BASEBALL IS STILL BACK

From this weekend's action: rookie Trevor Story hits his record 7th home run in his first 6 six games

SCHEDULE

Today in Baseball History courtesy baseball-reference.com
1966 - Emmett Ashford becomes the first black umpire in major league history.
2008 - For the third time in the past six years, Major League Baseball adopts a stricter steroids policy. Increased testing is instituted and more power is given to outside administrators. Players named in the Mitchell Report are given amnesty and suspensions for Jose Guillen and Jay Gibbons are eliminated.
2013 - A bench-clearing brawl in the Dodgers' 3 - 2 win over the Padres proves costly, as prize free agent signee Zack Greinke breaks his left collarbone in the melee. Greinke plunks Carlos Quentin on the left shoulder with a 6th-inning pitch and the slugger charges the mound and tackles the pitcher to the ground; they end up at the bottom of a huge pile of players from both dugouts. Greinke's left shoulder took the brunt of the impact as Quentin first ran into him.

Born on This Day :toot:
1964 - Bret Saberhagen
1972 - Jason Varitek
1974 - Trot Nixon
1980 - Mark Teixeira
1984 - Alejandro De Aza
1986 - Charlie Furbush
1988 - Peter Kozma
1988 - Kenta Maeda

[Bryce Harper] doesn't compare to me yet. He has a long way to go to me. He is not even close to me. But he is one hell of a ballplayer. I watch him, I admire and I look at him and I'm in awe. You don't see it that often. For my eyes to get real big and go, 'Wow,' you have to be something special. It's longevity that [I have to be] over-wowed about. Short-term don't do much for me. Longevity is where it's going to be. When I see these guys - seven, eight, 10, 12 years down the road still doing what they are doing, then you will hear the real 'wow.' Right now, I'm impressed.

Anyone know why Verlander is pitching today instead of Shane Greene?

He was supposed to start yesterday against the Yankees but got rained out.

Verlander has a career record of 25-3 in interleague games :eyepop:

He shouldn't have broken that guy's bat, knowing he would hit it to the place where no defender was. Rookie mistake

Yeah I was gonna say, whoever asked which pitcher was going to melt down the answer is Gallardo. Only given up 3 runs with one out so far!

Actually I've never really paid attention to it, has Gallardo always been that kind of a slow-ball pitcher? I don't think he's topped 84 outside of a tiny handful of fastballs.

I'm not sure why you'd send Verlander back out for another inning with this pitch count, based on what he's done so far in the game.
