That's quite the understatement. Uzumaki is terrifying.

I get my fun here. Enjoy!
Rigel IV is also mentioned on the Simpsons as the home planet of Kang and Kodos, recurring green aliens with tentacles who resemble Cthulhu. The Simpsons has also used evil dolphins in at least one episode, although I don't think Lovecraft started that particular horror meme.

I regret that Leave forgot to show off the game's first chat. It also mentions Umi's pet starfish, which she keeps in her hair if you can't already tell. Weird but fun, I know. I have met a few groupies like her in real life and always enjoyed the experience. Maybe we can still see the chat later on- I hope so! :)

Leave may also have forgotten to show off Cthulhu and Umi's Unite Tech, or maybe we don't get those till later in the game. I can't recall.

Die, pathetic clichéd heroes! At least the Cleric was cute. Bring your wizard friend next time, we'll kick his rear end too! :toot:

I'm pretty sure XLIV is actually a legitimate Roman numeral string; it should mean 44. That said, using that as a place name ("Rigel XLIV") is usually meant to refer to a planet...is Cthulhu saying that there are at least 44 planets in the Rigel system?

Update Three: Not The Reference I Was Expecting...

Howdy, folks, and welcome back! Last time, on Cthulhu Saves The World, we made our way through the cave that leads to Miskatonia, but stopped right outside the city, as I'm a huge tease like that. Today, instead of continuing the story, we'll be doing a sidequest, so let's get crazy.

Let's not waste time and head right into the city.

Oh, yeah, there are a ton of goddamned question marks around in this update.

A lot of our Lovecraft references are in the places that we visit, which shouldn't be surprising.

: and not including it.

I'm pretty sure that it would have been okay, but maybe it's best to not gently caress with Batman. I'm sure he has a contingency plan for this sort of situation.

I wonder if that's his job, and if he's satisfied with his life as a glorified Wal-Mart employee.

Behold!

We can actually enter houses now, and they're not all just open air homes!

:smith:

:smithicide:

I've nothing to say about Cthulhu's cursing.

That's a lot of words. I wonder how many the average novel has.

But, of course, there's a Wikipedia article helping to determine just that sort of thing.

Little does Cthulhu know that this is actually the path to becoming a true hero.

Librarians are the most hidden heroes on the planet, but they're willing to save the planet, time and time again, for low pay and hobos using the free internet for porn.

Ooh, the weapon shop.

And a kid, and a question mark.

Yeah, who the hell saw this one coming?

I mean, Christ, I've seen Shane and wouldn't really expect to reference it anywhere.

Well, it's a Western that's old enough to probably be on Social Security.

Oh, we're not talking about the movie.

Eh, why not? By exploring this town and doing that, I'll have another update done.

Hey, some of the best people I know are dogs.

Don't even try it with that quest log bullshit, game.

Thank God I haven't yet LP'd a game that has a quest log. Is that something I show pictures of? Does anyone even care? And I'd have to be checking it all the time to see if it had anything interesting in it, but that would inevitably lead to wasted time and more footage I have to sift through to get the good stuff.

Though, seeing some of the updates I've made, it's possible I don't fully understand what "the good stuff" actually is.

See, now that's neat. I always liked the commentary tracks of movies, and it's fun to have it in a video game. I know other games have done it, but this might be the first one I've ever actually checked it out in.

This is all laid out just like it was in Breath of Death.

Hrm. I like the looks of that.

But Umi still has her baseline gear, so she could probably use the upgrade.

Okay, that sounds all well and good, but we'll need a heroine to accompany our hero.

...Uh-huh...

This might be a reference I need explained. I Googled the name Khoo and found this bit of news, but I'm not sure if that's what they were going for.

Then again, Zeboyd would go on to work on a couple of the Penny Arcade games, the Rainslick Precipice of Darkness' third and fourth episodes, so it's entirely possible, but I'm just not sure.

So, let's go talk to that old lady.

I'm glad to hear it!

South of there is an exit to the town, but there's other bits to explore, so let's hop to it.

Maybe these children will be afraid of us. That's really my only goal in life.

:stare:

...Oh, he's just talking to her. For a second, I thought Cthulhu was going to have to explain himself to the police.

Oh, Jesus, stop it, you're grossing me out.

Hey, don't go knocking true love. It's the sort of stuff that can move mountains, part oceans, and bring happiness to the worst of times.

And on that note, let's go get plastered.

Maybe we'll get better than some chocolate milk.

Anyone have any idea where to go next? I'm pretty lost right now.

Gibberish, you say? I wonder--

:sigh: Why do I even try anymore?

skin.

I originally read Cathila as Catzilla, and then I Googled that.

I have no regrets.

Is just for killing it, or can we turn the monster in for an equal or lesser bounty? Because I'm sensing a way to get a quick buck here...

Are there any games that let you do that? If not, there should be a game where the player character has a huge bounty on his head and you have the option of letting one of your companions turn you in, collect the wad of cash, and then break you out of wherever you're being kept, and then continue the game, just that much richer.

I'm not saddened by this information at all.

Well, if it involves those three, I think I have one to top all of theirs.

Sir, I am a married man!

: of the music started. By moving this intro to the end of the song, the overall feel of the music changed from a ballroom dance theme to the small rural town theme we were looking for.

Ah, crap, he mentioned the soundtrack. I wonder if I can find that somewhere. Or if some generous reader happens to know about it, I do have plat, as well as Steam...

Before we gain knowledge, there's other knowledge to be obtained!

:destroying it like the literature said he would. The cutscene would take place in an insane asylum, but Bill rightly pointed out that our world had no asylum map in and it was too late to put one in. In the end, we decided to scrap the idea.

Yeah, I'm not listening to this.

But I'll keep this in mind for later.

And that's the only bit of non-tutorial dialog in the place. The other stuff is about regaining MP and other bits about the gameplay, which you either already know or I've explained.

:tinfoil:

Inns function the same way as they did in the previous game. In hindsight, I should have gotten a shot of what the guy behind the counter has to say.

What kind of madman would want a creature made of belts!?

Oh, yep, that'll cover that question.

Maybe a horror or two.

Is this the available bed space of this place?

Well, I certainly hope it isn't.

:3:

If that's the girl's room, then this must be the owner's bed. Where the hell do the guests stay?

Oh, hell, they don't pay me enough to ask these questions. That not I'll stop asking them, since I almost feel honor-bound, considering I only LP RPGs (and half of Yoshi's Island).

Are you blind? We're clearly--

Is this schtick tired yet? Because I love these jokes, I really do.

While I ponder if someone is considering shooting me for making those same tired jokes.

Off to adventure!

Plenty of new monsters this update.

Starting with these Cobras!

There's no shot of them Insane at the moment, but there will be later on in this update.

I don't believe they can Poison you, as I never saw it, but it's still possible.

In either case, they're easily dispatched with regular physicals; anything more than that in basically overkill.

Well, now, this is a horror show in action.

With hair like that, you bet it is.

I can definitely believe that.

I can't imagine the Punk needed much of a push to get there.

Whoops. I was just trying to neutralize her, not completely waste her.

Ouch. The Molly Dolly isn't much tougher than this, so this fight isn't a big deal.

And that's pretty much that.

Alright, now, we have a dog to go rescue. We're going to go in here, kick some rear end, and get that good boy outta here and back to his master.

We've no time to waste, people. Time to cowboy up. :clint:

Hell yes.

It's not long before we get into a fight.

Ugh, goddamned Bats.

And they're juuuust strong enough that Umi can't one-shot them with Flood.

Being Bats, they're also faster than our party, which shouldn't surprise anyone.

They don't stand a chance against Cthulhu.

To properly show you their Insane sprite, I had to let Umi Stun one of them.

NOt sure why I didn't do that with the Molly Dolly from earlier, but eh, whatever.

Alright, so, this cave isn't very big. It's kind of circular, where it's easy to get turned around and wind up back at the beginning, though.

Which I may have done while I was exploring in here, but nobody will know for sure.

A Swordsman? Hell, I bet Cthulhu is better.

...Perhaps not.

I seriously love all the different Insane sprites; they're just so well done, it's kind of a treat getting to see them.

Keep in mind, though, that the Swordsmen do not gently caress around. Umi actually went down in this fight.

However, with the full HP at the end of battle, that's not really a concern.

This is the most obvious loop in the place, but some of the others look like they're leading down a different path, to some treasure perhaps.

Well, hey, that was easy enough.

: optional treasure hunts.

Easy peasy, lemon squeezy.

Bah, of course it wasn't that simple.

Hrm. It digs up some bones, so you reduce it to bones. I...I don't think it's fair to do that.

And we're fighting Ninjas now. Fantastic.

Oh, Ghost Ninjas. This is much better.

Well, he's got some strong attacks, but we don't have many options right now, outside of slugging it out.

If I could have Blinded him, the fight would have been over then, with the Ninja Spirit just needing the sense to (re)die.

We've got more than enough power to drop him, but the issue is getting that done before he does us in.

Especially if he wants to spam this attack; we don't have any way to heal both characters at once, and not enough Potions to keep it up indefinitely.

Thankfully, it doesn't come to that, and Cthulhu puts him back to rest.

:sugartits:

I take Nightfall, just so that I can make every enemy Insane at once. I'll be doing that in most fights anyway, since Insane enemies take more damage. Lowering their resistances was tempting, but I'd rather be able to hit the entire enemy party at once with Insanity.

Now, on this one, I took a minute to carefully consider my options.

On the one hand, Umi would have a spell that is, effectively, a Potion in MP form. However, it would break my combo count, which I don't like. The passive that also heals ailments is what I ended up taking, since I'll probably get more use of that, and it doesn't break my count. It's easier to raise the combo count in this game, and I swear, the skills associated with that are stronger than they were in Breath of Death.

Like there was ever any doubt?

Eh, he's probably peeing in the crypt of a fallen king.

But before we can head back to town, there's one more enemy to show off in here.

I honestly can't think of anything to say about this. I mean, it's a big fuckin' spider. What do you want?

Oh, right, you want to see things made crazy.

Due to them being nothing special, this fight doesn't last long. They're in the same weight class as the Punks, roughly, which makes them not much of a threat.

Oh, and my promise of showing Insane Cobras?

Fulfilled!

Okay, back to town.

Oh, good, Shane did return home.

Too bad that all of our trips into bonus dungeons weren't trying to find Shane and rescue him from whatever pissed off creature there is in there.

For some reason, I don't doubt that Umi can speak Dog.

I bet she has a bit of a Dachshund accent, though.

I like the sound of that.

Ugh, if only I could swap the Magic and Strength bonuses, I'd be absolutely crazy about this sword. As it stands, I'm not building a Magic Cthulhu, so this isn't all that useful. Or maybe it is, since that Agility boost is pretty mighty.

But I'll leave you to brood on that while we take another break. Next time, we'll go east and see what we can figure out about that Hero's Shrine.

Stay tuned!

I get my fun here. Enjoy!
Leave has already mentioned the history of Miskatonic somewhat. It's an Ivy League university specializing in the paranormal that appears in a lot of Lovecraft's writings, most prominently referenced in "Herbert West, Reanimator" and "The Dunwich Horror". Arkham, Massachusetts is the hometown of Miskatonic. The university is referenced in most Cthulhu Mythos adaptation stories and it depends on the writer whether the occult studies that go on there are overt or secret. It's a good location for the game's first town and training area.

Other Lovecraft locations were mentioned this update, but I'll cover their lore when we get there to avoid spoilers.

The innkeepers in this game are generally too scared of Cthulhu to charge you for a room, if I recall correctly. Hope Leave remembers to get a screenshot next time. Also still eager for the chat dialogue screens.

Hooray, we can open chests in houses this game! Oh, and Leave, check every bookshelf and dresser for bonus dialogue. There's many funny bits you're missing. Sadly my memory's fuzzy on most of them. I'll look back at my game and relive the experience one of these days...

drat, those insane Molly Dollys are creepy! I liked the ninja ghost too.

Can't recall if there's any good treasure in the Ninja Burial Ground (that's the name of the bonus dungeon btw. Beltman is in there though- you missed him. I think he's also in the Hero Shrine, so we can see him there.

I stopped playing this game, but have started over to play along with you, Leave!

I took a few different options from you this time.

I chose to take Curse, because while Nightmare made all the enemies insane at once, making them easier to kill, it also makes them hit harder. I was more concerned about losing control of the combat flow due to that, then the benefits of the instant guard-down. Curse, however, will help against targets that are hard to take down, which by later game in random encounters there's always something horribly obnoxious that just won't die.

With Umi, I took Blind instead of Blind Strike, because I wanted to be able to disable dangerous groups and not be stuck doing it one at a time. Pure crowd control decision. She doesn't have a heavy attack as a result, though, and you look like you're getting good mileage out of Blind Strike.

Because change
Personally I went with Umi's full-heal spell here. If things go south in a hurry, I can always have Umi not waste a precious potion and instead prop someone back to their feet like a macabre meat puppet and then full heal their rear end awake with the spell, combo break be damned. Not like combo would matter in a situation like that when you're scrambling to get back on your feet after a big hit.

Would it be possible to have someone use their Combo Boost abilities right before the Full Heal to mitigate the disadvantage of Combo Reset? I imagine that's where Agility might come into play where it's viable to have your healer go last, though some may argue that the healer needs to go first to revive someone before getting whacked herself by a faster enemy, so that's another risk-reward system, assuming I'm not mistaken.

Update Four: A Tower For The Great Old One

Howdy, folks, and welcome back! Last time, on Cthulhu Saves The World, we hit the town of Miskatonia and rescued Shane, a boy's lost dog. Today, we're going to climb to the top of the Hero's Shrine in an attempt to become a true hero, so let's get crazy.

South of the town is this broken bridge, so that's not the way to the Shrine.

Instead, it's basically just east.

I suppose the challenge lies within getting through the shrine, not just to the shrine.

:c00l:

This is the Chat option for this area. It's also the only time I used Chat in here.

Since I don't feel like looking it all up, whoever can list all the references will win a prize.

The prize will be me editing you into the update, propelling you that much closer to internet stardom.

Will o' Wisps have pretty good physical defense, but magic will damage them normally.

Ghost Knights just have a lot of HP and do a bit of damage with their attacks.

I honestly wasn't sure how you would show that a Will o' Wisp has lost its goddamned mind, but I suppose that's a good way to show it.

They also have a skill to cut someone's Agility in half.

While Ghost Knights will just try and cut you to ribbons.

We drown the spirit balls and not question how that actually works.

Heading to the right would have nabbed me an easy treasure chest, but I went to the left and followed the carpet.

One nice thing about this dungeon is that it is fairly sizable, but without being a maze. It's just large.

You're not going to get lost wandering around; you always know the path you took and can follow it back.

I'd much rather go through a large, cavernous dungeon than a large labyrinth.

Necro Guard sounds like something that belongs in Warhammer 40k.

Unsurprisingly, Necro Guards do little more than hit you really hard. They have an attack called Wild Swing, which is just a harder hit.

Fairly profitable for a fight that isn't too difficult. It's one of those where if you make every enemy Insane, you'll probably get your rear end beat in short order.

Curse would be good, just to make individual targets insane, but I can already do that with Insane Strike, as well as start the process of killing it.

This almost looks like it was full of water at one point. I know it wasn't, but I can kind of see it.

Well, hey, four new enemies here.

It's just so cute!

Gandalf the Purple over here is not cute, as he is a wizard, and wizards are dicks.

And now this game has made me sad. I miss Gargoyles. :sigh:

When Wizards go batshit, they are easily startled, but they will soon be back, and in greater numbers.

Gargoyles do good damage, just as you'd expect a stone monster would.

Man, that heart now scares the poo poo out of me.

And down the staircase we go.

Man, they were real proud of that walking under bridges thing.

One detail I like, that I was fond of in the last game, was how you can see the character's weapons when they're running around. It's an utterly minor thing, but it's something they didn't have to do.

That's the way to the next floor, but we're not done exploring this floor just yet.

So let's scoot around.

I could see these areas being filled with water; it looks like these areas could have been drained, giving you access to more dungeons.

Or maybe I've just LP'd too many RPGs and can't help but look for things like that.

Truthfully, if I did LP something else, it'd have to be something a little different. I tried Yoshi's Island, but I found the pressure of having to 100% a level, all the time, was just too much for me. It was more of a pain than it was worth, and I stopped having fun with it real quick.

But I'd like to try something else in VLP format. But I'm not sure what I'd like to try.

When I do my occasional stream, I have a lot more fun with that, just because nobody is expecting it to be perfect. I'm there to have fun with it, just like the other goofs I bring along.

Maybe one of these days, I'll fire up the capture card and a console, see what I can figure out.

Oh, good, a level up is coming. I was out of things to say on that little spiel.

Hmm, yes, both important things.

But this is a touch more important for what I'm doing with Cthulhu.

This game features level ups that are either pure stat boosts or HP/MP boosts. As before, I'll be taking the stat boosts, since I think those will be more important in the long run.

Back at the beginning, we finally head right.

Had I come here to begin with, then this update would have flowed a bit smoother.

And I would have had an extra 250 Gold to...Have, since I'm not spending it on anything here.

With that done, let's move to the second floor.

Well, that's a big friggin'--

What the hell, Cthulhu? When did you get Superman's X-Ray vision?

Eh, I'll accept being able to see through walls as a function of coolness.

Those statues are pretty fuckin' metal.

Alright, almost the last new enemy of the dungeon.

They're tough assholes, but nothin' we can't handle.

This softens them up, but also makes them hit much harder.

That combined with this ability can make them pretty dangerous.

Especially when you factor in the extra 10% strength they get after each round; Lion Statues can seriously gently caress your poo poo up if you aren't diligent in taking them out.

Blinding them helps a lot, but only if you get the Blind to stick. Sometimes it takes a few hits to get it to stick, and by that time, they're dead.

And since Blind Strike has a pretty good attack power, I recommend taking it over Blind. However, Kacie listed some solid logic in taking Blind over Blind Strike.

Kacie posted:

Being able to lock down entire groups would be handy, but at this stage of the game, where I don't have a ton of party members or super powerful attacks, I'd like to have another solid attack around, just in case I need it.

Some others have been posting what they took for levels, since I've apparently inspired one or two other people to play along, and I want to say, I really like people explaining why they took what they did. Not everyone is going to play this as I do, and I like seeing what others think on certain skills and why they felt that choice was better than this choice.

Once again, I take the wrong path to treasure and head through the bottom bridge.

We cross another bridge and go past another coffin.

I'm not sure what these columns are doing set up like this, but we can walk between them.

But I still took the long way around, just in case. And because that increases my chances of a fight, which means more EXP for me.

Are you ready for a legendary enemy to appear? A foe with such grace and strength, it's a treat to see them in combat.

Prepare yourself for the glory of

BELTMAN

I have no idea why he has a neon red cowboy hat, but I'm not about to question a motherfucker wearing a costume of belts.

And I know you're all eager to see what his Insane form is, so here you go.

Oh, yeah, Wizards have spells. I probably should mention these things before making lovely Star Wars jokes.

The Beltman's attacks aren't impressive right now, especially considering he's Insane, but he has one move to make him dangerous.

Yeah, if you let him go long enough, this combined with the Insanity and extra 10% per turn, Beltman can quickly become someone who will loving ruin your poo poo.

Like so! That's a scary amount of damage.

But the rewards are juicy. Beltman might have a lot of power, but he can be Blinded and Flame Strike is pretty strong for this point in the game.

Alright, we want to end up there. But how the hell do we do that?

Well, I'm sure combat will help me figure that out.

:orks:

This is before the Insanity boost. Orcs are another enemy that can get dangerous if they're not taken out quickly.

That staircase we passed earlier, the one that led to the lower parts of this area, is where we want to go. We basically just made a big loop, but now we can snag that treasure.

: automatically once you discover it.

This is a good way to do things. I understand the hoarder mentality when it comes to keeping stat boosting items.

Now then, back to these steps.

Well, not quite at this moment.

Umi, you go girl! :toot:

Oh, drat, her two most important stats.

But this is also important; without enough MP, Umi can't use those spells to wreak havoc like you want your mage to. With that said, Umi still gains a good bit of MP per level, so I take the Magic and Agility boost. The MP boost would have been good, too, but I like knowing my mage is fast enough to start things in a round, especially if I need a quick heal or to try and obliterate something off the face of the planet.

Heading the other way leads us where we can't go just yet.

As we don't have that big-rear end gate open.

Surely you didn't think Cthulhu's level was far behind Umi's.

Three hits? Noice.

Oh, that whole group thing. I don't really like that, and I don't like the one hit, either. So I take the random hits, as there's three of them and for a good amount of damage.

Ooh, a save point. We're close to the end here.

This is near the point where I finished off the set encounters for the area, so I got to wander freely. That is one nice thing about these games. If you both doing most, or all, of the encounters in an area, you're practically guaranteed to be as strong as you need to be.

If you find a save point to hang out at, grinding is super easy in this game.

Are these heroes that died in the shrine, or are they heroes who died elsewhere, and are just entombed here?

Probably the latter, but this is the same world where Cthulhu can become a true hero, so I'm not going to count anything out.

And there, ladies and gentlemen, is our switch.

He's right, y'know. I'm not sure if I could have thought this up.

On the way back, there's a path leading to a chest.

I take the hit to Magic and Agility and trade up the extra Strength and Vitality.

With the gate out of the way, we can continue on ahead.

Winding through the path, we're presented with a choice; we head left, because there's treasure over that way.

And what a magnificent piece of treasure it is!

That boost to Water/Ice means I might never take it off. Seriously, that's such a good modifier, it's not even funny.

We now go the right path, which leads to the top of the shrine.

Hitting the save point first, of course. I was basically out of MP at this point.

Alright, we're here, are we heroes now?

Ah, crap, of course there's a test up top. It's just too easy to walk somewhere and just become a hero. Never mind that you got there, you've gotta be tested first.

That question mark can wait until after this boss fight. It's a bit of a spoiler.

Now that is a big-rear end sword.

I dunno, I'm not sure if anyone believes Guts is a true hero.

I love this way of doing a cutscene.

I'm...I'm pretty sure he didn't move, game.

And to be entirely up front with you, I forgot to drive Sharpe Insane.

I beg your forgiveness by covering him in tentacles.

He resisted every attempt to Blind him. As far as I know, he's immune to it, or just has such a low success rate, he may as well be immune.

Feh, 30 damage.

Oh, poo poo, he can hit everyone. But that's pretty much his bag of tricks for this fight.

And so, I finish him in style.

:krakentoot:

For me, this is a no-brainer; Cthulhu gets the extra HP and Vitality.

I actually thought about what Kacie said when they talked about why they took Blind over Blind Strike. But, for two less MP, one hit, and a bunch of damage, Slow Strike seems like the better option. Not that crowd control is a bad thing, but I like having a few different flavors of a "gently caress You" button.

Hey, look, the heroics are the important part.

I think that's important, yeah. And Cthulhu is basically a good guy at this point.

Hello, living weapon!

Also, hello third party member!

Sharpe is a pretty great teammate, no two ways about it.

I'm starting to wonder if it's a bad thing that I often find myself thinking what Cthulhu is saying.

...Cafe? Ugh.

Now just to trek back through--

Oh, right, that's an option now. But before that, let's see what Sharpe can do.

Besides be so close to a level I'm obligated to let him have it before I end up this update. Anywho, Sharpe is another physical powerhouse; he's all about kicking the poo poo out of whatever is in his path. He's also a living sword, so he gets cool points for that.

Yeah, I delayed this just so you could be spoiled a couple of shots later, by the in-battle description.

After saving up, I use our Teleport function to get us back to town.

The list will fill in quite a bit by the end of the game.

We don't even have to walk into town; we're taken directly to the entrance.

But first, about that level for Sharpe...

The entire party having an Agility increase would be awesome, but there's one thing that pushes the self-target version to the spotlight for me; it offers +1 hits, which will stack when Sharpe has a couple of hits added from his regular levels later on. Combine that with some incredible speed and Sharpe will become a lean, mean, wrecking machine, slicing fools to shreds before they know what even hit them.

With that, I'm putting an end to this update. Next time, we'll hit that cafe and get a move on to our next heroic deed.

Stay tuned!

I don't really agree with the decision of having the stat boost items trigger immediately. Seeing as how they affect the entire party, unless they work retroactively, it looks like it would end up being more useful to just leave them until you have your whole party, thus encouraging boring backtracking even if not by design. Hell, you get this Hero Badge then you get a new party member soon after, so wouldn't it be better to wait a bit so Sharpe gets the boost too?

Note: I might just be obsessed with big numbers.

Not as strong as you'd expect.

Since I don't feel like looking it all up, whoever can list all the references will win a prize.

Dash the Daring=Dirk the Daring, Dragon's Lair, probably.
FistMcStrongPunch=Reference from that one MST3K episode, Space Mutiny. A bunch of names like that, because the main character was never named till the credits. In this case 'BigMcLargeHuge'
Alma The Younger: Uncertain. My first instinct is Finial Fantasy Tactics, but that doesn't make sense, because despite her purity and goodness(Her Job Class is Cleric and all her skills are defensive), she ended up captured and used to awaken the last boss 'Altima'.
Magellan: Uncertain, exactly. In the real world, he was a renowned explorer, and his name is attached to a constellation he saw on his fateful trip. This ties to 'many heroes have star names'. Which could easily lead one to the New Gods and 'Orion'. Which is a loving REACH.
Hero: No reference.
Rescuemanboy: Uncertain. Could be a riff on Superman, could simply be a riff on superhero names being that simplistic.

That was Dash the Daring that we kicked the poo poo out of. Even though he was just called "Hero" during that battle...

Probably right, but I have some thoughts:
Hero: The usual name of the main characters of the Dragon Quest games.
Alma The Younger: The only reference that springs to mind is one character in the Book of Mormon.
FistMcStrongPunch: Call me crazy, but it may be a reference to Saitama, the main character in the manga One Punch-Man, a superpowerful hero-for-hobby who ends most matches in a single punch.
Dash the Daring: Checked a bit online for this one, and the only thing I found it may be related is one episode of My Little Pony called "Daring do", which it seems to involve some kind of explorer/hero and one of the main characters, Ranbow Dash, so it could be a pony reference :suicide:

Ding ding ding!
According to Robert Boyd's (of Zeboyd Games) twitter, he is LDS aka Mormon.

Speaking as a (former) Mormon myself, Alma the Younger is a big deal among adolescent Mormon boys. He was (according to the Book of Mormon) a rebellious teen who sees a vision and immediately converts, ends up becoming basically the President/Pope, then resigns his post in order to become a travelling preacher. He ends up being thrown in prison for preaching I guess? And then God makes the prison collapse but Alma and his buddy miraculously survive. Later he argues with a strawman atheist (who secretly believes in God?) and totally owns him or whatever.

Yeah it is probably that. It was my guess when seeing the name.

The reference in question is the pony Rainbow Dash :ranbowdash: reading adventure novels about an Indiana Jones like pony called Daring Do while learning the value of reading. Doesn't knowing that make you happy? :v:

Chatting with Sharpe at a certain point says he still hovers- it just looks like he walks on his blade because he does it so close to the ground. It's also noted that actually walking on his blade would probably dull him. Hmm.

I like Sharpe as a character. I can recall getting many sentient weapons in RPGs, but this is the only time I've seen one join the party as its own character instead of merely a tool of its wielder.

Nah, the timing doesn't match up. This game was released a full year before that episode was a thing

Dash the Daring is the hero Cthulhu beat up at the beginning of the game. Not a pony reference. This game came out well before Daring Do was a thing.

Dash the Daring could be a reference to good old Dirk the Daring of Dragon's Lair fame, but it'd be a super loose reference at best. It's really the only thing I can come up with.

Dash the Daring and Hero are probably both refer to the Hero in the first boss battle. Before the fight the Hero gives his name as Dash the Daring.

What's wrong with My Little Pony? It's a good show!

Never mind, this game is better and more fun. Besides, Cthulhu has yet to be seen on MLP and I doubt even if he was that they'd do him right.

South Park did though. If you haven't seen it, there's an episode where Cartman teams up with Cthulhu and does a My Neighbor Tortoro spoof. It has to be seen to be believed.

Sadly, YouTube seems to have removed the video. :(
