Man, this is a bummer because she was chewed up and exploited by multiple industries and nobody seemed seemed willing to get her some help.

Funnily enough Vince Russo fiercely defended her. He had her on his podcast after she moved to Japan, which I think she had done to get out of her remaining commitment to Vivid to make more porn movies. He offered to help her move back to the states and to involve her in some things he was working on, and he seemed really concerned about her well-being.

She was IC Champ. She may not have been a great promo or whatever but it was enjoyable seeing her go over folks like Jeff Jarrett and Chris Jericho.

Chyna was more over than Jeff Jarrett and I am forever grateful that he had to job to her.

I think Chyna was cool as the really buff woman who wasn't great at promos or in the ring, but had a great look and knew how to make it work despite limitations. Sucks that the industry really did a number on her.

yeah I was surprised when I saw all that go down. I was happily getting high and watching her vlogs from Tokyo. They were so amazing and genuine. It was pretty clear her mental state was fragile but she seemed to be making the most of it.

Plus there was weird dancing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVOsEVkomJs

Did Chyna even try to meet them halfway, or did she always just approach them like none of their previous stuff happened? Because it seemed like she never stopped badmouthing them.

Guardian writer is using Chyna's death as an example for the need for stronger protections for wrestlers: http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/apr/21/chyna-death-wwe-wrestling

quote:

In a sense, Joanie Laurer lost the legal right to be herself. Of course, she wasn’t actually Chyna, but she worked around 350 days out of the year in that persona. Wrestlers are also encouraged not to break character in public. In her first Playboy appearance, she was billed as Chyna, not Joanie Laurer. Unlike an actor who appears in multiple films and TV shows, playing different characters, a successful wrestler plays the same character every single day for years. It’s as though your job was to be a mall Santa year-round, but you couldn’t take the costume off to get almond milk at the grocery store. Every thing that she had become, her entire identity, was taken from her in an instant.

Joanie Laurer might have passed away, but WWE still owns Chyna, who will live on via WWE Network, a Netflix-style streaming service that offers a seemingly infinite repository of wrestling history. Vince McMahon has staked the future of his company on the Network, hoping fans will pay $9.99 a month to watch original programming, plus historical content from the vast WWE video library. The Network is a major source of growth for WWE, but most ex-employees don’t see a dime of royalties from their work. A lawsuit was filed against WWE by Rene Goguen, better known as the character Rene Dupree, in an attempt to force them to pay up, but Goguen soon found out that he had signed a contract that contained a clause whereby he unwittingly forfeited all his rights to back-end streaming royalties. Unlike countless other professional sports, WWE has no union, and therefore no protection for its employees (who are deemed independent contractors). NFL, MLB, NHL, and NBA players receive compensation when one of their jerseys is sold or if they appear in a video game through their players’ unions. They receive pensions and health benefits. None of those protections exist for wrestlers. To WWE’s credit, they offer assistance to any wrestler who needs to kick a substance abuse issue, but they have yet to address whether intense working conditions contribute to these problems.

She was pretty good in situations where she could act without talking, like her match with Eddie. She could convey emotion well, and despite her limitations in the ring, could still pull off an entertaining match.

My Uncle and cousin ran into him once at a restaurant in the early 00's and he was really chill and let my 12 year old cousin take a picture with him. I don't think I've heard many stories about him being an rear end in a top hat, I mean there's the implied stuff about how his booking reflects his probable views about women but that still puts him way over a lot of guys in the biz. Unlike Steve I don't think he ever, you know, beat the poo poo out of a woman, or like some still employed WWE wrestlers possibly dragged one through a hotel by her hair, he just booked a lot of really unsettling angles at times (but then again, Beaver Cleavage was Vince's idea...).

And the mercy seat is awaiting,
And I think my head is burning,
And in a way I'm yearning,
To be done with all this measuring of proof.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth,
And anyway I told the truth,
And I'm not afraid to die.
We're in a world where Chyna is being mentioned in the same line as Prince and David Bowie because she showed masculinity in feminity and they showed feminity in masculinity.

It's always sad when a wrestler dies. It's especially awkward with Chyna because her days were so troubled. Meltzer talked a bit about her on the Filthy Tom show and... it's Dave so he's rather cold on the whole thing. If you're feeling super passionate or upset about the WWE stuff, you probably don't want to give it a listen because it might piss you off (At Dave, I'm saying)

So what did Chyna die of I have been assuming its something hosed up as its such a young age to go and she has some obvious mental health issues.

She was a major player in the attitude era alot of people not just wrestling fans know her.

RIP Chyna
