Probably cause the natives lost their battle with Canada and Canadiens are annoyed that it happened in a time when totally wiping out an entire culture was semi-looked down upon, so now they have these remnants of a war they won hanging out in their county making them feel bad. Canadiens are jerks.

When Canada became a nation, they signed a treaty saying that native bands get free funding from the government in exchange for most of the land. Status indians get nice things like free university (mostly), tax exemptions on reserves, and other random government benefits that would make a libertarian cream their pants. What happened was the reserves became horribly mismanaged slums where corrupt chiefs hoard money and everyone else becomes drunk lazy criminals that take advantave of the system that Canadians pay for. Aboriginals account for about a quarter of all incarcerated Canadians, despite being about 4% of the population. The suicide rate is also six times higher than "normal". Canadians are sick of paying for natives to drink, do crimes, be lazy, receive government benefits that normal people don't get, and basically do nothing besides live of Canadian taxpayers. Truth is, the system is massively misunderstood. Most natives are perfectly fine people, and many of them don't get the government benefits that most people expect them to get. But most reserves are slums (one has had a boil water advisory for 20 years), and the whole system breeds undereducated alcoholics that break poo poo, steal, murder, and Canadians are paying real money to keep the cycle going. mom and dad fight a lot fucked around with this message at 04:24 on Jun 15, 2016 |

I lived in Washington for a while and I was shocked to hear a lot of hatred for "natives/tribals/indians"in what I assumed was a pretty progressive area. When I asked a few people what was up, I couldn't get a straight answer other than "they are drunks, they steal, the pollute the environment and they're allowed to keep all the good salmon when nobody else is." My friend and I went fishing and it was weird to meet other people on the river who opened up conversations by asking if we were Indians and when we said no, they would say "Good, I hate Indians, they take all the good fish...and they're thieves and trash the place." It was pretty funny one time to have a tackle shop owner in Port Angeles go on an anti-native rant while standing in front of one of those traditional carved wood killer whales hanging on the wall. tl:dr, maybe its a common attitude further up north. fake edit: I think someone I met there once mentioned some treaties let the tribes ignore catch limits and fish in some places where other people can't.

Every culture has a sect of people that they deem lower than them for whatever reasons. I live in the racist capital of the country. It is loving hideous how Aboriginal people are treated. Make no mistake, we're polite, but we have our skeletons in our closet. EDIT: Also we are hella embarrassed/guilty over the Residential School thing, so it's better if Aboriginals go away and stop reminding us of how we used to beat/rape/torture/burn/kill Aboriginals in the name of the lord jesus christ for our white guilt.

The short answer is that most Canadians are lovely racists. The longer answer is that most Canadians are unaware of what the various treaties (there are a lot) signed with different bands entail, don't understand that they don't get a say in how those bands operate, and are in utter denial about the fact that the residential school system (and other prior attempts at regulating natives) count as an actual genocide. There is also a general lack of knowledge of just how dire conditions are on reserves, combined with all the standard resentment that people generally reserve for those who are poorer than them. It leads to a pretty toxic set of opinions, which are typically reinforced by the uncharacteristically conservative news media in Canada.

A lot of the reservations are in the middle of god damned nowhere. Not just hey it's a windswept area off the highway, but literally there is no plausible reason another human being would venture up that way. Like at least with some of the reservations in the United States there might be a decent sized town an hour away, or maybe it's off of a main road. There is zero business case for any of these places. Literally nothing but hundreds of miles of forests, swamp, or tundra. What Siberia was to the Russian Empire, so it is for them, but we sent them there as a punishment and pretended it was a gift.
