Ok, what point is worth putting that kind of thing in a public place, or broadcasting it?

"<public figure> sucks dick and is gay" isn't the kind of thing you should throw around for a joke.

The shallow characterization of Free Speech they are ostensibly critiquing here is a straw man, and Leyonhjelm is well within reason to call that poo poo out.

The point that it shouldn't be allowed in the first place? because it's offensive?

The original slogans were just "girl/slut/etc." instead of DL. The point is that the they are both offensive but DL has a double standard in saying one is "funny" and acceptable while the other isn't. Isn't that obvious?

Wicked Campers slogans are 'funny', Senator says

But Senator Leyonhjelm said the company had done nothing wrong.

"They make some very funny statements, which obviously have sexual connotations," Senator Leyonhjelm said.

"But surprise, surprise sexual connotations are part of life.

Wicked slogans 'gain free publicity'

Wicked Campers do not use slogans like "suck away" to promote sexism, but instead gain free publicity, a media commentator says.
"You need to be a particularly wowserish type of person to not find them funny."

Apparently sexual connotations are part of life unless they're HOMOSEXUAL sexual connotations, then it's highly inappropriate.

The chaser people then show that we he said about the backpacker vans has consequences via the skit with the hope that he will be outed as a hypocrite. This doesn't happen so they just act like wankers outside his house in an attempt to provoke a response. It really was a petty and childish skit.

See above.

His reaction does out him as a hypocrite.

It's not. That's the point. I'm agreeing with you.

If the slogan was something like "DL is gay LOL" I might agree it's homophobic. It wasn't. The joke here is that the slogan imitates the original Wicked Camper slogans, not that DL likes cocks in his mouth.

MonoAus
Nov 5, 2012
Because the context of the joke here is that it imitates the Wicked Camper slogan and reflects it back on to DL, not that DL is gay.

The joke is showing DL up for being offended when he's the target of a questionable "joke".

Taken without context, yes it's homophobic.

Amethyst posted:

You need to learn to read. Literally nobody in this thread doesn't get the joke. You don't need to explain it to anyone. That doesn't invalidate the critique.

"This fag would look great with a cock in his mouth" was not the joke and wouldn't work for this situation, it would be homophobic and not show DL as a hypocrite. If you keep bringing up incorrect equivalencies then everyone will assume you don't understand.

Or perhaps winning on such a knife edge result will give the Liberals 3 years to implode in to nothingness. You make it sound as if Labor (edit: winning with a minority government) would have actually had any positive impact on the things you've listed. You are a needlessly aggressive man.

It is sobering to see more evidence that we (The West) are actually the bad guys. Russia is prepared to let our head of state physically threatening him slide while the US won't tolerate an alliance signatory wanting some control over the disposition of nuclear weapons (and systems) within it's own borders. Yeah, we are clearly the reasonable people here.

This is off on a bit of a tangent to what you were actually talking about, but Russia/Russians couldn't give two shits about Australia. To them we're small place on the other side of the world that doesn't have anything to do with them.

I find it annoying in Australia how often people get up in arms about what Russia is doing or make jokes about Russian people like it's 1965. That's really not to say there aren't some really hosed up and bad things Russia is doing but the same level of criticism isn't handed out to most other countries, nor is there any sort of self examination on the lovely things Australia does. It's like we're 50 years behind the rest of the world.

Of course that doesn't apply to this thread. Everyone here hates all countries equally.

As you may or may not realise, the next Australian Census will be taken in one month’s time on Tuesday, 9th August, 2016.

For the first time this year there will be a “No Religion” option. Please be careful how you answer this question. Bear in mind that although many Australians have no religion these days, the Muslim population in Australia will all declare that they are Muslim and this fact will be counted to ascertain what type of country we are in regard to religion.

Even though you may now have no religion, please consider entering the religion you were christened or born into, when answering this question. Otherwise in time Australia will officially be declared to be a Muslim country – because the Australian Bureau of Statistics Census will reflect this. Just imagine the repercussions if that were to happen.

For Australia’s future I would ask you to please pass this message on to your family members and friends.
