for real though, gandalf is probably the basis for like 90% of wizards in fantasy fiction but he was a demigod and I think having divine power makes you a cleric technically? plus dude like hardly ever actually cast a spell, he mostly just gave advice and poo poo. really far as old school fantasy wizards go jack vance was way more on the ball than tolkien.

 Mazirian gets hosed up by some plants in pretty short order but he's a pretty cool vancian wizard, and I think hes the origin of color spray which we can all agree is a pretty useful wizard spell Turjan is where it's at tho, really you can't go wrong with Dying Earth if you like wizards and wizarding E: it's also pretty heavily implied that magic is based on math and the reason wizards can only remember a few spells at a time is because they involve memorizing complex mathematic formulae, which is a cool and fairly logical reason for that restriction and something D & D should have cribbed from Vance along with everything else oh god what is wrong with me free hubcaps fucked around with this message at 23:49 on Apr 25, 2016 |
