NJPW Wrestling Dontaku
May 3rd 2016 from the Fukuoka Convention Center
4:00 AM EDT/9:00 AM BST

Captain New Japan and Juice Robinson vs. Bullet Club (Bad Luck Fale and Yujiro Takahashi)
Taguchi, TMIV, Finlay, and White vs. CHAOS (Ospreay, Saku, YOSHI, and Gedo)
IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Championship:RPG Vice (c) vs. Matt Sydal and Ricochet
NEVER Openweight Trios Championship:Tanahashi, Elgin, and Yoshitatsu(c) vs. BC Elite
IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championship:Guerrilas of Destiny(c) vs. GBH
NEVER Openweight Championship:Katsuyori Shibata(c) vs. Yuji Nagata
IWGP Jr Heavyweight Championship:KUSHIDA(c) vs. Jushin Thunder Liger
Hirooki Goto vs. EVIL
Kazuchika Okada vs. SANADA
IWGP Heavyweight Championship:Tetsuya Naito(c) vs. Tomohiro Ishii

The GDT may be late and half assed but the card looks amazing. All five top singles matches should be good to amazing and only the opener is total filler as even the second match should be worth watching to see the newly signed Ospreay vs the Young Lions.

Ishii and Naito had a true MOTYC caliber match two years ago so while the outcome is hardly in doubt this is still a hell of a main event. Shibata vs the Third Gen old guys has been one of the best feuds of the year and Nagata's probably the best of the lot. Liger's shown he can still go at a high level in the truly important matches and his first IWGP jr title shot in 6 years should certainly qualify and facing a top level worker in KUSHIDA should certainly help.

Really though, the most interesting match ont his card in many ways is Okada vs. SANADA. This is SANADA's first singles match in the company and a win over Okada would instantly cement him as a main event level guy. An Okada/Naito rematch seems like the most logical main event at Dominion which would point to the Rainmaker winning this, but the company has shown a willingness to push new talent and go in some surprising directions now that their hand has been forced so who knows?

The one concern is the venue. Fukuoka crowds have usually been pretty quiet in recent years for NJPW and the ticket sales for the Hakata Star Lane show were weak. Hopefully a strong card creates some excitement and stirs up some late ticket sales.

While I doubt the gate's the best for this show judging by how dark they're keeping the upper levels at least the people there are making some noise

wow that was cool as gently caress

i should probably watch more ricochet/matt sydal matches. i feel like whenever i see njpw tag team matches its always in four-way clusterfucks where only the young bucks stand out because they're the young bucks

i guess ricochet isn't going to wwe anytime soon huh

That match was really good but why take the belts off Sydal and Ricochet in the first place if you're just going to have them win again on the next show? Goddamn it Gedo.

They're both outstanding wrestlers who work really well together. Rumor is that Ricochet is still considering the offer he got from LU alongside his NXT offer, and even if he takes the NXT deal he has to wait a while for the non-compete to expire.

He's already said he will be. Hoping for a Ricochet/O'Reilly finals because that is one of the absolute best matches I've seen in person.

He's already said he's in BOSJ. Dave seemed to be guessing he'd take the LU offer and regardless since they're rarely successfully defended anymore they can just have him drop it to reDRagon or the Bucks if necessary

yeah, i don't know what I think of this. A ladder match would be awesome for a jr tag title match imo but for an a title that's actually been treated with some importance? Not sure if I like the precedent.

The match should be fun at least

So this ladder match was Tanahashi's idea all along, right? It's out of character for NJPW but maybe he wants to try different stuff now that he's not the top guy in the company anymore.

For those who aren't aware, Volador Jr is CMLL's top tecnico under the age of 50. Wonder if he's gonna win to set up him vs. KUSHIDA at Dominion? You'd think they'd want a guy of that level to win if they're sending him over.
