i went to the longxi rice terraces in guangxi in 2011 but that's my only experience in actual farms or rice fields in china, unfortunately, so i can't contribute too much. if i see any farmers in the city, though, i'll pass my stories along

I don't think the China thread was racist but I'm no mod.. It was mostly just pointing out how dumb it was to pretend they were a super power or about to take over the world, when most of the school system and government are more about memorization, cheating, and corruption than about innovation, learning, and corruption. I can't imagine an Apple of a Google appearing in China in the foreseeable future. I can imagine a high speed rail being copied from another country with inferior quality control and sub-par materials so that the manufacturer can skim some money off the top and then get irate if anyone calls them on it? It's like when we ship engineering jobs to Bangalore. They do it okay for a bit, then stop trying or caring and just see how long we will continue to pay them before they are let go at which point some other foreign idiot will hire them due to their amazing resume.

What's great is that a tooon of the posters in these thread post about their experiences of having Chinese relatives, partners and friends living in Chinese cities, and becoming proficient and comfortable enough to use local speech and slang to call people farmers. Unfortunately, China is a closed society and there are extremely few naturalised Chinese foreigners. These nuances are lost, naturally, to the Morality Brigade who swoop down and declare anything that may suggest there is humor in these relationships and experiences as racism.

chinese tea is actually really cool. if anyone is curious i would recommend tyring some "tie guan yin", it has a very aromatic quality and smells like fresh flowers. it's not what westerners think of tea where you chug like a loving 20 oz. cup of it, you take a small mount in and the scent really hits you, and it's most enjoyable on a nice spring day when you first feel the warmth of the sun on a roof stop, for instance
