and the words come out slowly, as this form of obeisance isn't something she's practiced in, “As... Toku-san says. It evokes… Tani Hitokage in the Autumn.” Those were not the words she hoped for. The Autumn festival of the Toritaka featured terrifying, large unwieldy costumes meant to ward against ghosts and spirits. It is honest, at the least, but maybe more honest than she'd meant to be. Outwardly, she is calm, stone-faced, hidden behind her paint, her panic held secret. Just, be aloof. You are a Kuni witch. Cryptic are your ways. That's it.

On the way down, Hinata ends up being as friendly as he was to start. He is kind, cheerful and solicitous of people's needs - well, mostly. He specifically is quick to help the ladies of the team, and often shows off while doing so in some attempt to impress them. Aside from her interactions with others, she decided to ask others if they would be willing to spar together during the night while Ryohei rests in order to learn each of her new companion's skills. This way she knows how to best depend upon them in the future.

If someone wants to refuse just say Sayaka's offer just say so. That'll be something to talk about later maybe!

Kuni Kaede

The Kuni’s good will, fueled by curiosity at her new surroundings, quickly evaporates once they embark. She spends most of the day riding quietly, shoulders slumped, in her dull red robes, dodging antics and drolly answering questions tossed her way, typically only summoning great courtesy for their charge, Ryohei, and she is willing to open up to at least engage in conversation with Momoirobara or Oboro. Her evenings are mostly spent in quiet study of texts brought from the Wastes, with a healthy dose of reflection and prayer. She does her best not to be drawn in by this duty’s softness, as her teacher had warned her.

The strongest! The smartest!
The rightest!
Kakita Keiichi

While Keiichi has a natural charn, he is also painfully naive, and both become rather apparent over the course of the trip. He's congenial and friendly in a way that feels natural, easy to laugh and smile, and hard to hate, but it becomes increasingly obvious that he has no idea what they're in for regarding Ryoko Owari. Of course, he's more then happy to spar with Sayaka, and indeed seems to take the sparing thing pretty seriously. He's also really serious about writing; not a day goes by where he isn't writing something down in a small pillow book, and the only thing he's more eager about then writing letters to his family is telling everyone else about them.

Unfortunately, he is particularly stubborn about trying to get the two Crab out of their shells, socially-speaking.

I wanna be a saikyo HERO!
Doji Momoirobara | 童子桃色薔薇

Momoirobara vacillates between a polite charm and moments of private melancholy. In towns, at least, she's curious, attentive, and friendly, always eager to see the local sights and hear the local stories. However, he road seems to wear on her more. Homesickness, maybe, but the cheerful mask only vanishes for brief moments. As far as magic goes, she's fairly unassuming; you may see her speak to the wind to get a notion of the weather ahead, but that's the most that comes up, though she seems to cast another spell to clean herself up before arriving at stops. The more practical-minded might wonder what her duty might be, or, in fact, if she has a duty at all. But shugenja do keep tricks up their sleeves...

She seems well-versed on current arts and fashions, courtly rumors and tales, but the fact that her sword is peace-bonded speaks to her bearing it as a clarification of her class and little else. She'll be eager to ask Keiichi about the local goings-on in Crane lands, while she seems politely amused by his attempts to impress, at least. She'll try and engage Kaede regarding philosophy and the latest theory; in that sense, she might actually seem more like a Phoenix than a Crane, though the fact she grew up in a Phoenix city will definitely explain that. Sayaka is left to her privacy; she doesn't know what to make of Scorpions and their masks, seeming to take it at face value... or lack of a face, as the case may be. Oboro? Oboro is a guard, and can be trusted to handle matters practical, but Momo doesn't seem to have much familiarity with such things.

Also, she gets lost troublingly often. It'd almost be like she's trying to escape were it not for her confusion and seeming innocence. But it's clear once she's out of the sight of familiar landmarks, her ability to lost and wander away seems to border on a fortunes' curse, and there's probably a few adventures finding her stumbling through some woods or staring blank-eyed in the middle of a market. Probably best not to let her wander off on her own.

My paper soldiers form a wall, five paces thick and twice as tall.
Himura Oboro

The Princes' enthusiastic declaration of immediate departure was the first thing Oboro had approved of all day. That those plans were immediately thwarted fit entirely with everything else she'd experienced since Hida Ioroi had given her this assignment.

Once they're on the road, she's willing - even eager - accept Sayaka's suggestion. Training is a little bit of normalcy that clearly relaxes her in this very weird situation. Oboro is also willing to help the other bushi practice kyujutsu and explain the finer points of reconnaissance and how to traverse difficult terrain. She's even willing to pester Keiichi about dueling tips, since most of her experience and training focused on skirmishing.

The Crane might come to regret trying to get her "out of her shell." On the other hand, Oboro tries to assist with the project as far as Kaede is concerned. The Himura makes a point of taking tea with the Kuni and talking things over. She styles it as a daily report. It's hard to tell if it's to try and make Kaede more welcome, or for Oboro to keep herself sane.

As for Hinata, Oboro is entirely unimpressed by his attempts to impress her with feats of strength. On the other hand, if she can use that impulse to hand off boring work to him and leave to do something else, she'll take advantage of it until the Monkey figures it out.

After the third time Momoirobara gets hopelessly lost, and having to literally climb over a small mountain to retrieve the Doji, Oboro appoints herself the shugenja's personal guide. In fact, most evenings when they stop Oboro takes to exploring the area and making note of all the potential Crane-ensnaring pitfalls. Part way through the journey she starts looking for Seppun-ensnaring ones as well.

Oboro isn't so much stiff around Ryohei as she is eternally perplexed. Crab tenacity keeps her coming back, so she routinely gets trapped in hour long "conversations" with the Prince, to which her contributions consist almost entirely of "Yes, Seppun-sama" or "I don't know, Seppun-sama" or simple blank looks.

Whenever they stop in a village, Oboro immediately makes a nuisance of herself by trying to talk anyone and everyone into playing go.

Trout Clan Daimyo
Your journey from Toshi Ranbo to Ryoko Owari Toshi goes quite smoothly, all things considered. Ryohei's route appears to have been communicated ahead of time so checks at guard stations along the road to make sure papers are in order go quite smoothly overall. Suspicions that his route has been communicated to someone, at least, if not to you, are confirmed when upon your arrival at the city gates you are met by a small delegation of Unicorn guards prepared to bring you to the home of the city's governor, Ide Han.

As the governor's estate was originally built by the Scorpion the architecture shows none of the Unicorn flair seen elsewhere in their holdings in Ryoko Owari, but the decor is decidedly exotic to non-Unicorn eyes. Ryohei starts to look a little nervous as you approach the building, and quietly leans over and confides, "Oh goodness, I completely forgot about bringing a gift for Ide-san!"

Shosuro Sayaka

"Seppun-sama, this journey has been quite taxing. I believe all of us had allowed your wise suggestion for each of us to help create a poem for Ide-sama to slip our minds. I just now remembered you saying this at the beginning of our journey, in fact." It was obvious Seppun Ryohei never said such a thing, but it's certainly believable enough. "I believe we have enough time to draw on the artistry and culture of our clans, and find a truly stirring poem."

It wasn't obvious to anyone else, but Keiichi could feel Sayaka's eyes burrowing into him through her mask. It was obvious to her from their interactions these past days that Keiichi can have quite a way with arts, even for a Crane. When he wants to, anyway.

Toku Hinata

Hinata blinks. Oh crap, did he actually forget that? That's - oh dear. That is a failure he will be ashamed of for some time now, at least until someone tells him that Sayaka was making things up to save face for Ryohei and he didn't actually forget an Imperial command entirely.

He scrambles.

"Oh...oh ,right, that was...that was..." He pauses, his face falling. Bushido calls for sincerity, so he is honest. "...I completely forgot about that. I...will do my best!"

Hinata closes his eyes, wracking his brains for the proper structure of the haiku. She said it was to show off clan culture, right? But how...

"...ah...Sun sets over green walls/Too high for any to climb/Except for monkeys."

Technically, it satisfies all haiku rules (or so Hinata hopes). Hinata coughs, his ears reddening. Even he seems to grasp that is not actually a good poem.

Sayaka looks over to Hinata for a second, reminded of love lost. She didn't feel the need to provide a poem before with two Cranes in tow, but an idea struck her.

"Blossoms in Winter/Beauty and love, Trapped in Cold/ Forever Apart"
