Minecraft and terraria are/were hugely popular games, just cause there are flops doesn't mean there aren't also successes.

Why are randomly-generated games still a thing?

Like, I don't get it. I thought we all figured out that, no, it's not "limitless possibilities" and "never the same game twice", it's just boring as poo poo the first time, and then it's just as boring the second time and the third time. Oh wow, a computer generated universe populated with generic enemies and randomly placed resources. I'm so glad I have an infinite number of boring-rear end planets to explore, free from the oppressive influence of artists and designers.

I am totally capable of playing Space Engine for hours, and it's just an insane universe planetarium that has no gameplay to speak of. I just chill out in the void and take beautiful space photographs and try to find crazy planets.

your ship, your suit and your tool/weapon are all craftable and componented, and progression is based off that. for instance, theres' good poo poo in freezing cold planets or burning hot planets or underneath oceans and poo poo, so your ability to go get those things and survival is gated by the poo poo you stick into your gear to make it go. and you got to get a better hyperdrive to go other places, which as you get closer to the center get weirder, more lucrative and more dangerous. you can find blueprints to build entirely new poo poo or find poo poo on the ground, from killing poo poo or in boxes and so on

the same slots you use for components you use for resources, so you have to make tuff choices whether to have better gear or carry more poo poo

the ships, suits and tools are all procedural too so everything you find is unique to you, and it usually comes from one of the four intelligent species in the game, who have different priorities and style
So it's like that terraria in space game but you can't even play it with your friends to ignore how terrible it is. Wow!!!

Well I Imagine you will be able to play it with friends, just not for a while, maybe months depending on how much you play. But each player has a path to the galactic core on their map and there are many galaxies; this would indicate that galactic cores are like hubs to other galaxies. Once players reach that point I imagine those core regions around galactic hubs would see some traffic and it's probably where most PvP would take place (but that's a guess).

As one of the only worthwhile PC titles in a while I'll be getting it, and I'm hoping for things that could happen long down the line. Even if it doesn't pan out, still worth more of a look than most things in a while for the PC.

Not really seeing why they couldn't let players form groups and just scale up the challenge a bit to compensate like in other cutting-edge procedurally generated games such as Diablo 1.

Because games where you lobby up and shoot things with your pals already exist. Point of NMS is to to go where no one has ever been before and have that be meaningful.

I mean I understand what you're saying, but this game isn't much about jumping into combat right away, though you can be a pirate I suppose. Moving toward the galactic core grants you the time to gather resources and explore while upgrading your equipment and ship. This would seem like good preparation for making contact with other players, so you don't just get blown out of the sky by players as soon as you get close to any transportation hub. But also down the line you have the ability to form player factions, control territory, I mean the possibilities are there. There's not a ton of coordination in-game but on the PC third-party chat programs make that less of an issue. I'm not super-hyped for this game... but I hope it surprises me.

> e: I want to add, it's mentioned in text at the end of the video that life is scarce. Most planets are uninhabitable, many habitable planets will have only basic lifeforms. A very tiny percentage of those have advanced life (perhaps life different from the main factions?). So you can get even more unexcited about snow planets and sun-baked hellscapes(?), perhaps something like Pluto or the moons of a gas giant. To me, that's interesting.

I dunno, poo poo like diablo 1/2 was p hype, there's a fair amount of good procedurally generated games out there, just a lot of bad ones too, but the same could be said for almost any core design.

The 21 minutes of gameplay with the dev looked pretty cool but I got the impression that with ships you buy/trade for and specific mechanics like the land shaping gun there's going to not actually be that many novel things and it's mostly gonna be getting better enviro suits and tools to allow you access to areas that let you make even better enviro suits and tools and so forth.

Isn't eve smaller and more combat focused? Like players gather large fleets of ships including capital ships and fight it out with other people, that kind of thing.

In NMS you may start completely alone in that particular galaxy player-wise.
