Not all blended whiskeys have neutral spirit in them. Nor do all whiskeys have caramel following added. Whiskey is not bourbon and this thread is filled with a lot of retarded misinformation. Legally bourbon must be 51-52% corn mash minimum, 24 months in a NEW oak cask. There is no geographic constraint on bourbon production. Neutral spirit is not 'vodka'. Neutral spirit is a high proof, generally corn based concentrate spirit that can be redistilled and have the hearts pulled from the run, or just watered and filtered down through charcoal. This makes vodka as most people know it, at least your big name brand producers. Edit: one of my customers just bought a bottle of hakushu 12 year Japanese single malt and let me try some as I was typing up this post. They stuff is tasty.

It's not as cool as you think. Lots of smelly idiots at 10am shaking so bad you'd think they have Parkinson's, not raging alcoholism. Many hours bored, reading books and watching TV. Many more hours arguing with the mop bucket over foreign policy. He likes Fox. And as I've mentioned over in the retail thread, the ice machine keeps telling me to kill myself for wasting my life. So it's not all fun and games.

Ezra Brooks is cheaper than Evan Williams around here. It is also 90 proof vs 80, and tastes as good. So I am amending my vote to Ezra Brooks. I am drinking some right now as I stare at my phone while waiting to play the winners of the current game of cribbage. My 60 year old cribbage partner is nursing some Hartley's brandy. Back when I was on active duty I had hipster friends begging me to buy MS from the Class VI (on-base liquor store) just for novelty purposes since it's probably ghastly but can't be bought except on military reservations.

Evan Williams is my go-to for having a nice glass on the rocks in the evening. Jim Beam is ok in a pinch when you're at a bar or restaurant, since you'll normally never see Evan Williams outside of a liquor store. It's not cheap but also try Knob Creek if you've never had it before. IMO Bulleit bourbon is overpriced but their rye whiskey is good and the bottles look cool I guess. Jack Daniels is Tennessee whiskey, not bourbon, meaning that it's filtered through maple charcoal, so having grown up in Kentucky I am legally required to tell you that it is dog poo poo and you should stick to straight Kentucky bourbon. But it's ok I guess.
