Beltane is the pagan holiday May Day comes from. This is a fertility festival and where the "may pole" comes from. On another note, it is the basis of the Wickerman From wiki: Beltane is the anglicised name for the Gaelic May Day festival. Most commonly it is held on 1 May, or about halfway between the spring equinox and the summer solstice. Historically, it was widely observed throughout Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man. In Irish the name for the festival day is Lá Bealtaine and in Manx Gaelic Laa Boaltinn/Boaldyn. It is one of the four Gaelic seasonal festivals—along with Samhain, Imbolc and Lughnasadh—and is similar to the Welsh Calan Mai. Beltane marked the beginning of the pastoral summer season, when livestock were driven out to the summer pastures.Rituals were held at that time to protect them from harm, both natural and supernatural, and this mainly involved the "symbolic use of fire". There were also rituals to protect crops, dairy products and people, and to encourage growth. The aos sí (often referred to as spirits or fairies) were thought to be especially active at Beltane (as at Samhain) and the goal of many Beltane rituals was to appease them. Most scholars see the aos sí as remnants of the pagan gods and nature spirits. Beltaine was a "spring time festival of optimism" during which "fertility ritual again was important, perhaps connecting with the waxing power of the sun" May Pole Beltane celebration Wickerman The May Queen Today the May Queen is a girl who must ride or walk at the front of a parade for May Day celebrations. She wears a white gown to symbolise purity and usually a tiara or crown. Her duty is to begin the May Day celebrations. She is generally crowned by flowers and makes a speech before the dancing begins. Certain age groups dance round a Maypole celebrating youth and the spring time. Been working on more alien creatures for my space fast-food restaurant scene. A pretty solid sketch of a tentacled-beaked-slug alien. It needs to be a bit more lithe overall, but it's a solid start. Fake edit: Sigma 6, continuing the conversation from the April thread. People aren't saying you have to actually draw the skeleton, but rather you'll block in the rough skeletal lines and shapes of the body before focusing on the details. I can see improvement in your work, but you're getting obsessed with the details too early and making your work suffer because of it. Meaning that you're making it more difficult for yourself to improve because you're devoting time to doing it "wrong" so to speak. I did the same thing when I started out drawing, and I'd be far further ahead skill wise if I hadn't spent years getting caught up in the details of a piece before composing the entire scene. Real edit: I get the distinct impression that you're drawing what you think you see rather than what you actually do see. I highly recommend doing blind contours and non dominant hand drawing, as well as simply drawing the shadows rather than the forms. It looks like you're still using mechanical pencils which are fine, but while you're trying to learn and improve it's absurdly beneficial to use a wide variety of mediums. Mechanical pencils, while convenient, can't offer the texture and coverage of a traditional pencil or charcoal. If you're feeling really brave try doing a 4-shade marker 5-10 min drawing on a large note card. I use Prismacolor French gray, 70, 50, 30, & 20%. The subject matter is generally unimportant, but the concept is to use quick, broad strokes to block in the dark/light areas and build a monochromatic scene using light and shadow. dog nougat fucked around with this message at 01:51 on May 2, 2016 |

I have a lot of copics not being used, which should be some sort of crime. Drawing in the skeleton or even rough skeletal shapes seems daunting in 10 minutes or less but right now it is about consistency and getting proportions right over anything else. Another quick one from life. ... and one from my imagination. I know they don't line up properly but it is just brainstorming ATM. Happy (somewhat belated) May Day!!

Hi shiny thread! I am still keeping up with my cat a days, I've just been neglectful to post here due to...well, laziness I suppose. I'll try to get back into the habit of posting here every day again My first two cats had a May Day theme, so that's good for kicking things off. The (original) Wicker Man is one of my favourite films, so I did a cat Lord Summerisle

Did an alright value study of the tentacled-beaked-slug alien. I drew it a smaller than I should've, so I'm not insanely proud of it. My lines are a bit shaky and unsure. I'll have to do it again. Here it is all "bad" lookin n poo poo.

Meaning that you're making it more difficult for yourself to improve because you're devoting time to doing it "wrong" so to speak. Yeah mostly this. And 10 to 20 minutes is more than enough time to get in a wireframe skeleton(that is fairly accurate in shape and proportion to a human skeleton) and then the shapes of the actual flesh. Don't expect them to be perfect at first, do a bunch of quick like 30 second to one minute drawings where you block all that in, don't erase, stare at the awful results and move on. I never spent too much time drawing individual muscles unless they were obvious enough to seem important so no it doesn't need to look like a medical text book illustration by the time your done. This isn't a perfect example of what I'm talking about but I like Sycra's video tutorials better than most so here's a thing about constructing figures from him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kK71t-I-2w

In my experience, ink and marker are good for practice sketching. They encourage working fast and loose, and when you screw up there's no going back. Don't obsess over every line, work in confident strokes. Same general idea as using charcoal, but less messy and more portable.
