CBJ somehow finish the season on a three game win streak. I say "somehow" because even though Toronto and Buffalo shouldn't be surprises, they capped it off by beating Chicago 5-4 in OT in a game they had no business winning after being down 3-0 in the first period.

Torts finishes his first season 34-33-8.

I just want to point out that you're a Leafs fan, and you have decades of high expectations turning into cavernous disappointments.
Maybe take 50% off it. That way when Montreal or Edmonton gets the golden ticket, you won't feel so bad.

My biggest hope for the draft lottery is that neither Montreal or Boston win it. I resigned myself to the Leafs picking ~4th a while ago.

Literally any of Matthews, Laine, the other Finn or Marner's linemate Tkachuk are cool and good. Nylander, Chychrun and Juolevi also seem cool and good. Drafts owns, bring on the new uniforms, make a line of Laine - Nylander - Marner next year. Go leaf.

The Jackets, the Jets, the Sabres, the Coyotes... the NHL is not exactly short of teams that deserve better than they get.

Injuries (Bobrovsky, Dubinksy, Jenner, etc.), RyJo regressed, and a lot of vets (JMFJ, Clarkson, Foligno, Prout, etc.) were pretty terrible, or even more terrible than expected.

I have hope for Jones, Murray, Werenski and even Kukan. Korpisalo was a pleasant surprise as well.

Brooks Laich says he's "pretty sure" he'll be back with the Leafs next year, after getting positive feedback from management. Presumably he's around to provide Leadership and be a Veteran Influence but he's also completely useless so I don't feel great about this news. I mean the alternative is Buy Him Out which doesn't really matter next year anyway. Team's not quite there and we don't have any big signings he's getting in the way of unless we sign Stamkos/Kadri/Rielly to monster albatross contracts.

He's got a cap hit of 4.5 million next year. The best way to use him is probably to have him to start the year and then trade him while retaining 50% if rookies force him out of the lineup.

Not expecting too much out of the Flames this off-season. Once the Gaudreau and Monahan extensions are done, there won't be much cap space left to make moves, beyond some bargain-bin stuff.

He was so bad most nights I honestly started getting over my aversion to buyouts. Considering the market and cap crunch of this year and next I don't think he's tradeable no matter how much salary the Leafs retain.

The roster spot he takes up is definitely the bigger issue. I suppose they can always just perma-bench him or send him down if need be.

As an Oilers fan I kind of hope they DON'T get the #1 pick. It would take some of the oxygen out of the 'Edmonton ruins #1s' argument, and a gigantic Finnish winger would fill a spot somewhat better than another centre.

Twin Cinema posted:

They did it to further reduce the incentive for tanking. Joke's on the NHL, though: Edmonton has been trying to win all this time.

There really shouldn't be any other way. I bet if the NHL still owned the Coyotes, they'd either rig the lottery or orchestrate a huge trade to get him on Arizona.
