Sullivan was Torts' assistant coach pal for a long time and the influence on the defensive play of the Penguins is extremely evident. The collapse down low around the goalie to block a ton of shots is what Torts is known for and is the same style the Penguins played under Sullivan as well. The major differences being Pittsburgh has really talented players who could attack offensively effectively and Sullivan gave his defensemen more freedom to move the puck than Torts did.

I say all this because I'm finding blocked shots more and more aggravating and of course when the Rangers did it, it was all fine but now it sucks (but seriously it's really really crappy hockey to watch unless it's your team doing it and you don't care that the other team can't get anything on net).

But Pittsburgh had basically everything go right for them this year after firing their coach and got everyone on the same page and the GM made some good moves, so nice work

The major difference is that Tortorella loving sucks.

guess who was the only team that made it out of the first round and had a higher rate of shot blocks relative to shot attempts against than the penguins? it was the sharks

pens had 4th highest rate of shot blocks in the playoffs, which meant that they blocked 4-5% more shot attempts than the average team

every nhl team tries to block as many shots as they can, maybe the pens are marginally better at that than other teams because they're faster and can close lanes more quickly. but what they're even better at than blocking shots is creating shots and scoring goals, which is why they won the cup and are objectively The Most Fun Team To Watch In The Entire NHL

This just now crossed my mind to wonder but..... Mike Johnston is getting his name on the Cup for coaching the first 40% of the season, isn't he?

Doubt it. Therrien isn't on the 09 cup, and he coached more of the season. They could technically petition for it, I think, but that has a snowball's chance in hell.

Do they have to petition for Dupuis and for Daley to be on the cup? You have to play half of a team's regular season games or a Stanley Cup Finals game to be on there automatically, right?

Considering he was on the ice and lifted with the cup you know he'll be petitioned. The NHL is pretty lenient about petitions for players. The half the season and/or one cup finals game requirement is so that the 8 or so players who play a dozen games on a sporadic call up during the year don't clutter up the cup. Dupuis is a guy who would've played the whole season if not for injury. There's no way he's left off.

Porter wasn't a bad fourth line guy. Most of those games were under Johnston so it's hard to say how good anyone was in those days.

Scuderi only played 25 games with the Penguins--gods, it felt SO MUCH LONGER than that--but :10bux: says they petition to have his name put on the Cup.

Minor correction, the NHL is pretty lenient about petitions regarding injuries. If you weren't dressed because you were really lovely, they probably won't allow your name on the Cup (see Bickell, Brian). Dupuis and Daley will be on there with no issues, both guys would've been on the roster otherwise.

The Pittsburgh radio guys said people were trying to buy a billboard in Toronto with Kessel raising the cup and eating a hotdog, but were vague on the details. I can't find any other stories about it and it makes me sad that this might not be a thing.
