I had basically nothing, then function returned but not complete function. Vacuum system is probably full of brake fluid from my previously chronically leaking clutch master/booster situation, but following the steps in my workshop manual the booster appears to be functioning fine, so I can cross that off. When it stops raining I'll get someone to help me bleed it all and see if that helps E: Vacuum pump is pulling some vacuum, as diagnosed by pulling a vac hose and putting my thumb over the end. Doesn't feel super strong but I have no frame of reference. gimpsuitjones fucked around with this message at 05:02 on May 29, 2016 |

That would do it. Living in the land of fog it probably wouldnt hurt to bleed the brakes anyway if they havent been done for a year or so.

Yeah, I want to flush the brakes at some point in the near future. The problem was vacuum leaking through the busted clutch booster, simply pulled the hose feeding it vacuum and capped the reservoir and the brakes are as good as they've ever been (not amazing).

gimpsuitjones posted:Glow plugs were replaced not long before I got it, I think it was the very low idle, since it's firing up nicely now? Might replace the plugs anyway I guess since it's cheap enough to do. If you haven't already fixed the problem, check the glowplug wires as well. I've had them break inside the insulation before. I don't know what kind of control unit Toyota uses, but the Ford (well, Navistar) ones don't go bad so much as they explode.

The control unit varies, from nothing at all, or a little bit of resistive wire that gets red hot, or then there's superglow which uses 6v plugs, etc. That's why I linked that thread on mud. gimp, if it wasn't for the fact you said adjusting the idle helped significantly, I almost want to tell you to pull the head and take a look at the prechambers. Assuming the plugs are the correct ones for your 3B's setup, I'd almost be inclined to think there's a crack in one of your prechambers (it happens), that seals up once the engine's to temp. Crushers (prolific cruiser mechanic) once showed me a 3B head with all four cracked so badly they were threatening to drop chunks into the cylinders.

It's entirely possible that the precups are cracked since that seems like A Thing with the 3B She fires up ok now though https://youtu.be/rxzJCQ9pBj8 gimpsuitjones fucked around with this message at 01:28 on Jun 4, 2016 |

Everyone should get a Landcruiser! Did 650k's today, no issues, hammered it in the twisty bits and up the hills (there are a lot of both on SH6) and still got 11.8L/100km. Passed 2 other MWB 70 series inside 30 mins which was odd, they're not super common, chopped one going up the Crown Range WOT in third, passed one going the other way. Also saw a rad first gen Surf and a modified Hilux on 37s and like 20 80 series Wagons and an insanely sick XY GT Falcon, none of which I got photos of

It's supposed to be more fun to go fast in a slow car than slow in a fast one. And the cruiser is insanely slow and bouncy and rattly and sloppy and extremely fun when you're flooring it up a twisty hill in third and it feels like you're doing a million miles per hour but really you're just abusing your poor little Diesel engine

Spent the morning mucking around doing little bits and pieces. Moved my license plate bracket Had ordered new hood bumpers which had arrived so I replaced them. Old and busted Doesn't line up properly New and shiny Adjusted these also Lines up nicely. New bumpers didn't actually do poo poo to help it line up but oh well they cost $16 for 4 Fixed the outer door weatherstripping on my passenger door and put in the new window seals. Old and busted New and actually sealing Removed the vac reservoir for the clutch booster. So much more room! Fixed my drivers door lock/diesel cap cylinders, this was easy Put bash plates back on underneath also, drilled out a broken bolt and tapped the hole to 10x1.5. Ran an m8 tap through all the other bolt holes and ran the bolts through a die nut. Then discovered my injector pump is leaking http://youtu.be/bZExeg0_N_M Other parts are valve cover gasket for when I do my valve clearances, shifter seat bushing and seal, and gasket and cover and bolts for PTO output on the xfer case, but I might keep the PTO winch now, having priced up Warn electric winches

# ? Jun 5, 2016 02:39 |
|
Also mocked up some extensions to the sides of the winch housing with cardboard to get an idea for how I can make a bumper, now I need to decide whether to get someone else to make them or buy a welder etc and do it myself. Bolt on "wings" made of a few bits of plate welded up should work fine, something like so

Yes hmmm just chiming in to say that while I love the thread, locks last a poo poo-ton longer if they're cleaned with a spray solvent, then lubricated with graphite. WD-40 is amazing but tends to form goop with the brass shavings in the lock that just wears it down more quickly. However with standard Toyota construction "more quickly" can be "wears out in 10 years instead of 20" so really it's no gigantic loss. Carry on.

Thanks, I had the pressing issue of "can't unlock things" at the time & need to get new lock cylinders all around anyhow cos my keys tend to fly out the ignition when I go around left turns

Makes total sense. WD40 does free things up.

Ah. Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel strikes again. Makes old injector pumps leak. A diesel injector specialist should be able to just replace the shaft seals, but eventually all of the rubber seals on the pump will start to leak, and unfortunately most of the time when you crack open an old pump they're so worn out that its not worth the effort to just re-seal it without a pump rebuild too. Which of course isnt cheap.

Oddly enough the IP leak seems to have packed up and gone home for the moment which is nice. Did discover a slight p/s leak and coolant leak though, both resolved with tightening some clamps

Took it in for the 6-monthly WOF check today, failed on "can't close the hood" and a park light out. Changed the one park light globe, then the other as it was basically stuffed too. Durr Yay! Legal! Who the heck uses park lights anyway. Then showed the guy that you can close the hood if you give it a good slam and I'm away and legal again(apart from 2300km in deficit on diesel miles, ugh) for the next 6 months. Good thing my injector pump picked today to not leak May not be doing much on the Cruiser for a while, focussing on trying to buy a house (with 2 garages!!)

I don't have anything to add other than to say that I wish your car was my car and I've been reading this thread with a semi. Wish we had diesel Cruisers here. *sigh* I want a LC but fuel efficiency is poo poo here on the gasser LCs (13-15 on the 1FZ) and I drive a lot. Guess I'm sticking with the 4Runner for awhile...

I'm averaging about 11.6L/100km highway with this beast! And I found a place (80km out of town, but on the highway that I have to drive to go anywhere I want to go mostly) that sells diesel for $.99/L! Everywhere in town it's $1.24 a litre. Next to a new V8 70 series ute in the shed at work

I have one less accessory belt now. gently caress you, non-functional air-con and failure-prone idler pulley bearing. Now to sit back and enjoy my fuel economy savings and extra power with all that parasitic drag gone.

Hey, why don't I pull my shifter and have a look at the seat bushing m, since it's a dumb bit of plastic that apparently falls apart eventually and makes shifting a bit of a drag, even though my shifter has very little slop in it? That's a good idea!! Oh it's fine, no need to replace it, I'll just spend an hour taking half the interior apart to try get these 4 tiny retard bolts back in then Also removed a switch from the dash that obviously was hooked up to spotlights at some point, and pulled a shitton of associated junk wiring without electrocuting myself once So much cleaner up in behind the headlight now! Although there are some sockets that sort of look like they ought to be attached to something. And my park lights stay on with the headlights now and I don't remember whether they did before or not. The FM radio seems to get way better reception now though, it was rubbish before Also chased a mystery, obviously not factory, wire back along the chassis to this rats nest, it's running power into that aluminium finned thing, any ideas what that is? Reckon I'm good to rip it out? gimpsuitjones fucked around with this message at 04:05 on Jun 12, 2016 |

Turns out it's a voltage converter, hooked into the light circuits for the trailer plug, with very light gauge wire and extremely ghetto connections, with a hot wire from the battery routed in an exceptionally retarded route along the chassis. Better leave it in and not fry every trailer I hire. But might tidy up the wiring at some point. Also I have a leak around my windscreen.

Scored four factory Prado 15x7" alloys with worn 31" All Terrains and a 5th brand new AT. Got a buyer lined up for my worn out Kumho muddies and poo poo steelies so the change will cost nothing and the muddies were past it anyway. Looks better with the alloys at least. Handles like dogshit with 4 wheels and an extra tyre in the back though, mad body roll

# ? Jun 18, 2016 04:49 |

I'm an insufferable nerd about my diesel consumption for some reason, which is weird for a person driving a 31 year old 4WD shaped like a brick. New rims and tyres gave 11L/100km flat on the (quite hilly) drive home today (199.8km), slightly larger diameter tyres than the old muddies. And that was with 150kg of other wheels/tyres in the back of the truck so I assume it will be better without that extra excess weight on board
