To preserve their sense of community and identity they'd want their community to stay together, so that would mean a whole housing development of their own. In a nice neighbourhood of a good city, where there are opportunities, infrastructure, shopping, and good schools and whatnot. They won't want to move from a reserve to a ghetto. The people who already live in those good, functional cities don't want a few hundred natives moving in next door. And while we all tut tut about what a shame it is they have no potable water, the average canadian would be salty as gently caress if we just gave away brand new houses in a billion dollar housing development to unemployable natives. Where is my free house?

I live on the north shore of Vancouver where $2-10 million houses are normal and it's had minimal effect on the two local reserves. They're still slums with rotting old homes and rusting cars on the lawn etc. The one in West Van is making bank from a very popular high end mall (Park Royal) but the average resident doesn't seem to see any of the profits.
