In the classic Wolfensteins, is there anything that beats the Mutant Death Dance as the literal worst thing? Hmmmm.

So, the final level of Spear terrified me as a kid. Not sure when I exactly played it, as I played it after Doom was out, but I remember the final boss with its sudden change of environment and the spooky ghosts really bothering me. Consequently, I never beat it!

Oh yeah, Doom hosed me up around the same time that SoD did. I remember that childish dread being nearly overwhelming and reminding myself that stopping it all is just a ESC button away. I also remember being super pumped at fighting not one but two "bosses" at the same time at the end of the first episode. (soft spoilering that since we're not there yet ) That I remember this so vividly 24ish years later says something.

Huh, so the game I played as a kid was the sequel to Catacomb 3D: Catacomb 3D Abyss. It had a nice sense of progression as there was a different tile set and monsters for each level.

I'm trying to imagine what modern sequels/remakes of these two would be like and for Hovertank all I got is "first person Brigador"

how much did games like this cost again? I think I recall you would get your shareware episode and then it would cost $15 and mailing fee for the rest of the game? Did you have to do that for poo poo like Hovertank and Catacomb too? That just seems like a waste of money

Though for the 2 Softdisk games we just did, I'm pretty sure it worked through some kind of magazine subscription thing. If I remember correctly, Softdisk had a monthly software catalog, and the bimonthly gamer's edge catalog, and Hovertank and Catacomb were part of that. No idea how much the subscription cost though.

Both sequels are better design-wise, with way prettier areas and more interesting monsters, but there's literally no music instead of a repetitive track so that's... maybe good?

That just seems like a waste of money I have no idea about the cost but I'm fairly certain buying the full game got you a catalog with everything they had for sale as well. I'm mostly curious about people who bought the full game abroad, did they have to import the full version back in the day? By comparison the shareware would spread far and wide pretty much anywhere an IT guy might be asked to travel for work.

Aces High posted:is Catacomb 3D using Commander Keen music? It sounds really familiar Even better, that menu interface is ripped from the later Keen games as well. It's reskinned, but it's the exact same menu. Even the little pong thing is there. Edit: I could be wrong but I think some of the wall textures are graphics lifted from Keen as well. In the level with the fake portals there's a block with a grey slimy looking wall that I'd swear is straight out of the tar island level in Keen 4. Holy poo poo, Catacombs 3D uses literally everything from Keen 4: the music, the sounds, the graphics, the colour scheme. That's really weird. Also if you need someone to talk over Keen with, I've got 31 videos of me doing just that. But please don't do Keen GBC, I haven't erased it from my memory quite yet.

Shadowcaster felt much more like it was set in real environments rather than just rough schematics of some poorly defined building, compared to Wolf3D. That's just my impression from your short video here. I'd say the reason it isn't better known today is probably because of its bad interface.

Shadowcaster's inventory system is exactly the same as I.M. Meen's. I wonder if they based it on the Shadowcaster engine?

I knew about the automap, and used it for like a second around the 3 minute mark. I just didn't find it terribly useful due to the way it maps things out.

it's crazy that you are doing all the licensed stuff in addition to the games made directly by ID. See you stumble around shadow caster was driving me nuts. I remember the manual had a bunch of useful tips like Kurt being able to swim but the cat beast getting hurt by water, because it's a cat you see. good luck with the rest of the LP you'll need it. burnaboy fucked around with this message at 11:05 on Jun 4, 2016 |

Well dammit. I just stumbled on this thread, and I had been planning on doing my own Doom megathread once I had a little more confidence that I could put out videos that weren't complete poo poo. I'll probably still end up doing it, since I plan on doing strictly Doom games and modding all of them. (Except DO4M of course) Definitely good to see that there is a decent amount of interest in this though.

Speaking of Doom mods, I haven't mentioned yet, but we're gonna be playing vanilla Doom until the source ports come into existence. I hadn't even thought much of it until it was brought up. Hopefully it won't be a problem for people.
