Anyone remember one that was basically the story of Apocalypse Now? That was my favorite and I don't know why it stuck in my head all these years. Agree with thread title.

HL had a really half assed sound track. 90% of the game didn't have music. In the rare instances that HL decided to play some lovely techno, I'd always alt tab to turn off winamp

I didn't really get into Half-Life modding, other then Day of Defeat. It was all about Quake II modding for me.

I spent so many hours on that game, and I miss it sometimes. AHL was good, then the update wrecked it and it was never quite the same. The diving mechanism made for a lot of fun, though!

I miss Natural Selection, that game was awesome. The sequel is alright, but suffers from me not having a minimum of 3 hours to spend on a single round.

Yeah. Halflife 2 mods were cool but for me Action quake 2 and Rocket arena 2 were where its at. I also liked one called Devastator quake 2. It was just a deathmatch mod with powerups that gave you either a double chaingun mech or double rocket launcher mech and it was fun as hell.

I think I still like action quake more than counterstrike. I'm old.

blast from the fuckin past OP holy gently caress. I played every one of these and way more. Truly the golden age

I played counterstrike from beta 3 up until around a little after source, I was actually unaware for years that it got more and more popular to where it is today. I remember the guy who made it almost stopped working on it at beta 4 until gabe loving newel asked him to keep it up lol. I hope he gets royalties

Fun fact im sure EVERYBODY will enjoy: my copy of half life is so old (1998) that it was one of the grandfathered "ID's" that stayed the same throughout all the half lifes and major mods (including counterstrike). Since counterstrike was just a regular mod, anybody who already had it didnt have to pay of course when it went retail, and that ID number carried over. Also my gun names stayed the same so I could make fun of the noobs calling their poo poo like the Black Hawk or whatever the hell they had to do for retail

But one turbo nerd was looking up people's ID's in game for some reason and offered me like $300 on the spot for the account, however by the time I had too many games in steam. I didn't realize until later that my copy was so crazy old I had a CD with a CD key I could have sold him

Slowly but surely every other game released used "aspects" the mod was promising until it finally became completely irrelevant.

Yeah, goldsrc (half life's engine) is just a very heavily modified quake 2 engine. In fact most fps game engines were all derived in some way from quake and quake 2 engines until about the late 2000's. Here's a chart

that chart doesn't mention cod which still uses idtech3 code deep in there somewhere.

half-life had lots of great mods, like Zombie Panic. Source got an updated version too, then the team updated it again and re-released it as a standalone game but it they made it suck by adding in hordes of NPC zombies

Wow didn't expect anyone else to remember this, much less mention it within the first few posts of the thread. DC owned. Despite sounding like a tacticool Gulf War simulator you were doing flips and firing off laser rifles all over the place.

Half Life 2 still had some good poo poo, remember Dystopia? Still some of the most satisfying hit indicators in a game. Eternal Struggle was great too RIP, and Empires was hella impressive even though I kinda hated it.

E: I think there was one really early S&I release for Source and they promised it was just the beginning and then it was never heard from again.
