Also I would not have picked Rupert Sanders to direct, but rather someone like Ben Affleck (The Town) The Cohen Brothers (True Grit) Kurt Wimmer (Ultraviolet) Martin Campbell (Goldeneye, Casino Royale). Ideally I'd have Paul Verhoven direct but he doesn't seem to do US films any more. I'd also be interested to see what Tarantino would do with a big budget Sci Fi, even though they are not his usual milieu. E: or Dredd's Pete Travis. It has a few action scenes that are totally loving amazing, better than any other action scenes you've ever seen, but they're really short. They're over as soon as they began practically. SAC is a much better adaptation by far, imo.

I picked the directors I did because (except for the Ultraviolet guy) they directed relatively tight, solid action films with a focus on characterization (also I can't believe I left John McTiernan, the director of Die Hard off my list). It is my belief that in order for Ghost in the shell to be good, it should be presented as a visceral, scenario driven gritty action shoot 'em up, rather than some epic fantasy. Worldbuilding elements should be minimal and confined to what's relevant to the plot, with the larger world and society hinted at at most.

Young Freud posted:I've been speaking up Neil Blomkamp in most discussions, mostly because he has a background as a VFX grunt and knows how to pull it off without breaking the bank. All three of his films are just slightly over the budget of Rupert Sanders' Snow White, with Elysium being the only film he's done that's gone over $100 million. Blomkamp is really great and Elysium was one of my favorite movies, he'd definitely be a great choice.
