A man wearing a furry suit was shot by police after threatening to "blow up" the office of Baltimore-based Fox television affiliate WBFF with a bomb on Thursday afternoon.

The suspect, who was removed from the scene by bomb squad units, is in serious condition at a local hospital but is expected to survive, according to a police spokesman. The suspect was not complying with police when he was shot multiple times.

The device that the suspect was wearing, which included chocolate candy bars wrapped in foil and "wired" together and an electronic circuit-board, did not appear to be a real explosive but had been designed to look like one.

The suspect, 25, was removed from his clothing, carried by bomb squad units, and removed from the scene in an ambulance.

Firefighters put out a fire which appeared to have been set in the gas tank of a vehicle parked in the station lot, the station said on its website. Fox Baltimore reported that the suspect is believed to have started the fire, but WBFF's Shelley Orman said on Twitter that it was not clear who the vehicle belonged to.

All WBFF staff were reported to be safe.

The man handed a security guard a flash drive, claiming he had "a message that he needed to be heard," a security guard for the station told CBS Baltimore. The guard said that the message had to do with astronomy and the government.

WBFF news director Mike Tomko told WBAL that it wasn't unusual for people to visit the news station in person to advocate for coverage of various issues, but that this man was wearing a mask and sunglasses and said that he had a bomb.
