To some extent, TAOCP is the Emperor's new clothes in the computer programming community. Over the years, it has gained a cult status in the community, to the level that you cannot say any bad things about it. Like all those 5-star reviewers, I had been told how everyone should read this epic volume from the smartest programmer ever, and I myself was a keen admirer of Donald Knuth and TACOP when I was in college. But after 20 years in reality, I have to say TAOCP is actually a terrible book for computer programming. It was written to show the "smartness" of the author rather than teach you good programming skills. The maths & personal insights are still valuable (that's why I gave it 2 stars instead of 1), and if you have a lot time to digest the bits you may benefit from it. But most of the algorithms listed in the book are over-complicated and practically useless, unless you want to use the mighty 6-bit decimal (not binary!) Mix processor in your job. It is also ironic that Donald Knuth has famously said (or has he) "Premature optimization is the root of all evil", because TAOCP is filled with hard-to-read tricks that are nothing but best examples of premature optimization. So, buy it only if you need something to decorate your book shelves. Oh, it is also an awesome monitor stand.
