The gen test at the beginning gave a high probability of developing a heart condition, but it was not a guarantee. It turned out that his heart was fine after all. Yeah he lucked out, but no one was willing to take that risk beforehand.

Like, did you even watch the movie OP guy? I would shame myself into the ground right now, if I were you.

it took me maybe five attempts to watch gattaca all the way through on dvd as it was my ex's favourite film and we would inevitably end up having sex or doing a blowjob at some point near where vincent beats his brother in swim chicken. I never really found out how it ended until maybe two years ago when i finally watched it with someone else. still can't remember much about it because I think we were high but i agree op, it was irresponsible of him to endanger others like that for personal gain

Maybe the chance of him actually dying is pretty low and those dystopia eugenics guys are being just a taaad too anal about the whole thing.

Also maybe endangering other people is OK with him in his personal moral code, and what is science gonna do? say that's wrong? ya lmao I think not

Vincent Freeman was diagnosed with a congenital heart condition that could kill him at any time after the age of thirty, as well as nearsightedness. He hides these handicaps from his employers at the space program (by assuming the identity of someone with a more suitable genetic profile) and through hard work and determination, earns a spot on the Mars mission. Hooray! Triumph of the human spirit over cold genetic calculation, right?

Wrong.

Vincent Freeman is endangering the lives of his fellow astronauts and the viability of the Mars mission. What happens when he has a heart attack halfway between Earth and Mars, huh? What happens when he runs out of saline solution for his contact lenses after six months? Because there's no way he brought an eight year supply.

What happens when one of his contacts gets dislodged during a spacewalk and he can't fix it because of his space suit, and his hand eye coordination is severely impaired?

And even if nothing bad happens, are we to assume also that none of his fellow astronauts are going to notice he's putting in contact lenses every day? How can they trust him once they discover he's not who he said he was?

I'm not denying that what Vincent did was a major accomplishment, nor that he overcame seemingly impossible odds to accomplish his dream, but he was so focused on whether he could do it, he never stopped to ask himself whether he should.

It's pretty retarded, there is no way he will not be discovered in space anyway, and then he will be remembered as a criminal. Additionally, there was never any proof there wasn't a heart condition, we just didn't see it yet. He may well have developed something after launch

Imagine the damage he would do to the social standing of in-valids if he had a heart attack in space and it came out he cheated the system. He's not just screwing over his fellow astronauts, but every non-designer baby on Earth.

You could almost end up with civil war or an illegality behind non-designer children. Then what happens when the 'accidents' come along? They are removed from the home, the family never to see them again, because if they are let live in the general community then you will get this poo poo happening. And it all starts because of one loving guy.

They wouldn't, BUT he literally fucks it up for any other invalid that might want to camouflage themselves into an -important businessman- role, or to become a doctor, scientist, anything. Because imagine how security gets increased when they realise that a guy got into loving space with bodged DNA. He could have literally ANY dream that does not involve him revealing himself and loving over everyone else.

I watched this movie as part of a English class during my undergrad and my professor couldn't figure out why Jude Law's character gave Ethan Hawke a lock of hair to bring up into space and I sort of looked at her and wondered what credentials she had faked to get into her position

I explained what I thought it meant (Jude Law's character was going to be an A+ #1 Astronaut but then broke his back irrc?) and that was his way of "making it", and after class a bunch of people told me they hadn't understood it either and thanked me, it was all sort of bewildering
