I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Puppy Linux.

You could try out a ton of different distros to see which you like best by running them straight off a usb stick in a virtual environment.

If you are asking which linux then you don't have the answers you need to differentiate between performance of competing linux OSes. Choose any :)

You can also use keyboard shortcuts to move windows between workspaces which is the more practical way to do it.

Updates don't require a reboot the majority of the time or interrupt anything you're doing.

That's about all I've got for practical everyday advantages that don't apply to a really minimal number of users who probably know the advantages of linux for them already.

Linux from Scratch, or Slackware are good beginner distributions. Linux from scratch is for mothers who like to bake pies, or make bread from scratch, and Slackware is for slackers, laid back 90's kids.
These are much more useful ways to rate the distributions than in terms of security, ease of use/install, documentation, community support, and intended purposes for the fork in the first place.

More well adjusted then you'd think.
If you're doing anything that actually matters, like as part of a job where money and other peoples time is on the line, you use CentOS. If you don't agree you have no business getting paid to do even lovely server janitor jobs.
