I always try to buy a generation or two back in the line or down the price/performance curve if feasible for this reason when it comes to graphics cards. I've had a 500 dollah card or two in my day and they don't seem to last any longer than the cards that cost 300ish. Of course I've never been a resolution junkie. You do sometimes need the better juice of a more primo card to keep poo poo running smooth up near 2kish.

Building your own computer is incredibly simple these days. There are plenty of guides on line from everything to a breakdown of each component to pricing guides. DONT waste your cash on top of the line components, you should be able to build a great computer for 700-1000 that will be able to run anything out there at max settings for the next 5+ years if not more. Even if you want to keep it near 500$ with a little research you can make a build that will handle anything out there and handle it well, might not be able to run at the absolute bleeding-edge settings but unless you care about that slight graphics edge it should be more than enough.

My desktop is a fairly high end build done by a college kid with rich parents. Kid built it because he thought he would use it more, and eventually decided to put it on craigslist for about half of its actual value because he decided it was taking up too much space.
