I do not think the people passing these laws are aware that they will simply be struck down, nor do I think that this is a cynical Ploy just to rile the bass up. Well that would have been absolutely true 15 years ago, in our post Tea Party World, I really think that these are genuine true believers who have been elected to positions of power that are pushing these policies. I was about to ask if you had read Prester Jane's thread about this, but something tells me you already have

TinTower posted:If you fancy spending a few hours in the abyss, do enjoy this so-called Marxist-Leninist spending five posts blaming the Trots and Jews for gay rights and blaming the gays for the Holocaust and the death of MLK. I decided to read this for a laugh, but... I can't recall ever getting this angry at an article. I'm usually more emotionally detached, but something about this has just left me completely seething. I'm... Just so angry. Is it the self-righteousness? Is it the author treating the words and beliefs of political philosophers like infallible gospel, seemingly refusing to consider the possibility that the historical figures he respects and admires were flawed people like everyone else and may have had questionable views? Is it the fact that he's so blatantly disregarding any evidence against his ideas, just so he can declare there never were any in the first place? Is it the shocking lack of empathy and understanding coming from a supposed ardent leftist? Is it the fact that he'd so willingly ruin the lives of all of us here in this thread just because he can't accept that his role models weren't flawless beacons of humanity? Or is it the fact that he's a fundamentalist zealot who treats Stalinism as if it was his religion? I stopped reading at the end of part two, I can't get past this: Fred Phelps: Red Son posted:
I genuinely loathe this person. I can barely handle the pure loving contempt I feel towards him. That's something I haven't been able to say about anyone for nearly a quarter of my life. Nobody. Not a single person. I'm not used to hate, not like this. It's... Not a good feeling. I kinda regret clicking that link. e: Sorry for the rant, but I really had to vent after reading that. Good article though, thanks for sharing. I've seen too many leftists online denouncing identity politics as "a distraction from the real issues." gently caress off.

Treating old dudes from the past as infallible fonts of wisdom is probably one of my main annoyances with a lot of people on the far left. It's like they can't accept that their idols were normal human beings who were perfectly capable of having both good and bad ideas at the same time. Morality isn't a zero-sum game. Of course, "treating old dudes from the past as infallible fonts of wisdom" is popular across the board, particularly with the right, but I keep expecting the Left to be better than that. Turns out left-wingers are just as fallible as anyone else.

spotlessd posted:Wow this didn't take long at all, did it? Who'd have thought a forum that exists entirely for smarmy liberal morons to congratulate themselves would spend more time pathologizing any view that doesn't fit into a tweet than actually engaging the argument. Tell me more about this irrepressible font of wisdom known as "the middle". Capitalism is garbage and the workers should control the means of production. Doesn't mean any of the big far-left philosophers should be treated as infallible beings who do no wrong. The entire reason I brought that up was because I've seen it happening several times, like the guy linked in this thread a while ago who claimed that homosexuality had to be bad and wrong because Marx, Engels and Stalin didn't like it. Thanks for making massive assumptions about my political beliefs, though.
