Stereotypically, around maybe 13 or 14, teenagers adopt their first bad philosophy. All it takes is a Rage Against the Machine album, watching V for Vendetta (or for the advanced type) discovering a paperback of Nietszche's at a used book sale. Boom! Suddenly you are a militant communist anarchist nihilist! Very loud and angry about it, until three weeks later you smoke some shake weed and decide that peace, love, and going with the flow are the REAL answers! And so on. The reason that this is a stereotype is that it really happens. It certainly happened to me, several times, as a teenager. And I was probably just as loud and angry and annoying then as teens are today. The question is: what were your first few bad philosophies, what caused them, and what did you take away from them? (As much as I laugh at it now, I am pretty happy that I was reading Nietzsche as a teenager)

I only ate meat from animals I personally hunted and killed because life is precious so it was immoral to eat meat unless I personally joined the food chain and violently ripped that precious gift away from another living creature. I shouldn't devour the flesh of the dead unless I was willing to kill for it. Then I realized that guns were unfair and started bow hunting. Then I realized that unless I was attacking deer with my hands, I was still cheating the system so I started eating like a normal american.

My bad philosophies: right before I turned 14, I discovered my mother's old copy of "Be Here Now", and together with whatever standard classic rock songs I had access to (The Beatles and Led Zeppelin), got into a mystical phase that combined pretty much standard hippie beliefs. I also talked about drugs a lot, even though I wouldn't even smoke cannabis until I was 20. As annoying as parts of it were, it actually was pretty beneficial, because I did read widely in philosophy. Like I started with Be Here Now and ended with Saint Augustine. Anyway, that lasted about a year. Right before I turned 15 and Kurt Cobain died, I got all grim and gritty and got into existentialism, fueled by angsty grunge music and Anne Rice. It was this sharp turn from a philosophy of wholeness into one of despair. Again, this was annoying and stupid but also pretty beneficial, because I read up on my existentialism. I eventually cheered up a little, or perhaps got angry, which led to my third bad philosophy. Around the time I turned 16, I got into more of a resistance philosophy, inspired by Public Enemy and reading about Native American warriors. Part of this was me adopting a faux-ethnic attitude and the like, and it was also pretty annoying, but it also meant I was putting an effort into understanding other culture's history. So kind of my journey of bad philosophy went from wholeness to despair to resistance. Not a bad path. I still keep parts of all the things I believed as a teenager.

I was actually pretty straight edge as a teenager. I didn't drink or use cannabis until I turned 20. One time a friend of mine and me got high off of some type of anti-histamine preparation. One reason I was straight-edge was later in my teenage years, when I was in community college, I had a lot of leeway in where I went and what I did. I took a 1000 mile Greyhound trip as a 17 year old. I slept in parks and wandered the streets. So I kind of thought I needed to keep some type of personal self-discipline and boundaries since I was doing this dangerous stuff.

The first anime I saw was some version of Jack and the Beanstalk and it was awesome, then I watched Vampire Hunter D and thought that was awesome so I went to the movie rental place and checked out some more "Japanamation" and it didn't take me long to realize that I had already seen the only two anime movies worth watching (yes I watched Akira and it bored the hell out of me)

Dr. Dogballs Jr. posted:anime I was born in 1979, so anime was kind of after my time. I mean, I am sure that it wasn't for everyone, that there were some people ahead of the curve, but I wasn't one of them. I remember at the age of 20, in 1999 or 2000, going to a library in Portland and finding a copy of Ranma 1/2 manga up on the shelf and it seeming like it was quite the exotic oddity! And that was just for an entry-level romantic manga.

Neon Genesis Evangelion did change my life, but that didn't happen until I was in my early 20s.
