1440p @ 30fps being upscaled to 4K is probably doable.

Is it just going to be the next Forza and maybe rush job Halo 3 Anniversary by Saber Interactive? I hope they have something good

Crackdown 3, which just had its multiplayer beta that was supposed to launch get canned.

Also it's coming to PC as well.

right so tech specs via that are:

4k gaming w/o scaling
holiday 2017

i expect a lot of backtracking over promises in the future, besides

they say it's 8 cores, but it's still part of amd's construction microarchitecture, so it's really 8 half cores

I was gonna post that the only way that would work is if the UHD blu ray drive was external.

And then I remembered the 360's HD-DVD drive.

That was a thing.

Maybe what they mean by 6 TFLOPS is the combined CPU and GPU.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

how will scorpio integrate with hololens though, that's the real question.

eurogamer on price:
But there is an elephant in the room here: price. Microsoft's brief to AMD in producing this behemoth of a semi-custom design looks pretty obvious - to create the most powerful console possible. The GPU is more powerful and it's going to be larger, which means it's going to be more expensive to produce. Meanwhile, assuming we're right about the 4GB of additional memory, that's not going to be cheap either - when we attended AMD's Munich launch event for Fury X and the Radeon 300 series, we were told that adding an additional 4GB of GDDR5 to the R9 390/390X cost around them around $30 per unit. In short, we would not be surprised to see Scorpio cost significantly more than Neo - maybe even $100 more.

tldr: Scorpio will cost over 100 dollars more than neo just on ram alone before factoring in the Vega chip

phil spencer on no gamer left behind:
Game developers will be able to use Project Scorpio's 6 teraflops of GPU power in any way they wish, and won't be forced to hit a native 4K resolution, head of Xbox Phil Spencer suggested in a video posted earlier this week.
Speaking in the video (below), Spencer explained that Scorpio is a "6 teraflop gaming machine, which will be a great gaming machine for true 4K gaming, giving you a native 4K frame buffer so you can see games in all their beauty.
"Or," he continued, "if developers want to use those 6 teraflops in other ways they're free to do that."

tldr: scorpio will let devs do whatever they want. 4k isn't mandatory and scorpio only modes aren't off the table

I wouldn't be surprised if they adopt a 1440p framebuffer on the Scorpio. People with 4K TVs get a slight upres to 4K, and people with 1080p displays (aka the majority) get a nice downsample a'la Nvidia's DSR and whatever AMD's equivalent of that is on the PC side.

Lots of people are going to see a near 600$ console and consider a pc

Also it's worth noting that almost any PC from Sandy Bridge and onwards is still a perfectly usable with modern games with a modern GPU.

To really notice 4K, the screen has to take up most of your field of view, that means an impractically large TV, a projector, or just sitting really close, such as sitting in front of a PC monitor.

Arguably though, a 4K TV will make 1080p look slightly worse, since it has to upscale 1080p to match the panel, as opposed to natively displaying 1080p.

shadow puppet of a posted:

4K up scaling is just using a 2x2 pixel grid as one, no?

If a 4K TV used Nearest Neighbor to upscale, yes.

But most TV manufacturers use a scaler chip that'll upscale 1080p via something like bilinear filtering, which will soften it a bit.

Granted though, with more picture information to work with, it won't look as bad as going from 480i or 240p to 1080p, but it's still going to soften the image a lot compared to how a native 1080 panel would look.
