a lot of people are just not very smart or talented. should they just be cursed to a lovely life with no dignity? because that's the way it is now. we need to have meaningful social roles that confer a bit of dignity and security for people who aren't dynamic innovators or computer geniuses, people who are actually maybe a little bit dumb. thats what manufacturing and unions used to do, but those are gone forever; we need to find a new way. this scratch and claw your way to the top or die trying stuff is no good.

Pretty much. There will always be a bottom rung no matter how equitable society is or how easy it is to move up/down based on merit. There's no reason it has to suck so much to be there.reptileintheswamp posted:Economic imperialism is pretty cool IMO and we should do more of it I'm not personally complaining about anything, I'm doing fine. Do you still have to go through basic training and meet physical fitness requirements to be a non combatant/support staff in the military? Say I was a radio communications engineer.

Had a friend join the usmc and he came out with anger issues and a (worse)drinking problem. Do we have to be subjected to being yelled at and "follow this encyclopedia of rules or your life is hosed" in order to succeed?

No, of course you don't have to follow prescribed ways of doing things. It's just more difficult. An analogy would be; you can go to school, learn a thing before doing it or you can just start doing it. One path is just more difficult then the other.

there is a lot of dumb bullshit in the military and it really sucks sometimes, but you'll get treated better than some minimum wage retail poo poo job. Just do your three years, get out, go to college debt free. I was a recruiter for the Army, and if anyone has any legitimate questions about joining pm me. I'll give it to you as straight as I can, though everyone's experiences may vary. I'm not on numbers or even in the army so I have no interest in helping the Army out. I really don't even like like it that much! That being said it has put me in a better position to succeed in life than without it. I did 12 years in the army and never killed anyone or any of that poo poo. At the end of the day its just a job with haircuts and uniforms, and lots of really dumb people telling you what to do, but unless you're just a belligerent idiot its incredibly easy to stay out of trouble. I'm going to regret this

I make 60k a year, moved out on my own, and thanks to student loans I'll be check to check for the next 20 years and my son won't have a college fund! Although, hopefully by then he'll be some sort of hyper soldier or something and won't need college. 60k a year used to be not bad, you could save, pay your loans with outrageous interest, and put money away. It's definitely the cost of living/wage gap that's not keeping up, and as long as there isn't a violent revolution, it will continue to be this way

VendaGoat posted:Willing to say where you live? Sure, I actually just moved to central Ohio from south of Washington, D.C., aka southern Maryland. Part of the reason was to get out of moms place, we had retreated BACK when we became with child, which was also really necessary since he was 2 months premature(doing awesome now). We moved out here to Ohio since the lady has family here so we weren't too detached from family. But basically a 2 bedroom anywhere where in MD save for the absolute boonies where there aren't jobs, will cost you at a minimum $1200 monthly, without utilities, and likely still increasing. Our 2 bedroom townhouse, at 1000 sq ft, costs us less than $900.00 including water. We could sit here and do my budget here, but the fact of the matter is, poo poo is already tight, and if you got suckered into a for profit college to pursue your dreams, you're actually way worse off than people that didn't and got into a trade. I went to culinary school since I had been cooking for 5 years, got hosed, realized I was getting hosed and dropped out, now I pay $800/month at 19% interest,, and am actually behind because I would rather have food in my fridge, and the dream of having great credit and buying that beautiful so called asset of a house is fading. I once was a chef, but things change, and if I hadn't dropped everything, started changing oil at a car dealership, utilized manufacturer training and sheer god drat drive to learn, I wouldn't be a qualified technician making a career out of servicing high end cars. I would probably still be another 10 years out on making 60k in the cooking world. It's a rough industry. Now yes, definitely my choice to sign up for said nonsense arts college, but what's particularly lovely, is if something were to happen to me, injury, death etc, that debt goes directly to my consigner, dearest mother. Now check this poo poo out, if at the time I was signing the promissory note for a massive private education loan, that person was like "hey listen, you need a consigner, and this poo poo is expensive, and if you don't get a ballin rear end chef job, you and your mom are going to be on the hook big time, maybe reconsider.." I would probably have gone home and put some serious thought into what I was getting into, and maybe would have gone with a safer plan. INSTEAD, said person was like "dude I can't believe you haven't signed up yet, by the time you're done here, you're gonna be a sous chef making the big monies, plus FAFSA dog, they're gonna give you money n poo poo, shits gonna be baller!" That in a nutshell, is what's wrong with the system. As for the "millennials" op speaks of, I would probably just blame their parents. Edit: also the old lady did the exact same thing, at the exact same school, it's where we met! Lol

What also sucks, as a auto tech you get paid by work performed. So in essence, he more cars you fix or service, the more money you make. You do not get paid to be there(in most cases). So these other Podunk mechanics I work with do half as much work, often shoddily, but have cool cars, houses and other toys and just love to flaunt them, thanks to them not pursuing any education beyond highschool. I feel as if I have been punished for doing what I was told to do throughout highschool by everyone.
