Milk's on them.

The item world and its powergaming ilk are way, way too time consuming for me. I might pop in every once in a while when I feel like my stats need an upgrade, but all the stuff I have to do eventually becomes incredibly daunting and that's usually where I put the game down for good. Any Disgaea game, really. It's just so mind-numbingly boring after a certain point.

I play Disgaea for the main campaign, is what I'm saying here. :downs:

I will say this is the friendliest postgame a Disgaea game has had up to this point. Once you've got stuff rolling you can cycle someone through level 9999 reincarnations in like a couple minutes a pop.

I never really worried about the postgame stuff. I'd just play the Item World to get free randomized tactical battles. Every once in awhile I'd try whichever bonus maps I'd unlocked that looked feasible. Bum-rushing straight towards 9999 is certainly one way to play the game, but it's not the only way; once the campaign's finished you pretty much can just make your own goals.

Ten: The Raid

First I’d like to apologize, Chapter 3’s updates will be split into three by two maps instead of two by three maps. Between illness and some distractions I’ve just not been able to record as much as I’d like and that’s what’ll work out best with trying to keep the LP on schedule. That said, let’s hit up Grosso’s castle.

Video- Castle Wall Defense

Fans of the original game will also find this place has a familiar feel, it’s clearly intended to evoke Hoggmeiser’s castle.

Prince, this place has a lot of expensive looking stuff. You want us to take it all, right?
Of course. Everything my old man owned is mine. And everything his groups owns is also mine…!
Don’t hold back. Take everything!
Umm, Laharl…don’t you think you’re losing sight of why we came?

Grosso shows up to greet us.

I didn’t think you’d get here so fast! My calculations were a bit off, or so it seems.
Haaahahahaha! Don’t take me so lightly!
If you don’t want to lose all this stuff, you better accept me as your Overlord.
That’s a great idea. Not to mention, that’s quite a self-centered deal.
…I-Is this even okay?
Huh? An angel? Why do you have an angel with you?
Oh, she’s Sicily, Laharl’s little sister.
Wh-What!? Th-That’s preposterous…! His sister!? An Angel!?

Grosso isn’t buying it.

It’s not nonsense! I am Overlord Krichevskoy’s daughter. Which makes me Big Brother’s little sister!
Do you take her serious, Prince? Do you trust this…foolish angel?
I haven’t decided yet. However, she accepts me as the Overlord, which makes her that much better than you.
I see…
As I thought, you have no right to be the Overlord!
While we’re getting ready, feel free to sit here and look pretty!
Hmph! I’ll make you sit here and look pretty! Here I come!!!

The map’s going to explain one of the big gimmicks of Chapter 3, annoying defensive setups.

The Gargoyles, huh? They have an Evility Increase DEF as long as they don’t move…
We need to find a way to force them to move. If we just go charging in, they’ll beat us.
Maybe I can talk them into moving!
Flonne…I don’t think that’ll work.
Whatever! We just need them to move! Do it already!

So yeah, as Etna said those Gargoyles are at double defense as long as they don’t move, which isn’t great for us.

Even worse, they’re backed by Archers and Grosso himself. So, our answer to their Evility is to lift and throw them, which will negate their Evility and let us smash them (they’re actually pretty low level). Once we get through the Gargoyles there’s just a meaty center of fragile Archers to smash and Grosso, who’s pretty easily dispatched.

Video- Heartless Main Gate

Watch

The second map of the chapter is a similar setup, with a bit of a Geo Symbol twist.

We’re up against a similar shieldwall of Gargoyles, five Ninja who evade attacks from the front at a high rate, and a pair of Gargoyles who can double their move next turn by not moving this turn. The Green panels increase Defense, while the Blue ones are No Entry. This makes clearing the Defense increase problematic, because it’ll turn the Green to Blue and leave everything No Entry, forcing us to restart the map. We want to throw the Gargoyles out of the + Defense area entirely to negate all their extra defense, at which point we have a few options. We can just slug it out with the Ninja if we want, which really favors us since their defense is poo poo even at +50%. We can also clear the No Entry symbol, which lets us throw them just out of the green and really body them. The map’s just not that dangerous, the defense increase really favors us since we’ve got healing.

Next Time, Disgaea D2: New Enemies. The Mermaid and the Djinn.

It's a bit early in the game for them to be quite so rude as to make the Archers stay on the pillars. That would make the map really quite difficult.

They have unique abilities that only those monsters get, while most humanoids are reliant on weapon skills and the variances in their stats instead. Evidently sometime between Disgaea 2 and now, the different humanoid classes at least started getting a spell or two each, but still, most humanoids are basically "find the class that can use the weapon you want" or "make one of the spellcaster classes". Monsters are all over the place with their abilities though, so they're more interesting even if they aren't necessarily more useful.

Disgaea is very flexible in terms of what makes a viable unit: as mentioned before, Mothmen might generally suck, but they're great for the Item World, and there are generally a large number of item/class combinations that can make pretty much anything work, like using a Beastmaster with a Spirit (ghost) to make it far stronger than any mage will be without serious item grinding.

Generally speaking, if you just want power, buy all the DLC characters and use them together with the story characters, as generic units can almost never compete with them. You won't get many super-powerful combinations, but each character is strong enough on their own for those not to matter.

And if you want real ultimate power, train up a mage knight to level 9999 with maximum banked levels and maximum equipment aptitude/skill/spell ranks, and equip them with fully-leveled super robo suits with fully-leveled specialists, etc. etc. etc.

Because nothing says victory like being able to appear on the entrance tile on the hardest map in the game and one-shot the entire thing, without moving.

There are great monster classes, just not the ones we've seen so far. Sea Angels have amazing and unique buffs and can increase the experience gains of the whole party just by being out. Dragons are actually not awful, and the fire and ice equivalents might even be better. Succubi are honestly kinda broke and I'll definitely be making one once we unlock them. And of course there are some really baller monster type DLC characters like Metallia, Gig, and Overlord Priere.

Feinne

When you fall, get right back up again.
Let's talk three more humanoid classes. First will be the last of our starting class pairs, the Healer and Cleric. Then we'll hit the first unlockable class, the Thief.

Healing and Stealing

We'll start with the Healer and Priest/Cleric. The Healer is female and the Priest is male, and you can tell because one has tits. I originally thought one was the other and I might still be wrong!

Weapon Skills: Healers are B with Staves and Bows, C with Books, Spears, and Swords, and D with Fists, Guns, and Axes. Priests are B with both Books and Staves, are C with Spears and Bows, and D with everything else.

Stats: While both classes have high SP and RES, their actual stats are otherwise pretty different. Healers have slightly more HP, more ATK, and significantly more HIT in exchange for slightly less DEF, less INT, and significantly less SPD. Healers are probably best equipped with Bows honestly, they're really weird.

Evilities: Let's start with the Healers.

Corpse Heal - Increase recovery by adjacent units x 50%. I 'think' this means adjacent to the Healer, which means you want them to be in a tarball for maximum effectiveness. It's pretty strong since it lets you keep them covered by someone Defending if you want.

Advanced Healing - When healing, heal target an additional 25% of their max HP. This is an interesting option, it makes our weaker healing spells much more effective on strong targets.

Book of Medicine - Attacks based on RES when book is equipped. This is a really cool choice, because it makes all their regular attacks use their superior RES instead of their kinda blah INT if you use a Book.

Now for the Priests, who are kinda way better than Healers.

Light Salvation - When healing, heals self, too. Always a good option, it keeps her topped up while she's doing her job. Just keep her from getting one-rounded.

Light Protection - When healing, increase DEF and RES of target by 20%. (Lasts 3 turns). Honestly amazing, given you are getting two buff spells merged into one of your healing spells. Being able to take three actions at once is always a really strong choice.

Book of Magic - Magic range and area are based on weapon mastery when book is equipped. If you want to use Books this is the choice, because it makes Books act like Staves.

Spells: Both classes get the same spells. At rank one they can get Heal, Espoir (3), Mega Heal (10), Shield (15) and Magic Wall (15). At Rank 2 they can pick up Giga Heal (20), at Rank 3 Enfeeble (30), Mind Break (30), and Omega Heal (40), and at Rank 4 Tera Heal (80).

Thief:

Thieves are unlocked by having a Martial Artist or Fight Mistress at level 5 or higher. They are notably MUCH better at stealing than any other class.

Weapon Skills: Thieves are notably pretty poo poo with weapons. They are C with Bows and Guns and D with everything else except Axes, which they are E with. You never want them any closer than they have to be anyway, because they are poo poo-fragile.

Stats: Thieves are probably better stats-wise than they've ever been. They've got mediocre HP and DEF, poor ATK and RES, and above average SPD. Go with Guns is what their stats say.

Evilities: Thief Evilities relate to HL and Treasure Chests.

Finger of Luck - Increase the Item Rank by 3 when defeating treasure chests. So, this is mostly useful in the Item World where high-rank Treasure Chests are common. We can get some baller items in theory this way.

Gold Finger - Increase HL earned by 100% when defeating enemy units. A generally pretty useful thing, HL is actually quite limiting for most of the game.

Treasure Sensor - A treasure chest will always appear when defeating enemy units. A great Evility, this can have us rolling in free (if random) items.

Skills: Thieves get some unique skills that are pretty cool.

Stealing Hand - Thieves don't actually need Hand items to steal thanks to this skill. They can still use Hands if they want of course, but not needing it is part of being Best At Stealing.

Create Box - At level 20 Thieves get the ability to create Boxes, which can be used at steps. Useful when you need it.

Create Barrel - At level 40, Thieves get the ability to create explosive Barrels. I think you can also stand on them if you don't mind that they blow up when killed. I think the explosion will also trigger Prinnies, that sounds like a thing that would happen.

They might as well not. A character who casts a healing spell receives XP equal to 5% of what they would've gotten if they'd managed to defeat an enemy unit of exactly their class and level, so once in a very great while, you'll see a character level up off Heal.

Yeah you really, really want to get them either a damaging spell or good with a weapon if you want them to level up.

They can be a good candidate for 'person who uses bows to get the bow mastery we need for Archers and Ronin'. It's definitely worth it since Archers are okay and Ronin continue to be loving amazing.

I think they still can, though I'm honestly not totally sure. Thieves actually rank up most of their weapon skills at Rank 2 as well now, so if you chose Guns/Bows as their weapon aptitude they have a goddamn A rank which is scary respectable for a class normally notable for being really poo poo. Part of that is to make up for the fact that while the stealing formulas still favor them, anyone can steal at 99% in theory now.

Also somehow Vanillaware has made Odin Sphere look better, I'm not sure how that's even possible.

We also get some great expressions.

He said something about getting ready. I wonder what that was all about…
Hmph. I’ll destroy this castle if that’s what it takes to get him out here.
???: I can’t allow that.
Who’s there!?

Meet one of the new monster types, in the form of our second member.

This is Rainier the Sea Angel.

Gh! Stop it! Don’t push your body up against mine!
* huff * * huff * Rainier!? I don’t know you!
That’s not nice. You really forgot about me? I used to take care of you when you were little.
Whenever you wouldn’t stop crying at night, I’d put you to sleep by smothering you.
I don’t believe you! Wait, then I’d be dead!
I guess Big Brother doesn’t like busty women.
You’re absolutely right, which is why he doesn’t like me.
Yeah! Me, too! He doesn’t like me, either!
O…kay… R-Right…

Exactly. King Krichevskoy never discriminated against anyone, not even a country bumpkin like me.
He seemed entertaining, so I decided to find treasures for him.
I’m actually from a family of treasure hunters, you know?
I don’t care about you. Answer me this…
Do you think that I’m less of an Overlord than my old man, too…?
Haha! Please. What, pray tell, part of you is better than he was?
Gh… Dammit… Fine…!
I will engrave into that sexy body of yours just how terrifying I am!
that sounded pretty perverted, Prince.

Technically Rainier’s kinda wrong because Laharl’s probably already and definitely potentially a lot stronger than his dad was. Anyway let’s look at this map.

We don’t have a rude Geo setup this time, but notice those chests? Let’s take a look at Rainier and get what this map is about.

As a Sea Angel, Rainier is a monster caster with Ice magic. Her Evility makes all her allies stronger for each chest on the map, which is pretty nasty since maps including her generally make sure to let her take advantage of it. The map starts at +20%, which is bad for us. We want to set up on the first turn, then rush the chests and Skulls and Gargoyles below. An enemy Skull and Archer will each mount a Gargoyle on the enemy turn one, watch for that nasty combo. If you can get Rainier out of position you can alpha-strike her pretty well since she’s got poo poo caster health but otherwise just deal with the chests and the map’ll go fine.

So during the video for this next one there will be a bit of a blip, my computer crashed a bunch on this map for whatever reason and I just had to assemble this from the least bad take. Apologies.

We’ve got one more member of the Group to meet, and he’s the best because he’s voiced by Jamieson Price. Really the next scene is conspicuously well voiced.

Did she say her name was…Rainier?
It sounded like she used to work for King Krichevskoy when you were a baby.
I don’t remember ever seeing her, but I do remember hearing that you had a lot of people taking care of you.
I see… They must’ve really cared about you, Big Brother…
Not quite.
They all just wanted to eat his baby food.
…That’s terrible.
???: Hmhmhm… How careless of you, Prince Laharl.

Who are you? Another one of my old man’s group members?

Meet Garungun. His monster type is ‘golem’ but I think they’re supposed to be genies of some kind.

I will be sending you straight to Hades. Lend me your blood and bones as you fall into your eternal sleep.
Wow! Did you hear that!? He sounds so cool!
Sooo, where are your wings?
Heh… Those without an evil eye cannot perceive them.
This guy’s annoying…
You can send yourself to Hades. In fact, I’ll even see you off.
So, you fear me not? How foolish, hehehe.
I’ll summon the Majin in my left arm. When he unleashes his Godspeed Astral Force, you’ll be reduced to ash. Shall that be your fate?
I don’t know what’s going on, but it sounds like something super crazy is about to happen…
This is getting exciting!
Only you, Flonne… Only you…
A Majin? Interesting… I’ll destroy your Majin, as well.
Hmhmhm… Then I shall sear his image into your eyes!
Majin that is sealed within me…! Obey my commands and demonstrate your strength!

Guh! What!? Has the time still not come!?
Prince, this guy’s really getting on my nerves… Let’s kill him already.
I agree.

This is an interesting map, and back to Geo setups. The red carpet here all has a DEF+100% effect on it, and in this case we’ll actually be keeping it. We’ll use positioning and throwing to ensure we benefit from double defense while the enemy gets fuckall. We’re up against eight martial artists, two regular Golems, and Garungun himself. Golems get stronger at low health, and Garungun’s got the most aggressive version of such.

So, to be clear about his Evility, if we damage him below 25% and don’t kill him he heals back to full and gets a stat buff. This is bad, so we need to plan our attacks out such that it won’t happen. Gauge your attacks based on the bars and it’ll be pretty straightforward.

Next Time on Disgaea D2: The Netherworld’s Evilest Warrior Appears! Surely these freakshow idiots have chosen an entirely normal and reasonable person to support for Overlord.

Fun Etna trivia, while she's picked up some accessories she's still basically in the same outfit from original Disgaea, which in turn is the same thing the Succubus monsters are wearing. Which begs the question, is she simply the world's worst Succubus or is she just dressing aspirationally?

Honestly a lot of how old the cast looks depends on how they're dressed. Flonne shows up in Disgaea 4 (she's literally in promotional art and such for that so I have no problem discussing it) and costuming is most of how they convey she's theoretically a grown-up (in Flonne terms). Same with Laharl, they keep his shirt off because he'd come across a lot more mature if he had one.

Well of course, all of the original cast are actually pretty competent (at least at something) on paper and in isolation. Then they get together and spend as much time bickering as accomplishing things. Apart, Etna and Flonne accomplish all sorts of things while Laharl subsists entirely on frozen waffles because being the strongest demon in the Netherworld doesn't translate well into household skills.

It's not even about competence, really. It's more about the rest of the main cast (all women) being completely defined by this male main character who I hate, which is really lovely for more than one reason.

There's a character a lot like Laharl in Disgaea 5, and he's a lot more tolerable because he's not the main character, and because he's not an obnoxious child.

I actually like Flonne in 4. I think she works really well when she doesn't have those other two chucklefucks dragging her down.

Huh interesting I actually ended up mildly disliking Flonne in Disgaea 4. It really didn't help that she was revealed in the last leg of the game were the story had taken a nose dive. However in this game I definitely found Flonne more enjoyable.

I... I can only look though the window...
One of my favorite things about D2 is just how unprepared Cecily is for the insanity that is Overlord Laharl and his crew. The poor girl just has no idea what's going on and it's great. :allears:

Although next time, you would be wise to heed the ancient Japanese proverb... phone first!

There's a character a lot like Laharl in Disgaea 5, and he's a lot more tolerable because he's not the main character, and because he's not an obnoxious child.

Clarifying: You mean Zeroken, right?

Yeah, Flonne's graduated from the role of 'straight man' she had for a lot of Disgaea now that she's settled in and Sicily takes it over nicely while also adding her own wrinkle of insanity to events.

Though my favorite new character is the one coming up in the next update, because every scene she is in is loving magic.

I wasn't sure if he meant Zeroken or Red Magnus honestly. Both have some similarities though also to me more differences (also both own because Disgaea 5's cast owns bones).
