From what I recall Lplasma came into the irc channel and talked a bunch of crap about S&I being a low tier mod. He might have tried to play in some pub server and sucked? I am not sure.

It was, however, seemingly VERY important to me at the time.

Oh god this sounds familiar. Did it end with us installing DC to go make fun of it? I do remember The Trenches a World War 1 mod poo poo talking SI or maybe the reverse. It's all hazy and extremely dumb!

Only bad thing in HL2 was lack of enemyy variety (generic alien and stormtrooper guys) and loading times every 50 feet but otherwise it was 9.5/10. Also i liked the airboat and didnt think it was too long for some reason

I just remember loading up TFC, and seeing that splash page that was "click here for exciting updates on TF2!!!" with all the HL1 cheap soldier model skins.

That page stayed unchanged all the way to the creation and launch of steam.

This is some straight up ship of theseus bullshit, but I always wonder if VALVe is even in the videogame developing business anymore. Selling them, deffo. But like all their modern titles are either developed out of house (Left 4 Dead/earlier CS games - Turtle Rock, CS:GO - Hidden Path) or were developed from indie titles where they hired the developers. What the gently caress do their employees even do besides maintain steam and develop hokey peripherals and lackluster attempts at consoles?

the launch of steam was especially cool because valve used many duplicate CD keys prior to it so many people couldn't register their games

Valve definitely have 0 incentive to makes games anymore. Like Steam has made them richer than God by now and there's absolutely no reason for them to blow a massive chunk on developing games when, like you said, they can farm it out to one of their acquisitions.

Which makes me so so sad because HL1&2 are my favourite games ever made and I've resigned myself to the fact that 3 is never coming 😢

dota is their biggest cash cow and they still haven't ported all the heroes over 5 years after it was released to open beta.

I was a beta tester for Desert Crisis (used to go by JunkyardDog until I shortened it, in case anyone from those days is still reading this) and hung out in their IRC channel for years until they all eventually left to get industry jobs. The reason the mod has that name despite the vast majority of it not taking place in a desert is because one of the members went ahead and registered the domain name without making sure everyone was on board with that title, and then they were stuck with it. Their leader was LPlasma who used to be a modeller for Action Half-Life. He and co-lead Spongerock were... intense, for lack of a better word. Very hung up on their own egos and there was some bad blood between them and the Science & Industry team for a while. LPlasma works for Bethesda last time I talked to him and he's calmed down a lot since the DC days. Spongerock has remained a total rear end in a top hat though from what I've gathered from catching up with past members. Not to say there weren't good times, I had a loving blast playing that mod and contributing where I could. Shout-outs to Holamundo, Junubee, percolator_fish and Soul Escape.

Wasn't there some kind of ruckus about donors getting custom face models or something? What was the deal with that?

I really liked that Zombie Master mod where it was a bunch of players versus one observer player who could go all over the map and spawn different types of zombies, and also activate traps. Some of the maps were serious and had a basic plot, but others were really silly, like the Tetris ones that were just a giant Tetris game you had to get to the end of without getting crushed by Tetris blocks that the ZM would spawn.

Played a heap of this mod. The quality really varied depending on how good the map maker was but some of them were a fantastic amount of fun and challenging for both the survivors to win and for the zombiemaster to handle all the different poo poo around the place.
