Yeah, the Leafs don't have as much cap space as I thought they did. Tim Gleason is still on the books for the next 2 years. gently caress.

I have faith that the Leafs will still find a way to gently caress it all up in the end and another 50 years will go by without them doing anything noteworthy.

Yeah there's plenty of time for this team to gently caress it all up again. Still, it's nice to have legit positives coming out of a losing year for once.

The Leafs should just violate the salary cap then dare the NHL to make them forfeit games.

Yeah, Rielly's contract is a good deal, provided he continues to progress as well as expected, but I wouldn't call it the best deal in the league. For example, Josi is signed to a much better deal, even if, I think, he was giving up less free agent years (so, essentially, it's not fair to compare the two).

The big thing about Kadri's deal is that he's giving up 4 free agent years. It's not really fair to compare Tavares, Benn, or Seguin to him. I still don't think it's the best deal in the league or anything.

I feel like Bozak isn't as bad as some people make him out to be. I think he gets a lot of bad will because of the time he played 1c and he isn't good enough for that but he's a decent 3c, which is where he'll probably slot next year anyway. I don't remember what his contract is like, so that may be why people are hard on him but for what I see he's ok.

Happy with the Rielly/Kadri contracts. Not a fan of Lou's weird rules for players but am a fan of his gm-ing otherwise.

I'm a bit surprised at Rielly getting 5 to be honest, especially with Maatta's deal as a pretty good comparable. Kadri is a steal compared to guys like Sutter and Kesler, especially.
Both are a bit lower than you'd expect for guys signing up for a tire-fire level rebuild, so it all in all not bad signings.

The selling points would be:

1) We've got Babs, and he's gonna be the coach of the Canadian Mens Hockey team for at least one more olympics, probably two. Not a bad guy to know on a nickname basis.
2) If you sign short term, you're going to be playing with a tire fire. If you sign long term, you are in with a shot of playing on a cup contender or at the very least a team competent enough to drive your FA value through the roof.
3) If you leave, we're going to get angry leafs fans to burn down your parents homes.

Bozak's fine for his role. He's also 30 and paid more than your average third-line/sheltered centre probably should be. Fact is that the Leafs still need cap and contract flexibility in the short term, and he's one of the more conceivable moving parts.

Nobody's saying Bozak had a bad year, he had a pretty good one. He's too old to be part of the team's plans though, so if he has value on the market it would be a waste not to move him.

I think they just paid off the last year of the salary retained from the Gunnarsson/Polak swap (lol). I know they're using one spot on Kessel (also lol) but I can't remember if there's another one.

Tyler Bozak with JVR (5v5):

221 minutes; 3.25 GF/60; 1.62 GA/60; 67.6 CF/60; 53.5 CA/60

Tyler Bozak without JVR (5v5):

543 minutes; 1.66 GF/60; 2.98 GA/60; 61.4 CF/60; 62.2 CA/60

Or, in other words, he still wasn't good but that was kinda masked by JVR having an absolute monster year before going down to injury. I think that the Leafs probably try to move him in the offseason not because he's intolerably bad, but because it shouldn't be very hard to replace what he does with a player at the quarter of the cost. If they don't move him it's not the end of the world.

COACH TOTORO SAY REFEREE CAN BANISH WHISTLE TO LAND OF WIND AND GHOSTS!
I remember listening to a Brian Burke interview on TSN and he was talking about his time as GM of the Canucks while Crawford was coaching. Apparently a player (he never mentioned which one) came and complained to him that Crawford kicked him on the bench. Not a light tap either, it was a good full on kick. Burke's response was "if I was there you would've been kicked twice".

If Mario Tremblay pulls Roy at a reasonable time he never gets traded and Crawford never gets a Cup or another head coaching gig. It's 20 years later and he's still living off that.
