the deskmini x600 is going to be amazing as a work pc if you can put a 7900 non-x in it most often you'd stuff an 8600g in it since SODIMM ram speed isn't good enough to fully utilize a 8700g

Hi all, this is my first SA post. I'm in the Saskatchewan Canadian tundra and am wanting to build a new TV living-room SFFPC. Will be used for media/same-screen (co-op and sports) gaming. Currently using one I built 6-ish years ago (SG13, 1300X, 1060 6GB, L9a) that has my heart, is quiet and has treated me well but isn't keeping up for living-room gaming. I've been reading this thread since last summer and these posts from June are particularly interesting: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?noseen=1&threadid=3776587&pagenumber=135&perpage=40&highlight=L9#post532439526 Already purchased a Fractal Terra Case. Thinking 7800X3D. Could get another L9a and undervolt CPU if the L9a is lacking. This would leave more space for GPU options in the sandwich Terra. 7800 XT for GPU maybe?? I'm lost on MOBO. TLDR; Looking for advice/suggestions on MOBO/GPU that would pair well with the Terra case, L9a(?) and 7800X3D (undervolted if need be).

Something used off eBay might be a better use of that budget, but NUCs are kinda having a moment right now so there often isn’t a ton of supply. This one looks decent, maybe? 8h left and 2 bids, so will probably be higher in the end. NUCs cost a premium for their compact size, so a small office desktop that fell off-lease might be an easier fit for $400. Never mind, I was a bunch behind.

You probably get more out of spending the CAD 160 (or less?) on a good USB DAC but someone else or audio threads here will have more specific advice.

if youre gonna use an external dac, the board model doesnt matter for sound quality as long as you have enough USB ports. youre bypassing the built in sound hardware and DAC completely and streaming a digital signal from the OS over USB to the external DAC, so as long as the USB port works, youll be gravy on that front.

Alternatively you can use HDMI to your receiver. I use my onboard GPU HDMI port to feed audio to my receiver. This gives me all the channels of sound I desire with no extra hardware. I am limited by the age of my receiver (no Atmos) but it was "free"

so, about that venus um790 pro with ryzen 7940hs... will you actually be able to run over 3840x2160@30hz with that machine with linux? i know it's mainly a 1080p gaming kind of machine, but for watching media it would be neat if you could get a proper hz output over 4k, like 120Hz or something. i'm asking because of the hdcp debacle with radeon and linux - even if the card should technically support it, i don't think it will on linux without having displayport connectors. just wondered if anyone knew anything about it, or has tested it out?

to answer my own question, it might be possible if you use the usb4 connectors in front instead of the hdmi connectors. that makes it kinda ugly to have in your living room, but maybe that's a small price to pay... (if anyone has gotten like 4k@120/144Hz working over hdmi with radeon on linux, please do tell)

(It does sporadically lose signal but I think that's a cabling, EMI or faulty monitor HDMI 2.0 port on my end.)

is55 with stock 15mm fan = 57mm height I think I read. Can't fit a A12x25 cpu fan. Set case on adjustment 4, I think (will check today.) Mounted A12x25 to bottom inside of case. PSU cables are within 2mm of touching fan blades. No space for fan grill, unfortunately. Today I shall attempt to undervolt the 7800X3D. Edit: After watching this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o50N7LnYB-8 I used the BIOS to lower Core #1 and #5 (#0 and #4 in BIOS) to -0.15. I lowered the other six cores to -0.30. Ran TimeSpy, Heaven and 12 minutes OCCP stability test and idled afterward with no apparent instability. CPU idles at 49C. GPU idles 45% silent. Above the case, there is only a bit of breathing room. I really ought to put a bottom fan in my Terra. When the case first came out I saw people saying a bottom fan didn't do anything or actively made temps worse but everything I've seen since then seems to indicate it helps a lot.

This weekend I would like to stress test the temps with case fan working normally and with it disabled though the BIOS. Will be interesting. Edit: MSI Afterburner in too tiny on 4K TV so I've just been using NZXT CAM but it has no graph/history. Can anyone suggest a program that has a comparable time/temp graph to Afterburner? 2nd edit: I screwed up the tests. I will be back April 20 and will post results with pics. I was pissed off by that too, but there's a UI scaling slider. Under settings, click the tab arrows along to the far right until User Interface, and then for me it was hidden down at the bottom and I had to scroll down to see it. It's below the transparency setting at the very bottom. 150% and I can see it from the couch fine now (but yeah, WHInfo is great too. I tend to use both)

My oh my, you are quite lucky I was researching how to resolve that exact problem yesterday. Here's a video that may help you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WwcPuRSe4c If that tutorial doesn't work, you may have to follow the steps in this tutorial instead. The youtube video should be enough to solve the problem, but I can't help but love that "make a copy of the program, and the copy will have the compatibility option for some reason" works. I currently have two copies of Windows Media Player -- the normal sized one, and a slightly bigger version.

While I'm aware the good answer is "buy a laptop", bear with me. Is anyone making a relatively portable sized PC, prebuilt, that can game? Not necessarily some of the Roku sized NUC stuff in this thread, as it seems hard to find those that will game, but still something that is small and portable? I'm helping a friend look for a portable PC that can move between houses, but for whatever reason doesn't want a laptop. Is there anything like that? Maybe a mini-ITX prebuilt? I wouldn’t personally buy it, but I think this might work? I have a feeling it’s full of proprietary parts and is loud. https://www.newegg.com/asus-g22ch-ds564-rog/p/N82E16883221761 I think it said it has an extra nvme slot so you can add the 4tb ssd you need. Says it’s about 10 liters in size, which I find is about the upper end for backpack pc size.

Just keep in mind that those minisforum PCs are using components designed for laptops, and the only upgradeable/replaceable parts are going to be the memory and storage. If that's an acceptable compromise, then the 6650M is going to be good at playing most games at 1080p, though for the latest AAA games you may need to drop down some presets or use upscaling to maintain 60 (e.g. your alan wake 2s or UE5 games). It's still just a laptop in a box though, and it's confusingly close in price to the cheapest discounted RTX 4060 gaming laptops while being a decent bit slower than those. That SFF PC from Asus is definitely going to run hot and loud, but it'd also be a bit faster than those minisforum mini-PCs. But the minisforum PCs are definitely going to be the most portable of the lot--those things are tiny.
