Paul Keating has come to the rescue of Anthony Albanese, using his first election campaign appearance to launch a withering attack on the "pathetic" Greens trying to unseat the Labor frontbencher.

The acerbic former prime minister was in fine form on Saturday as he emerged to excoriate the Greens, accusing them of splitting Australia's progressive vote and standing in the way of real reform.

"They're a bunch of opportunistic Trots hiding behind a gum tree trying to pretend they're the Labor Party," he declared in his address to the party faithful in Mr Albanese's inner-western Sydney seat of Grayndler.

Mr Albanese is fighting hard to keep the seat he first won in 1996 from falling to Greens candidate Jim Casey.

The battle is drawing precious focus and resources away from Labor's bid to win marginal seats off the Coalition.

"He's out here defending himself against a political party which is for no other reason than opportunism to try take his seat in the House of Representatives," Mr Keating said of Mr Albanese. "And therefore by doing so diminishing the capacity of the Labor Party to form a government in its own right."

Greens leader Richard Di Natale "got up my nose" by claiming the Greens were the natural choice for progressive, mainstream Australians, Mr Keating said.

"The Labor Party is not a protest party, it is a party of government. And that's what the Greens have never understood. They're a protest party, they're not a party of government," he said.

The Labor Party has "completely remodelled the country" through its economic and social reforms.

"And yet we have the Greens saying that they are the natural home of progressive, mainstream Australia. Really? How pathetic."

He also pointed to Labor's environmental credentials on the Great Barrier Reef, national parks, ozone repair, renewable energy and climate change.

The Greens on the other hand "torpedoed" the Rudd government's original Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, he said.

"This is the real environmental party, the real conservation party," he said. "We're more Green than they are."

Mr Albanese is widely expected to challenge for the ALP leadership next month if he holds on to his seat but Labor loses the election. He ran for the leadership against Opposition Leader Bill Shorten in 2013, attracting more grassroots support but failing to carry the party room.

Mr Keating's intervention is being seen by some in the party as a de facto endorsement of Mr Albanese for the job.

His appearance came just a day after he penned a newspaper letter attacking the Turnbull government's company tax cut policy.

Lol what a pathetic little tirade.

An independent would have to be mad to accept the speakership during a hung parliament. Why would you give up political influence during the only time you've got any?

This whole hung parliament thing sounds cool but instead why don't we just give every seat to the LNP?

So sad, I grew up with golliwogs and they are an item of love as is the teddy bear. There are black people and white people, there are red Indians and yellow Asian people we are all the same under the skin....and there are dolls of every colour. I think the people that are doing this are the racists ones....they are narrow minded and stupid, I don't think any black people would be offended by a child cuddling this toy, if they are then it's them that are racist not us!
