Shira Oka: Second Chances is a Raising Sim for the PC designed to be a homage to games such as Tokimeki Memorial. It was developed by a Californian company called Okashi Studio's which has since disappeared. You play as a high school student who gets sent back in time because he was such a failure in life but fate gave him a second chance. From there, you have to develop your skills, hang out with people and reach graduation without failing everything or being a loner.

Shira Oka is not a good game. I'm going to state that flat out. It gets horribly repetitive, it desperately tries and fails to be Tokimeki Memorial and the production quality isn't very good, particularly the art. But it does have a lot of writing and they do play around the central concept a bit. You can go from a complete failure to the perfect model student and it's pretty drat satisfying. It's a game worth taking a look at, but it's just not fun to play.

Luckily, I have a soft spot for this so I'm willing to bite the bullet.

Like I've mentioned, this game has a ton of gameplay issues. It's not a matter of real difficulty, it's mostly just tedium. I've played through this once before so I have a general idea of the beats of the plot and the game. But there's very little information out there on the net, especially since Okashi's forum went down. Now all my info comes from TvTropes, a V0.15 guide on GameFaqs and the Wayback Machine's records of the forums. There is a huge amount of stuff in this game and I've likely never seen some of it before. I'll try to filter out the tedium, so don't worry too much. I'll go for as many routes as I can before I burn out. If I finish the game, it'll be a drat miracle.

If you want to talk spoilers, do it in spoiler tags. The endings just wouldn't be as much fun if they didn't come out of nowhere.

Oh yeah, credit to vibratingsheep for LP'ing the Tokimeki series and the thread for introducing this game to me. You can check out his LP's here.

Standard text will be me talking for whatever reason.

Italics will mean the player character's thoughts.

: A mug shot with a colon after it means that it's the character talking.

Right as we boot up the game, we're treated to this opening. I'll leave it to you to make sense of it. Into the game.

When the time came, I didn't even bother applying to university. What was the point?

Sometimes I wonder if things could have turned out differently...

Maybe if I had just tried a little harder in high school...

Studied a bit more...
Or made a few friends...
Anything at all...

Nah. What's the point?

Gratefully collapsing into bed, I sink into a dreamless slumber disrupted only by the morning alarm.

This morning was different, however. I woke up feeling miserable, and it wasn't just the usual hangover.

I called a doctor to make a house call. He said it was just a cold, though the booze couldn't have helped. He calmly assured me that with some medicine and bedrest, I would feel better in a day or two.

But I've never had a cold that was quite like this before... why do I feel so hot?

Demons seemed to haunt, begging at your brain, filtering every thought with fear.

Days seemed to melt into each other, and nights lasted years.

Finally, the heat seemed to subside a bit, until, with a sudden shock of blinding clarity...

And that smell... what is that?

OH. drat... I reek of sweat. How long have I been in bed?

Head is throbbing... and I'm dizzy...
Can barely see...

Huh? It's May second? Are you kidding me?! What is that... Two... no, four days?!

I slept for four days??? That seems impossible even with that crazy fever... Probably just pulled too many pages off the calender...

I thought I tossed them back in high school... Kind of embarrassing...
Good thing no one sees me like this...
My voice is really bothering me...

That's the last thing I need...

And... uh...

Maybe the fever was so bad I died and went to Heaven... but then, why am I still in my room?

Or to herself. She doesn't seem to notice me... I guess I should try to get her attention.

: Come in? I was asleep in my bed.

: Who are you anyway?

: You sound unsure.

: Sorry, it's been such a long time. I had to think for a moment there!

: "Haven't been around someone in a long time?" What have you been doing?

: What do I need an agent for?

Heh, too late for that...

: Besides, I had to shoo away a couple d-

: Demons? I swore I saw demons while I was asleep.

: Demons? Teehee, of course not! Silly, why would you think that? I was going to say...um.

: Dust bunnies. It's a little dirty in here.

You'd think she would give someone a break when they've been sick in bed for days.

: I sure am. An angel wouldn't ever lie or deceive anybody, you know.

: I guess that's true.

: And speaking of honesty. You smell icky.

: Hey, I was in bed for four days. I probably do.

: Oh. That's true, I suppose. As long as you're going to fix it. And shave your beard. Boys your age shouldn't have beards!

"Boys my age"? I'm twenty.

: Alright, fine... so, you worked in the library?

: Sorry to hear you got switched, then.

: Heh, switched... or fired...

: Fired? You can get fired from a library?

: If you're clumsy enough...

: I see...

: I don't know what was wrong, they just seemed to fall down as fast as I could put them up! I guess they figured I'd do less damage as an agent, heehee!

: Great...

: Er, you haven't done anything yet...

: ...Hahaha! That's right! We're just starting out on this adventure! And I'm here to guide you every step of the way!

: Great.

: Yup! First off, let's take a look at what you're "made of".

I'm going to co opt this here for the most part. We're going into the first part of character creation.

We need a name. Don't know about any filters, so I'm just gonna say keep it safe.

She's totally going to buy us a birthday gift! :v:

Birthday will affect star sign which will minorly affect the sliders we'll see in a bit.

Blood types affect your compatibility with people. It's probably a minor effect since most people on the forums used to just ignore it. If you don't feel like picking one, I'll just get Satsuko to pick it for us.

These four attributes affect how the rest of your stats develop. Sometimes they come into play for events. There's one rather notable event that is very difficult to do until your fitness goes up.

2 points for the first point, 4 for the second, etc.

Sliders determine how specialised you are. If your slider is put towards strength, you'll have more strength than someone with a balanced slider and equivalent fitness but they'll be faster. Sliders just make things more confusing. Star sign might influence it but if not, they're going to stay in the middle. These affects events.

That would be the case if I didn't have access to Shira Oka's forums through the wayback machine. From the forums:

Lazy (0 stars): No ambition. Your character doesn’t like to follow things through.
Determined (1 star):  Does his best to get things done, doesn’t necessarily finish.
Ambitious (2 stars): Gets things done and done well.

Tip: Improving this quirk helps unlock more dialogue options.

Jinxed (0): Very unlucky. Fails more days than not.
Lucky (1): Luckier. Better chance at passing classes.
Charmed (2): Passes classes at a much higher level.

Tip: Improving this quirk helps you get good activity results easier, and also unlocks some dialogue options.

Scatterbrained (0): No attention span.
Attentive (1): Better attention span.
Focused (2): Nothing can distract you now! Helps you remember stuff both in and out of classes.

Tip: This helps unlock more dialogue, as well as slow down the panic timer. Filling this completely turns off the timer.

Amnesic (0): No memory. Who are you again?
Forgetful (1): You remember a little more, but not a lot.
Encyclopaedic (2): You remember everything just a few times after you come across it.

Tip: Improving this quirk unlocks more XP and dialogue choices, since you’re able to recall more and more of what characters tell you.

...I don't remember a panic timer at all. Oh well. And yes, we do start off as a lazy, jinxed, scatterbrained amnesic. Rough life.

I got a little bored when I was getting these images.

: So... what do we do now?

: It's all up to you!

: I suppose you're right. I'll just leave these with you, then. I'm sure you can figure out how to use these on your own.

The thing up the top is the important thing. Left box is the calendar date with the day of the week. The 6 bars in the middle box show our proficiency in these stats on a 100 point scale. The two bars on the right represent our physical and mental exhaustion, on the left and the right respectively.

And uh...

Best buddies.

So we need a name, date of birth, blood type. We also have 20 points to allocate between our 4 stats and 4 quirks.

The formula for points needed for the next level is (current level *2). For quirks, they have preset values. Points needed are listed in brackets next to the quirk.

Lazy > Determined (10) > Ambitious (12)
Jinxed > Lucky (8) > Charmed (15)
Scatterbrained > Attentive (8) > Focused (12)
Amnesic > Forgetful (12) > Encylopaedic (20)

Bold your entries and don't worry too much about this. We'll end up shoring our weaknesses and we'll grab all the quirks before we can get the golden ending.

Well, we've got two votes for Goon Lorde and I like the name so we'll go with it. Goon Lorde, born on May 23rd, blood type AB and we're investing in Charm with the Forgetful trait.

And yes, Okashi Studio's was founded in San Francisco in 2005. They're now defunct and their website isn't even functional. Shira Oka's website is falling apart and potentially not safe.

I never realised that Gemini's were also born in May. I'm May 17 and I'm a Taurus.

Combine this with the stuff from being a Gemini and we're a disciplined, complex, manipulative but ultimately kind individual. Don't think this is going to affect us much, but it's neat to look at.

6 points on Charm, 12 points on Forgetful. 2 points left, we'll talk about that later.

Our in-game stats have changed because of our increased charm. We're down half a level in Lit, a level and a half in Science, a little bit down in Art but we got 3 levels of fashion and 6 levels in popularity. Certainly a change.

We're still exhausted, physically and mentally so we rest. It's also the only option we have currently that can take up time.

We sleep in for four days (whoa) before our first event triggers. Events always replace whatever activity you were doing that day.

I probably should get out of here for a while to clear my head.

Game: You quickly dress in some clean clothes and head outside, wandering through town.

Greenery Day is basically a day to enjoy nature in Golden Week.

...And all of Golden Week, what a letdown. Oh well. I guess I could celebrate Greenery Day a day late.

Maybe I should go to the woods and check out the trees or something...maybe get some flower seeds to plant in front of the house.

Who is that...?

: Me?

: Sorry, have we met?

Shira Oka is a bit inconsistent about name order. Sometimes it uses Japanese name order like here, but I recall it using Western order somewhere.

: Heh, I guess you WERE pretty sick that day. You even left your phone on the counter in the nurse's office. If your parents are anything like mine, they'd kill you if they found out you lost it. Anyway, here's your phone back.

That ain't normal.

Uh...

: ...Thanks. How did you end up with it, anyway?

: Heehee, I grabbed it on my way out after taking you to the sick room. And you should be grateful that I did. You never know who could've made off with it.

: Ah, thanks...

: Man, you must really be weak or something, Missing THREE AND A HALF whole weeks of school? And you practically passed out a ton of times while I was helping you to the nurse's station! Maybe you should start hitting up the gym to build your stamina or something...

: I'll keep that in mind...

Add weak to our list of negative character traits, if you want.

: You must be so behind, too! What a bad time to be out of school... you probably don't know anyone!

: That's true...

: I'm glad to see you're alive though.
: Uh, thanks...

: Which means you can take this awesome quiz I found in a magazine.

: What magazine is that?

: "Teen Sci-Fi Princess Weekly", of course.

: Oh...

Not my usual fare either. Here we get dumped 5 questions. I'd love to give you guys a shot at this quiz but I'd also like to get to the rest of the characters. I can let you choose later. Here, I just chose some answers.

: Okay, thanks for the info!

: So what does it mean?

: What does what mean?

: This quiz. What were my results?

: Oh, it looks like I lost that page... Argh, I bet my little sister tore it out. She's always doing stupid stuff like that.

This quiz determines what events will trigger so you can meet the rest of the cast. I don't know what each answer results in but we can keep a record as we go through this.

: Sorry to hear that...

: Heh...

: So I guess I'm pretty much your first friend, huh?

: Yeah, it seems like it...

: So as your first and best friend, I'll introduce you to some other people so you won't have to hang on me all the time.

This unlocks the shopping district as a date location. But I'm not sure if we've unlocked the ability to go on a date yet.

: Wow, great. I'd really appreciate that.

: Blech, but not right now! I have to be running home. We're going to the beach as a family.

: Oh, alright.

: I gotta get running. My family will kill me if I'm late! You just took up a ton of my time, Lorde. I don't want another of dad's lectures on the importance of being "frugal with my time".

: Oh, I see.

: Make sure, you're rested for school on Monday! I don't want to drag you to the nurse's office again. See you around, Lorde.

From our 4 days of sleeping in and not dong anything, our Science, Fashion and Sports went down. Talking to Aya did make our Popularity go up. Sometimes events can mess with stats.

We sleep over the weekend and then start sleeping in the school week since we can't do anything else yet.

Not a fan of sleeping in class. Sleeping on the weekends feels more efficient. Tuesday triggers a new event for us.

: Oh, okay.

: Ooh, I hope Hiroshi's there! He's so cute...

: Heh, who else is in student council?

Huh, they do typo's just like me. I tend to drop words a lot when writing sentences.

: Let's go see!

Yeah, these two will never get along. I like that this game has characters who are enemies. Feels better than everyone getting along.

: What's that supposed to mean?

: I wanted to introduce you guys to the new guy.

: New guy, huh?

: Hello, nice to meet you two.

I'd be dropping more comments about these characters but I wanted you guys to make your own opinions first.

: Hiroshi, Alice, this is Lorde Goon.

: Hi, Lorde! Welcome to Shira Oka!

: Whatever...

...

: Lorde, I know just how it feels to be new at a place where everyone else already knows one another.

This gets us the "Chat" option. It raises Popularity mostly but it does help a bit with Fashion and Lit.

: Thank you, I'll keep that in mind.

Hiroshi assesses us for a bit.

: Hmm, not bad...

: Er...what's not bad?

senpai has noticed us

In case it hasn't come up, Hiroshi's in the year above us.

This gives us "Groom". It lets us increase our Fashion a lot, with a bit of a boost to Popularity and Art,

: Uh... thanks?

: Ugh, you're so full of yourself, Hiroshi. It makes me sick to my stomach.

: Yeah? Well you make me sick to my stomach when you eat that weird greasy stuff.

: What grosses you out about chili cheese fries?!

: You're going to get fat if you keep eating that.

:YOU'D BETTER SHUT IT RIGHT NOW-

: Heh... so Alice and Hiroshi are on student council...

: They must get a lot done...

: Do you guys have any ideas for the year yet?

: Well, we were just kicking around ideas for the school festival.

: What was it?

It's quite unconventional.

...I admit, I'm kind of curious as to what it would look like.

: Did you have a better idea, Alice?

: It's cultural and fun!

: Yeah, that sounds boring. Hiroshi's idea was way better.

: Grr, just stay out of this, Aya! Ugh!

I'm going to try and stay nice and neutral for this first run. For the most part.

: Hmm...something like a Halloween festival?

: Halloween?

: It's a day of the year when kids dress up in costumes and go door to door collecting candy!

: What does that have to do with spirits?

: Hmm, well no one knows for sure when or where it started, but it originally had something to do with chasing away evil spirits.

: Hmm, it could be interesting. We'll think about it.

: Yeah, it has a lot of potential. Nothing's better than costumes and candy!

: Yeah, nice to meet you Lorde!

Another date spot. This one's pretty good too. It goes well with a surprising amount of people.

: Well, bye for now.

We sleep for the rest of the week with nothing coming up. Then on the weekend, we decide to chat for a bit.

Well, we are Mr. Popular...

Then for next week, we decide to groom ourselves a bit. This involves putting on a clean uniform. For now. We trigger an event on Tuesday.

: Hmm?

: Come over here for a sec!

: Oh, hello.

: Kiku, this is Lorde Goon. He's the kid who missed the first three and a half weeks of school!

We have a very impressive reputation.

: Uh, yeah...that seems to be going around...

: Good to see that you are in good health, though.

: I was just telling Kiku about this awesome new book I just read.

: It's still a book! Just because the stories are told using pictures doesn't mean it's not a book, or any less of a good book.

: Whatever...

: Well how do you feel about it, Lorde?

: Uh... I don't know...

If you asked me this in real life, I'd say yes but I'd also say that's because they can both be utter garbage.

Kiku took a step back from Aya when she mentioned the name of the book. Smart move.

: Nope, can't say that I have...

: It's all about this beautiful alien princess who has to defend the whole galaxy against this evil empire!

: It doesn't really sound like something I would read, normally.

Sounds like trash to me, honestly speaking.

: But she also gets this totally cute robot penguin as her sidekick who helps her kick some bad-guy butt! What is there not to like?!

Robot penguin does sound intriguing but Revengeance already had robot dogs so...

: I wouldn't waste my time on a book like that.

: She's lying! She's read it.

: You LOVED the last manga I made you read, though!

: Well...

: No one can resist a good love story!

: And plus, there's pictures so it's even better! You can see the looks on their faces and all...

: ...

: I'll have to check it out sometime.

: Thanks, I will!

: Is that the excuse you tell your parents when they ask why you bomb a test every time a new manga comes out?

: Ugh, you're so annoying sometimes!

: Thanks for the advice, Kiku. I'll try not to get addicted.

: Come on Aya, let us go get ready for class.

: Get ready for class? Who does that?

: People who want to pass make sure they at least have the right books.

I always carried all my books for the day with me. Is that unusual?

: Ugh, you really are a drag sometimes.

We get Study Lit from this. This increases Lit a lot and Science a bit.

: See ya later, Lorde!

That's Kiku's introduction. We do some grooming on Wednesday and Thursday triggers another event.

: I wonder what all the fuss is about...

: Someone hurt you, didn't they? Who was it? Hey! Hey, you1 Was it you?

: Who, me?

: Lorde, did you do something to hurt my sister Rena?

Are normal siblings this close? My sister and I never really paid much attention to each other.

I haven't mentioned this but some of these lines are voice-acted. It's rather unremarkable since most of them have been rather bland but Rena's is OW

: What's going on...?

I just didn't feel typing that all up.

: No!

What a choice...

: Anyway, let me just make one thing clear, Lorde.

: Er, don't worry. I won't hurt her.

: Whatever is going on, Rena, I'll get to the bottom of it. You can't keep secrets from me.

: It's okay, I understand.

: Yes. It's nice to meet you, Rena.

: He just barged over here and started asking me questions! He wouldn't even let me explain!

: Why were you upset?

: He just assumes that somebody hurt me or something like that...

: I guess he just wants to protect you.

: I know, but he should be a little nicer... Please don't think badly of him.

: Teehee, he is. I wonder if he'll take me to the store after school so I can buy a new tanuki pen...

: I see. Do you want to borrow one of mine until you get another one?

: That's okay, I have a cute bear pen to hold me over in the meantime.

: Okay.

: Ooh, I should get moving. It was nice to meet you, Lorde! I'll see you around!

After that, we still have one day of grooming left for the week.

It turns out to be a critical success. There's four types of outcomes for training. Critical fail, fail, success and critical success. The better you do, the more points you get towards your stats and the less physical and mental stamina it drains.

Anyway, our Sports and Science are falling to pieces but we're still popular.

Next time, we'll be meeting three more people. We've got five more people to meet but if I recall correctly, the last two will take some time to meet, especially on this set of events.

Yeah, that being the panic timer would make sense. Those things disappeared in the end half of my last run.

And with Hiroshi, you don't need to worry about him being into his sister. Shira Oka is inspired by Tokimeki and I seriously doubt Tokimeki would've done that. Maybe some other VN or raising sims, but I never got that feeling from him.

Reminder - the cursor leaves behind sparkles when you move it. Anyway, we start this weekend off by studying lit.

These are the normal success and fail. If we want to keep our lit up, I'm going to be seeing this a fair bit. Fails still give some stats but they give less and they drain you more so.

Actions on the weekend and weekdays have different animations. We're at school now so we're studying in the library. Thursday comes and another event pops up.

New girl is in the middle.

: Something smells good...

: Aww, that's so sweet!

: I'm sure I will! It looks fabulous!

: Hey, Lorde!

: Pretty good, I guess...

: Huh?

: Nothing! Please, keep eating!

: Okay...

: I don't think I have.

: Nice to meet you, too. That really smells good. Did you make it?

: Yes, I did!

: Definitely!

: When did you start cooking?

The other option looks a bit insulting in the sort of "did you make these?" sense.

: That's impressive.

Yep, we'll meet Kazuki eventually. He's not going to be around for a while though.

: He'd forget his head if it wasn't attached.

: He would... but it's alright.

: Oh, thank you! It looks delicious.

: Huh?

: Nothing! Just keep eating!

: Okay...

I like food but cooking is :effort:. Here we unlock Study Art which improves Art a lot and fashion a bit. I use this a lot.

: Yeah, she's not kidding!

: Anyway, please enjoy it!

I never realised how few lines Hiroshi had in this scene. He's usually more of a personality than this.

After the week, our Lit went up by 1, our Math went up by 1, Art went up by 1 and Fashion fell down by 1. Our mental stamina bar went down a lot. That's a big problem with Study Lit and Study Science but we'll have to just suck it up and find something physically exhausting to go with it.

I like the music animations but the art ones are better.

Our poor science stat continues to fall. We'll be able to fix this soonish but Science/Math is a hard stat to raise.

An unexpected streak of luck. A good sign to do more art!

It's, uh, a new style.

Art also raises Sports a bit but it's usually just enough to stop the natural decay. We nap over the weekend and then start the week with more art, but Monday brings us an event.

sparkles (I actually don't have footage without the cursor, whoops)

: What about?

: Swim season's here! It's just about the greatest part of the year! I'm really, truly awesome at swimming.

: Yep! We don't really have many... Or...er, any, sometimes...people to compete against but it's all sorts of fun!

: So you like to swim?

: Oh, I just plain LOVE to swim!

Ah, so Goon didn't join the swim team on his first time through high school.

: It trims the body and makes you get rid of the chub, too!

This is true. Joining the swim club will give you some sort of affection bonus for the listed people.

: I see.

Ouch. This means we've failed a Sports/Fitness check and we can't be on the swim team, proper.

: Towel manager?

: Yeah. The team needs someone to come to the practices and meets to help with the towels and all that boring not-team junk.

Sounds like a real nice gig.

: I see.

I literally copy pasted that line from earlier, mugshot and all.

We can't join any other clubs, we don't have to show up if we don't want to and we get free affection.

: Sure.

: Awesome!

And with that, we get the Towel Manager action. It's uh...

We also grab our first point of XP. Or 21st. You can spend XP to increase your attributes and your traits much like the stuff we did in character creation. You get it by experiencing new events and new outcomes.

Yep, Towel Manager sucks. We did this over the weekend, one success, one fail.

Technically, Towel Manager increases your Sports. However, the potency is garbage. Towel Manager is more of a worthless consolation prize than an actual action. If we'd gotten onto the Swim team, we would have Swimming instead which is very good at increasing Sports. You can get +5 Sports from one good week of swimming.

We go back to Art, triggering an event on Tuesday.

Game: You set your books down and notice a pair of feet sticking out from behind a board.

: Who could that be...?

Game: You move the board slightly, and startle the girl sitting there.

: Oh, sorry!

: Err, I came a little early for class.

: What? Why?

: I'm not sure... I guess my watch is fast or something...

My watch used to be like 4 minutes ahead until a friend figured out how to operate my watch. It was not exactly my proudest moment.

: *sigh*

: I'm Lorde Goon, by the way. And you are...?

: It's nice to meet you.

Game: She shrugs and stares at you expectantly, as if waiting for you to say something else.

: I feel like I've never seen you around before...

: Oh...

: Though, I was out for the first three-and-a-half weeks of school...

She's finally turned around and started paying attention to us.

: You don't know?

: Am I supposed to?

: Oh, sorry... it seems like everyone was talking about it...

: I don't pay much attention to gossip, sorry.

Personally, I love gossip.

: That could be a good policy.

: Gossip spreads hard and fast here, however. It seems most everyone thrives on it.

I thought I'd save myself some transcription effort and just take a few extra photos.

: Oh well, enough about that.

We didn't think. Our best buddy Satsuko is a angel. :v:

: Yes. I had a high fever but it's gone now. I even thought I saw angels.

: Angels? That's a little silly.

: You think so?

: It's not realistic. Then again, you were sick...

: So... why are you over there?

: Sorry, I was just curious...

: Why not read outside? It's nice out.

: It's quiet in here.

: I see. So...what are you reading?

: Oh.

: I guess you're not interested.

: It's interesting, I guess...

: "I guess..."

: Sorry...

Can confirm. Plus, my legal studies class would often give us extra reading to do in the form of case studies. A lot of that stuff was messed up but it was fascinating.

: And that's why I don't think we would have much to talk about. Sorry. They teach a lot of useless crap in high school math and science classes, but a small portion of it is actually useful.

I wonder if the writers were a bit bitter about their own high school classes.

: What really fascinates me are the engineering principles related to architecture. I wish they would cover more of that in high school classes.

: I see...

: I think so. Need a hand?

: No, thanks...

: I'll see you around, then?

That's Kasumi done. We've got one more person to meet this update.

Our Science/Math stat is in shambles so we study.

You can do either Science or Math in the animations. We failed the first thing but succeeded on the next.

It'll take some time, I guess.

That's a critical failure. I like it more than the normal fail!

Could just be a correlation, not causation thing but I feel that being tired reduces your success rate. Because of that, I tend to rest fairly frequently.

We rest a bit, do some more art and on the 27th, we meet a new person.

Too bad there's nobody around...
...
Huh?

Game: Suddenly, there is a girl walking down the hall that you could have sworn wasn't there before.

: Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you.

: Do you know where I can find this classroom?

: I can't find it and I'm going to be late... oh, my name is Lorde Goon, by the way.

: I hope I'm not bothering you. I just saw you walking here so I figured I would ask.

: Oh, it is... not a bother at all. I think... you could not find the classroom because the number is smudged.

: Yes, it's a little difficult to read.

: I can take you there... if you would like.

: Thank you. That would be great!

: Okay.

: ...

: I would like to hear what you think...

: Oh, are you a member?

: Did you not know that already...? Anyway... I have just joined. The school... wanted to turn the lot into... another building... The horticultural club saved it... and now it is a garden...

: Interesting. I'll see if I can drop by for a meeting.

No, we can't actually join the horticulture club even if we hadn't joined the swim team. It's a pity, since I do like flowers.

: Sure, I'll try to fit it into my schedule.

: Yes, I feel proud to be...a part of the club. Such beautiful flowers... we make ikebana frequently.

: I can imagine...

: There are also a couple of sports clubs that seem to be popular...

Working out increases your Sports. It also recovers some of your mental stamina but it's expensive in regards to physical stamina. It works really well with studying lit or science.

: I am afraid I do not know what else is offered. Sorry.

: Oh, that's okay.

: Well, here we are. Thank you for talking with me.

: No problm, and thank you for helping me out!

Well, that's Yui. We have two more people to meet. Kazuki and Minion #1 will come a fair bit later if I recall correctly.

Anyway, that's it for now. I should really start studying lit or science and we need to work out.

We also have 3 points of XP to spend. We can get one point of Intelligence, Fitness or Creativity. If there's a majority, I'll take that, if not, I'll just pick a random thing to level.

Mysticblade
Oct 22, 2012

Looks like we'll take a point of Intelligence. I also remembered to change the opening YT link into a polsy link and I'll have to remember to do that for future videos.

Mysticblade
Oct 22, 2012

First up, we grab that sweet, sweet point of Intelligence. While it's too late to give us a starting bonus, we still get an increased rate of growth for Lit and Science.

That's good because exams are on next week and our Science/Lit are garbage.

We spend our weekend studying Math (integration by the looks of it) and then we sleep for the actual week.

Going into a test while tired is pretty bad. Your grades will drop by 1 grade depending on how tired you are.

If you're physically tired, then your Sports grade will go down a grade. If you're mentally tired, your Lit, Science and Art go down 1 grade. If I go into a test tired, I will reload and redo the week so I'm not tired. It's a rather bad malus.

The test goes on, nothing eventful happens. We don't have to answer any questions, it's just a stat check like the Tokimeki tests. No immediate feedback but we'll get that next week.

Well, we'll do well in Art, if nothing else... Clicking that wing button under the cursor on the right lets us talk to Satsuko.

Menu's nice and smooth so I frequently check in with Satsuko.

The first option lets you check if anyone likes you or is interested in you,

The second option tells you if the person with the least affection and how you can fix that.

The third option lets you get info about anyone you've met.

No fancy card for that but we can still get some good info. If you guys want to see anyone's opinion of us, just ask. Satsuko's advice here is legit good. She'll tell you things like "be friends with this person so person 2 will like you" or "person 1 hates person 2 so if person 2 likes you, they'll dislike you".

Doesn't matter if you're amazing or not, it's kind of hard to not get this before the first semester break.

: Er... is that okay?

: But it's not great if nobody really likes you either...

: So nobody likes me?

: Well, nobody really thinks anything about you, Goon - nobody really likes or dislikes you.

We're quite mediocre so it'll take a fair bit of effort for people to warm up to us.

: Get out there and start making some friends!

: Alright, alright...

Love and friendship are different things in this game. Friendship can be gotten fairly easily, but for love, you'll need to spend a fair bit of time with that person for an extended period of time. High school will be 3 years so there's plenty of time.

: Really?

: Nope. I mean, nobody really dislikes you, but nobody really likes you, either.

: Try hard and maybe you'll score a date one day.

: I see...

Satsuko's legit helpful, especially when there's so little info out there.

We spend the weekend chatting to people. Or no one on Saturday. On Monday, problems occur.

: Good morning, Satsuko. What's going on?

New outfit so I'll try to show off her new sprites.

: Sure, I guess.

: That's good...

: Yeah...

: ....

: So... why are you dressed like that?

: Well...

: What?

High school? No, classes certainly weren't fun.

: How am I supposed to explain you?

: Well...you can't just pop into school for a day.

: Why not?

: Well, what are people going to think if you're there one day and gone the next?

: Well... We'll think of something! Come on, just let me come with you!

: No.

: Look, not today, okay? Maybe we'll talk about it later.

: Sorry, I'm going to be late for class...

Game: You go to class, but Satsuko does not follow. She waits in the hall for you, and you worry the entire time.

: You look tired...

: Yeah...

: Just a little sleepy still, I guess...

That laugh...no...

: Who's that running around in the hallway?

Oh no, it's-

: Hey, are you new here?

: Yup! goon, why don't you introduce me?

: Oh? You know her, Lorde?

: Er, well...this is my...

: Yeah, this is my cousin Satsuko, from...

: Sweden!

: Yes, from Sweden...

: Haha, you guys don't look related at all!

: Er, well, she IS a distant relative... very, very distant...

: It's nice to meet you!

: Yes, nice to meet you, Satsuko!

: Nice to meet you too!

Friends, eh?

: Er, let's go talk first.

: Come on. Let's go.

: Aww, bye guys!

: Bye!

: Nice meeting you!

Game: You look for other people to introduce Satsuko to, though she knows you are a little annoyed.

: I told you not to come with me today!

: I know...

: *sigh*

: It's alright...

: You just don't understand!

: What about me?

: ...

: Gee, thanks...

: Please, just let me stay for today? I promise, I'll be good! And I'll stay home tomorrow!

: *sigh*

: Please...?

: Alright...

: Yay!

...Mistakes were made.

Ugh... here we go...

Goon has learned to detest Hiroshi this early on. A moment of brilliance.

Game: You find Hiroshi in the cafeteria.

: Huh...?

: Nope, my name's Satsuko!

: I'm Hiroshi. Nice to meet you.

whoops

: You're my distant cousin. You are NOT lost.

: Well, sometimes I feel lost...

: *sigh*

oh ouch

: Hey! Was that a shot at me?

This event triggers regardless of the answers you choose in Aya's quiz. So this does set you up to consider Hiroshi as the "enemy".

: Yes...?

: You don't look like you're transferring here...

She's broken Hiroshi's smug defences. Good job, Satsuko.

: But I can't help but notice...

: What is it?

: You're not wearing a uniform.

: That's because I'm just here on a visit!

: Aww, that's too bad...

: I know!

: Maybe we can go o-

Good job, Goon.

: What? Goon, I-

: Heh, I understand. Later, Satsuko.

Hiroshi's does have his moments where he's not being a terrible person. It's why he has a route.

: No, he's just irritatingly full of himself sometimes.

It sets him up to fall though. There's one character who really enjoys teasing Hiroshi. I like her.

: You and everyone else...

: Oh well... let's go meet everyone else!

: *sigh*

Game: You continue through the cafeteria and find Aya, Naoko, and Kiku in the middle of a conversation.

I was helping out with baking some cookies just before writing up this update, actually.

: Are you sure you aren't full already...?

: Yes, you have already had a lot, Aya...

: Aww, come on! What's one more going to hurt?

: Oh, hello there...

: Hey guys. I want to introduce you to my cousin, Satsuko.

: Oh, hello!

: Nice to meet you.

: Hiya!

: Are you transferring here?

: Nope! I'm just here to check up on Goon! Heehee!

: Oh, how nice of you.

: Where are you from?

: Which one?

: I see...

Sounds like someone doesn't believe in us.

: Oh, that's very interesting. I've always wanted to visit Sweden!

: So I have heard.

: Here, try one of these cookies I just made, Satsuko.

: Aww, I wanted that one!

: You have had enough.

: Yes, mother...

: It's okay, I'll share with Goon! Since he's such a good cousin...

: Oh, thanks!

: Mmm, it's so good!

: Yeah, this is great!

: Would you expect any less from one of Naoko's recipes?

: Absolutely not!

: Aww, you guys flatter me too much!

: Hey, Satsuko...

: Yeah?

: We should get going...

: You're not going to stay the day?

: *sigh* I guess not...

: Likewise! Please come visit again!

: I sure will! Bye!

: Bye!

: Come on.

Game: You and Satsuko continue to wander through the school, though the hallways seem mostly empty.

: Oh!

: Huh?

It's nice that people can communicate in monosyllables. I do it quite frequently.

: Sorry, I bumped into you! I'm so clumsy...

: Excuse me...

: I don't think so...that's Yui, and she seems to be really quiet...

: I see...

: Still, next time you should be more careful.

: Well, thanks for letting me come visit school today, Goon! I had such a great time!

We must prepare for the inevitability of Satsuko coming back to school.

: I'm glad.

: Please let me come back again sometime?

: I'm sure I don't have a choice...

: *sigh*

: Oh, I almost forgot!

We call people out on dates once they warm up to us. We also need their phone numbers and, well, we don't have any.

: I even marked a few places on it for you.

I usually default to the Park for dates but the Cinema is also very good since it has like 6 different genres to watch and the movies do change occasionally.

You've got a random chance of running into people. Different places will give you different people. Yui and Rena like the park, Aya and Hiroshi like the amusement park, etc. If you don't find anyone, you just spend time with Satsuko and it's a wasted day.

: Well, I'll see you at home. Enjoy the rest of your day, Goon!

We're doing some science this week. We'll need to improve our science for the next test.

Can't really expect to deal too well on your first test.

Let's see how I did...

Hmm, better than my first time around. Got flat C's on my first run. Here's a table from a FAQ.

A / B / C / D / F
Freshman
1. 20 / 10 / 00 / ** / **
2. 30 / 20 / 10 / 00 / **
3. 40 / 30 / 20 / 10 / 00
Junior
1. 50 / 40 / 30 / 20 / 10
2. 60 / 50 / 40 / 30 / 20
3. 70 / 60 / 50 / 40 / 30
Senior
1. 80 / 70 / 60 / 50 / 40
2. 90 / 80 / 70 / 60 / 50

In my experience, the earlier grades are a bit harder on you and the later grades are a bit easier. Add 5 to the 1st semester stuff and then change the increase to be +9 per semester.

We can check our past grades. Useful to see if we're failing anything.

: Er, my grades. What are you doing here?

: I bet you aced them all!

: Er...

So does everyone else. Aya sometimes has an event before the first test where she goes "haha, you're going to fail~".

: Gee, thanks.

: Oh, don't be that way. It's just that you've started over, after all.

The first few tests are a bit harder because you have less time to study for them. We missed the first-three and a half weeks of school.

: It's good that you're keeping track of your grades, Goon. I know you can get ahead eventually. Just keep trying at it.

: Alright. But maybe you should be careful. People could see you...

: Just fine! And you?

: Great! Well, we'll see you!

: Uh... I guess they can! I'll have to be careful. Heehee! Anyway... just remember a couple of things.

I linked that rough grade chart before. If our stats are too low, our rate of growth won't be high enough to do well in the later tests. Semester 1 of Year 3 is particularly brutal if I remember right. Lot of events go on at that time.

: What do you mean?

: You will need to keep up with your studies if you want your test results to equal or exceed your previous ones.

Different characters have different stats that they like. The better you are in that stat, the quicker they'll warm up to you. Alice likes Art/Music, Kiku likes Sports, Aya likes Science, etc. I'll talk a bit more about this when we pick a route.

: Just keep all this in mind and you'll do well. I hope you do better on the next test!

Hmm? I was hoping to hold off on this for a bit longer but Satsuko's spoiling it. Oh well.

Yes, you can be sent back multiple times. If you screw up, you can be sent back. If you finish a route, you can be sent back. The four stats we saw in character creation, our XP and any phone numbers we have are retained. I'll talk about the loops in more detail when we trigger it. We're coming to the first thing that can restart this loop soon.

Get 8 F's and Satsuko sends you back in time. This will change as we complete more loops. We can always ask Satsuko to see how we're doing on this front.

: Anyway... now that that's settled.

That looks really weird but it sounds okay when I sound it out.

If you guys want any information on the characters, I can write up a post real quick with some info about them. I'd rather wait until we meet the two last characters but feel free to ask.

Shira Oka doesn't really get weird until we get to the endings. Unfortunately, it's going to be a fair few update until we get to the endings. It's a 20 - 25 hr long burn, but it's a slow burn that sputters out half-way through and then comes back to life at the end.

Art is not this game's strong point. I have some examples. Though, these really are transition frames.

Uh, I was messing around with some technical stuff tonight and I seem to have found a higher quality way to get images. There's been some blur, particularly around text that's been bugging me but I hadn't found a real better way to do it. I finally managed to figure out my issues with VirtualDub mod (i was missing a decoder like an idiot) but the new images are a lot bigger.

This is the one we were using before. This is 55KB.

This is the new capture. It's 340KB.

There's a few ways we could go from here and I wanted to hear what you guy's wanted. My internet's plenty fast and this isn't the day of 56kB dial-up, but...

Options are:

  1. I go back and fix all the images, throwing up the new ones. I was going to do this before I realised we have around 300 images on this page already and at 350ish KB per image, the page would be over 100MB.
  2. I switch to the new stuff once we hit the next page. Hopefully, we won't end up with a similiar glut of images like we have here.
  3. We just move on and ignore this. It's going to bug me a lot, but we can do this.

Mysticblade
Oct 22, 2012

I just checked out some other SSLP's that have large images and it didn't seem too bad to me. I'll switch over to the higher quality photos for any new updates and I'll fix the old ones up at some point.

E - Looking like a moot point. VirtualDub doesn't want to play. Back to the old format!

E2 - AvsPmod works. A friend helped me out, so I can get some decent images. I probably should've done this stuff before, huh?

I took a bit of a look around and the 4 stats we saw in character creation are called Vital Statistics (Intelligence, Fitness, Creativity and Charm). The six up the top are called current statistics. The two stamina bars are actually called stress bars with either a (P) or an (M) so I'll call them physical and mental stamina from now on.

Should be all the terms I need to clarify right now.

We try working out since we've got the phys stam to burn but we fail both days. Still get a point of Sports off it.

: Is that Yui...?

...Yeah, it's Yui...

I wonder what she's doing...

Game: She starts to cross the street.

: Hey, watch out!

Game: You are overwhelmed by a sharp pain, and then...

Game: It is as if time itself has become suspended. You feel nothing, and gradually even your thoughts slip away from you... After what feels like an eternity has passed... your consciousness is brought back into focus by a faraway, familiar voice.

: I think it deserves another chance, don't you...? Yes, another chance...

Game: You seem to exist again, a painful, hot throbbing shooting through every bit of your being...

Again?

This is different from the first time.

Such a strange deja vu...

Game: Demons seemed to haunt, begging at your brain, filtering every thought with fear.

Game: Days seemed to melt into each other, and nights lasted years.

Game: Finally, the heat seemed to subside a bit, until, with a sudden shock of blinding clarity...

We may be forgetful, but we can remember something big like this.

That girl there... she'll turn around and be... Satsuko, that angel.

We've certainly died once now. We don't know if we died from our alcohol induced sickness in the first update though. Bit of a moot point though, it doesn't have any effect.

She's even saying the same thing. Now I'm sure this has been a dream.

Game: You open your eyes, your thoughts suddenly returning to you. You look around, bewildered at what happened.

: What happened...? What day is it?!

Game: You look over to the calendar and see that it's May second again, just as you'd previously thought.

: What? How is that possible?!

: What?!

...

: What do you mean?

: It's a little complicated, though... Basically, I brought you back to when you first met me.

: How is this possible...?

: I can bring you back to this point if something really goes wrong... because I really want you to succeed! It's an ability of mine. I did it once and I can do it again and again, teehee. There are some things you should know, though...

: What?

Not quite. Our current statistics are also reset depending on our vital statistics.

Vital statistics, phone numbers and quirks persist through loops.

The second time you go through an event, you may have more options depending on your memory. Even a forgetful Goon can get a few more options. And more options means more XP.

: So next time you're in a tight pinch, maybe you can make better decisions!

The bus event will happen on July 18, first year, every time. It takes a lot more fitness and sports than we have to get it. At our Fitness, we'd need something like 50 Sports to save her. Not possible. At like 7 Fitness, it'd drop to 20 - 30, which is possible. The Fitness slider also affects this. Better speed means you can get it at a lower fitness. We're in the middle so the slider is a non-issue.

: This will happen to you every time. If things don't go well, I'll have to send you back and we'll end up having you back where you started... every time.

There's a way to make it through the bus event without the Sports/Fitness though. We don't need to grind within the tiny 77 days we have to save Yui without dying.

: Let's see... what else do you need to know... OH! I almost forgot!

: Come talk to me later when you're ready to spend the points you've gained so far.

We've already boosted our Intelligence before. We've got 2 points so we could get a point of Fitness or Creativity. Both are good options.

: Okay.

: Well, we shouldn't stand here talking all day. You have a life to re-live, so get to re-living it! And don't forget to call me if you need me!

There she goes again... I can't believe this is happening.

I would also be terrified of the prospect of infinite high school. We start off on the verge of failing ill and into depression, so we take some rest.

On Friday, we head out due to events.

Game: You quickly dress in some clean clothes and head outside, wandering through town.

Game: A feeling of deja vu washed over you.

Wait, did I want to buy something?

Game: You find yourself inextricably drawn to the shopping district.

Alien-Princess Warrior Fantasies.

This is what I mean by events changing. We're not going all "uh...".

: Hey there, Aya.

Sometimes, we also know things we really shouldn't.

: Um... I'm not sure...

...Luckily, Aya isn't too fussed about this.

: You sure are.

: Well, it's about time you started coming to school again! Three and a half weeks is a long time to be out. You must be SO behind!

Hey, we got a B in one subject.

Aya doesn't care what we say here. Conversation continues like it did last time until we get to another change.

: Sooo... you may know me, but I don't know you.

We have enough confidence now to introduce ourself.

: I bet your magazine there has tips on how to KNOW know me.

: Actually, it does! How did you know?!

: Lucky guess, I suppose.

: Hey, is that the latest issue of "Teen Sci-Fi Princess Weekly"?

...Why would you pick that to remember, of all the things?

: It sure is!

From here, we got to the questions.
  1. Favourite thing to do after school?
    1. Attend a club.
    2. Go to work.
    3. Hang out with friends.
  2. Most important thing about high school?
    1. Getting involved.
    2. Having friends.
    3. Learning all you can.
  3. How would you impress someone?
    1. Make them something.
    2. Do something nice for them.
    3. Just be myself.
  4. What would you like to receive as a gift?
    1. Something useful.
    2. Money.
    3. Something hand-made.
  5. What's the most important thing in life?
    1. Friends and family.
    2. Living how you want to.
    3. Career.

Our selections last time were 1.B, 2.C, 3.C, 4.B, 5.B. The order of the answers is randomised but I'll probably keep using this list. Too much effort to write again. :v:

This affects the order we meet people in and last time it was:
  1. Hiroshi and Alice yelling at each other in a meeting.
  2. Kiku and Aya arguing about books.
  3. Rena being sad about a tanuki pen.
  4. Naoko and food.
  5. Kasumi being... Kasumi.
  6. Yui, and nearly running her over.

You can pick if you want, or I can pick a random set of answers.

Also, Fitness or Creativity? We've got the points for one and only one right now.

Mysticblade

It's not quite a dating sim, but Long Live the Queen is a raising sim with romantic endings and it's all about not dying horribly.

Gonna start recording, and I'll just roll with whatever for the quiz answers. If I don't get started early, I'll never work the motivation to actually write up the update.

Mysticblade

I'd been holding off on showing the save screen since I didn't feel like showing off the cycle part yet. Incidentally, my previous run took 14 cycles to complete. I don't think I got an ending until the 4th cycle. Some people have reported not being able to get an ending until their 9th cycle but that's something easily avoided. We'll have to pick some characters to hang out with soon...

Grabbed a point of Fitness. And drat, May 23th is still bugging me.

For Aya's quiz, we said attending a club is our favourite after school activity, getting involved is important, we'd do something nice to impress someone, we'd like something hand-made and that a career is the most important thing.

Quite a contrast to our first Goon who said his favourite thing was going to work, learning all you can was critical, he'd just be himself to impress someone, he'd like some money and living how you wanted to was most important.

The rest of the conversation with Aya's nothing new. We're going to be seeing a lot of repeated events so I'll skip over content that's been done before.

We've been doing a bit of working out/science work for the first bit until this fires off...

...Yeah, we're getting the exact same chain of events. I know for certain there's an alternate set of events you meet Kiku with Hiroshi and Alice with Yui. At least we can use some foreknowledge here.

: You have a crush on him, right?

: You're blushing.

: As if! You're making stuff up.

: If you say so.

: He's one of the most popular guys in school, and good at everything, that's all. You could probably learn a thing or two from hanging out with him, Lorde.

: I'll keep that in mind...

From here, we return to old territory.

: Hello, you must be Alice.

: This is Lorde Goon.

: What's going on?

: That's how you treat girls, so...

: Hey, not ALL girls. What about me? Hiroshi and I are great friends!

: That's only because you suck up to him!

: Hey, calm down, everyone. So what's on the agenda today for student council?

From here on, it's normal chat until we get to ask about stuff.

: Let me guess... something with showgirls, Hiroshi?

...I still can't get over how this is an option.

: Hmph, you guys are all the same...

: Heh, I can't wait. I hope Naoko will volunteer to be a showgirl...

teenagers.txt

: HEY!

: She's always running off to Karaoke World. How mature.

Kind of like how differently this finishes. We do some Science and Art until we get a new event next week.

You remember this scene?

Goon has a summary. He won't always have it but it's usually pretty easy to remember common events like this. One-time events and rare events that happened like 5 cycles ago? Harder to remember.

This event continues on as normal until we get to the choices.

: Hiroshi, maybe if you calmed down a bit, she'd actually tell you why she's upset.

: Y-yeah, I would...

: Here's your chance to tell your brother what's wrong, Rena. Go ahead!

: Well?

: My favourite pen ran out of ink. That's all!

: WHAT?

:It was a REALLY good pen...

: ...

: Please don't be mad, Hiroshi!

: Hey, Rena, I can lend you a pen if you want...

: It's okay, I think I have a spare one in my bag.

: Oh, okay.

: Anyway, let me just make one thing clear, Lorde. If you even so much as think of hurting a hair on my sister's head, I'll pound you into oblivion.

: Er, don't worry. I won't hurt her.

Bit of a change from Hiroshi being all "YOU CAN'T HIDE THE TRUTH FROM ME". From here on, it's back to normal until we get to the next choice.

: Wha- how did you know?!

: You sure you don't want to borrow one of my pens for now?

: Are you sure? I would be happy to lend you a pen.

: Oh, well...

Game: Rena rummages through her bag.

: Not at all.

: Thanks, Lorde, you're a prince!

: No problem.

That's a bit different as well. We continue to fail at working out and eventually I just start studying Lit. It goes much better.

Naoko's event is the same. We don't have any new options so I'll just skip it. We keep studying Lit.

The week after Naoko's event, we trigger Aya and Kiku's discussion about books.

Skip a bit...

: No way.

Last time we went, "uh...", but this time we're just going "No".

: I didn't say that...

I'd say reading's for nerds but I'm aware of the irony in this context.

: Sure... that could be it.

The last manga I can remember reading and enjoying recently is Chef of Nobunaga. I feel like I'm starting to get too old to enjoy shonen manga anymore.

Definitely not something I'd read without a strong suggestion from a trusted friend. Top option is the one that didn't appear last time.

: Oh, I've heard about that one.

: You have? Isn't it the greatest?!

: It's the one about the alien princess and her robot penguin sidekick defending the universe, right?

That sounds like shoujo. And I don't read much shoujo. The only thing that comes to mind when I read this description is Sailor Moon...

: That's the one!

...Ouch.

: Heehee, you said it! Can't take it back now!

: Well, it wasn't that great, anyway...

: Oh, so you've read it, Kiku?

I had the same thing with a friend and Dota 2 a while back. We've both stopped playing it but I never really got into it. Still got dragged along for like 100 hours...

: Uh-huh, I bet you bawled like a baby when the prince-

: Oh, that's right. Don't want to spoil it!

Clearly this was a teaser for Okashi Studio's next big game. Pity the company died after this game.

Rest of this is all stuff we've seen before.

After that, we continue to read some boring books. We ge 3 critical successes in a row so something's going right. Friday, we meet up with Kasumi again. The scene is the same as last time, until we get up to the options.

: Hello, Kasumi.

Aya didn't call us out on knowing her name, but Kasumi sure is.

: I'm in your class, remember?

: *sigh*

Then we're back to normal.

: You're the quiet type, aren't you?

We had this option last time, we just picked the other option.

: Sometimes... Well, most of the time.

: Nothing wrong with that. I'm socially behind right now myself.

...I had to check to see if that was part of our first conversation. I mean, this would be my 16th cycle of Shira Oka? Regardless, I get mad deja vu when I go through these events again.

: Oh, why?

: I was out sick for the past three-and-a-half weeks. Everyone at school thought I had died.

Conversation goes back to old content here.

: Yes, I'm better now. But you didn't know I was gone?

: No I didn't, but that doesn't surprise me...

: Why not?

: *sigh* It's nothing.

We ask her why she's there, she yells at us and eventually we get here again.

: Hmm, not a bad idea.

: What do you mean?

: It's nice and quiet in here. I can see why you would want to read here.

: Is that a book on architecture?

: Yeah, how did you know?

: It looks familiar.

: Oh, you've read this book before?

: Well, not exactly...

: I see...

Things finish up as normal there.

Next time, we're running into Yui again. After that, we'll approach July 18 again, and we'll see if we can avoid getting run over.

Loading screens exist in Shira Oka but the game is not very heavy. These thing are very rare and I was lucky enough to find one on a failed recording. Accidentally messed with the resolution so I just restarted the recording and went back a save.

Didn't show this off at the end of last update so here we go.

After July 18, I will throw up a vote where we pick who we want to hang out with and thus what kind of character we are. I originally meant for this to just be one single update but Satsuko took up a lot of space. So vote and character summary will go up after next update.

Anyway, we work out a bit...

This scene never really changes. But there's a different scene for the Swim Club in Year 2 and possible Year 3? Like I've said before, I get immense deja vu so it's hard to say what's what.

Studying Lit stops working well for us so I switched to Science.

Critical success is good but we're running out of mental stamina.

A critical success for exercise. Good stuff. June 18, on a Friday, we meet up with Yui again.

Why does this keep happening? Is Satsuko sure I'd retain all my memories?

This is just happening because you're an amnesiac, Goon. We might want to consider saving up for some traits soon.

Ah, active efforts. How nice.

Ah, there she is.

After that, the scene goes on as normal. We ask for directions, Yui's all shy about it but she says yes and the first change is at a decision.

: That's right. You're a member of the horticulture club.

The only change is that Yui doesn't say "Did you not know that already...?". So I guess this is a sort of skip which is very much appreciated. Nothing else changes here.

Oh, did I mention? This game doesn't have a skip function for text we've seen.

After that, we just get some rest, try studying lit again but we mostly do a lot of art.

Time can fly by pretty fast in this game. On our first loop, I accidentally went into the test tired because I didn't realise it was happening. I reloaded but that was kind of embarrassing.

On the weekend, we talk to Satsuko for a bit.

: I want to schedule a day out.

: You can't spend your whole life in your room. You have to put yourself out there so you can see new things, acquire new experiences!

: I know, I know.

: First things first!

That exchange happens every time you want to schedule a date out. Luckily, it's not too long but it can be annoying. Just another small thing that bugs me, I guess.

...Hm, I thought we had a lot more places. Karaoke from Alice, the Park and the Theatre from Satsuko and the Shopping Mall from Aya. Guess we'll unlock the rest later.

Different places have different sub locations to go as well as some people preferring some places more. I got real familiar with the Park and you're more likely to run into Yui, Rena, Kiku and Minion #1 there. I don't think I've ever seen Hiroshi or Aya there.

We pick the Park.

Time also matters but it's not as important. You're more likely to run into others on the weekends and possible holidays. I usually just scheduled stuff for weekends so I'm not too sure on that second part. We're pencilled in for the 16th.

We could totally organise a grand tour of all the dating locations. :v:

Would take a lot of time though.

: No, I'm done.

: Great! I'll write this down on the calendar. I gotta go! Bye!

Wonder what she does when she's not hanging out with us. We haven't started any of the endings yet so I have no clue what she's organising yet.

We do a bit of grooming. Because I remember my first few runs where everyone went "ew, you look like a mess" and we couldn't make any friends. :smith:

This is the Monday after the test. And, well, this has a lot of changes. Which is why the update got split.

: Whatever do you mean, Goon?

: You're all dressed up just like last time and you're giving me that same weird smile. You're going to follow me to school again, right?

: Weeeell...maybe.

Imagine if Goon couldn't even pick this up.

: Why don't we make this easier on the both of us? I'll just let you come with me this around?

: Of course I won't.

No reason to be a sad sack so soon.

: You just want to go to school and make friends just like me, right?

Friends? Well, I guess we have people who don't dislike us.

: That's it exactly! I'm glad you get it. Well, let's be off, then.

: Okay...

This time, we know she's here and we actually have some control over events.

Game: You and Satsuko stumble upon Alice and Rena.

: You mean me?

: Yes, you. You're the only one here we haven't met yet!

That is a lot more control over these girls just randomly finding Satsuko.

: She's my cousin. From Sweden.

I've never taken the second option. But I'm very curious about it.

praise me more

: Wow, you come from Sweden? What's it like there? I hear it gets quite snowy there.

I hear Sweden gets holidays during the summer since they don't get much sun during the rest of the year.

: I'm from a different country too! I'm from America.

: I know, teehee.

: You do?

: Yup! Goon told me about both of you.

: Oh, I see. Well, you don't look much like Lorde.

: I'm a VERY distant cousin.

That's new to this loop as well.

: You bet!

: Come on, Alice. We've got to be going.

: Satsuko. My name's Satsuko!

Satsuko introduced herself at the start last time, but this time Alice and Rena have been fine just knowing that she's our cousin.

: Satsuko? What a pretty name. We'll see you later, Satsuko! Bye, Lorde!

: You were a pleasure to speak with, dear Satsuko. I hope the day keeps you well!

: You too! Bye bye, guys.

: What do you mean?

: Well, I made you sad last time, when I came to school with you.

Well, we're not dragging her off now so...

: Yes, I suppose it went more smoothly this time.

: Oh! Is it time to meet Hiroshi again? I just LOVED seeing him last time...

: Oh... I know you did.

Game: Honoring Satsuko's request, you find Hiroshi in the cafeteria.

That's right...they've already met. She must recognise him. But... doesn't interfering like this change the way the world works or something?

You're looping in time. I don't think your partner hitting on the school jerk is going to ruin things.

: Huh...? Have we met?

Sharp, Hiroshi. She shouldn't know your name yet.

: Ye-

: NO! I mean...no, you've not met Satsuko yet.

\

We have a cover story this time so we're a little less awful about this.

: Distant cousin. Very distant.

Well, she ain't lost this time. We go back to normal with Hiroshi insulting us but Satsuko's response to Hiroshi asking about the clothes is different.

10 and a half hours from Stockholm to Tokyo, 8 and a half from Stockholm to Washington DC. Or at least, that's what this online thing I used said. That's fairly long, I'd say, but from Sydney I have a 20 hour flight to Stockholm.

: I see. Alright. It was great meeting you, Satsuko.

"I hear I'm a genius"...?

: You know it wouldn't have worked out.

: But-

I doubt Satsuko could stop talking for this.

: But he's a genius, didn't you hear? A handsome guy that's SMART too! He's perfect!

: *sigh* Come on. Let's go...

I agree, Goon.

We find Naoko and the others. This conversation goes on as normal until they get around to asking Satsuko where she's from.

She said Switzerland last time. And even I know Switzerland and Sweden aren't close.

Good, she remembered this time.

After this, the conversation basically goes on as normal but without Kiku being all "huh?" in the background. Naoko asks about Sweden.

Satsuko remembers that Sweden is cold so we don't have to tell her that.

: So I have heard.

: Yeah, you should all come visit me in Sweden together. I'll show you around!

There she goes, making promises she can't keep.

I used to want to go to Austria since I had a friend who moved up there. Kind of forgot about that.

Back to cookie chat. There's only one cookie left and Aya ain't getting it.

Key difference here is "again".

: Again?

My, my, she can make things up on her own.

: Running out of rice? Sounds like a poorly planned meal, I must say.

:...

Well, we are a Goon...

: No, thank you. You enjoy it, Satsuko.

: Yes, go ahead. You have to get back to Sweden soon enough.

: Good point. Thanks!

: Like always? But we've never met.

: Er, well, Goon's been telling me about your cooking and baking and stuff. He can't get enough of it!

: Oh...how flattering!

: Hey, Satsuko...

: Yeah?

: We should get going...

: Oh, it's time to meet-

: No, just time to go.

: *sigh* I guess not today either...

: ...Either?

Then the scene finishes up as normal.

Game: You and Satsuko continue through the school, though Satsuko seems to have something on her mind.

Last time we bumped into Yui, it was an accident.

: You look like you're about to tackle someone.

: Teehee, I'm just excited! ...Hmm, where is she..?

Game: ...

: ...!

: Yui, this is my cousin, Satsuko.

: H-hello...

: What's going on, Yui? Wanna talk?

: A...ah...

Pictured: How not to deal with an introvert.

: I...I must be going...

: I don't think people are usually that upfront with her.

: What do you mean?

Nicely put, Goon.

: Oh...

: Don't worry too much about it.

: Yes, I'll see you at home, then.

: Enjoy the rest of your day! See you back at home!

Hmm, that's finally over with.

Anyway, next update will feature our marks, our trip to the park and July 18. Shouldn't be a very long update since it's only like 5 minutes of footage.

Mysticblade

Last time, we finished on a Monday. So we're still working on being fashionable.

This is where we dumped all our points too.

We get our marks back this week too.

Let's see how I did...

Ah, good news. We got a C last time. Unfortunately, we got all C's this time. Last time we pulled a B in Art but C elsewhere.

We also got our grade tracker back. We can't keep track of these across time, sadly.

Just another update on our stats. I'm fairly certain we were at 15 Lit for the test.

This here is the schedule icon for going on a date or a day out. It's a bit hard to get a still of this but it's basically a red heart. Might try making a GIF of it sometime.

Our little avatar also goes from his house to the park.

If you don't find anyone, it's basically a wasted day.

Game: You walk around Kirin Park for a bit, hoping to run into someone you know. After a few hours, you grow bored and realise that nobody you know is here.

: Since the weather is so nice, let's hang out in Kirin Park together!

Well, she did give us a few hours to find someone...

Game: Satsuko grabs your hand and before you know it, you've spend? the afternoon exploring every area of the park together.

Fairly certain that ain't spelt right. Anyway, wasted day, pretty sad. I find that in these early loops when you don't know anyone and you have issues getting people to warm up to you, random dates can help a bit.

Doing this LP has made me remember it's July 18 that has this event. I used to think it was late in May for some reason.

Today is the day that Yui's going to get hit by that bus.

: I should take a shortcut to the road.

If it takes cheating to win, we'll do it.

A shortcut will get me there faster, and then I can make it in time to stop her before the event even happens!

Now...

just who we wanted to see

Oh...

: Where you going? You seem to be in a hurry.

: Oh...I was heading somewhere.

: Well, yes. Obviously.

: Stop reading my mind, it's weird.

What a coincidence...

: Oh, alright. Thank you.

: Great! Glad you're always willing to take my advice, Lorde.

Game: Hiroshi leads you off quickly, certain he knows a faster way.

...Honestly, I do like Hiroshi more than Aya.

: Oh my god! That's so awesome. You're so awesome, Hiroshi!

Man...sure, that path WOULD have been faster...if we didn't run into Aya and he didn't start talking to her.

: Well, that was interesting, but I've got to get going.

: Alright. See you, then.

Great. I'm late now. I wonder where Yui is.

Game: You see Yui across the street. She is walking slowly and seems to be deep in thought.

Game: You begin to hear the sound of the approaching bus, as she begins to cross the street. Knowing what's coming, you start out towards the road. However, Hiroshi grabs your arm.

: Hey Lorde!

Game: You point towards the road. His eyes go wide, seeing the same thing you do.

: Oh, hell!

Game: Without hesitation, you push Hiroshi aside and start running towards her. but instead of pushing her out of the way, you feel a strong arm shove you to the ground.

Game: Hiroshi shoves her from the line of the bus, narrowly missing being hit himself. It clips the back of his uniform, wind fluttering past. The bus driver honks his horn angrily as he speeds by, shouting expletives about crazy kids getting in the way.

: Whew!

Game: He stands by the curb gasping for a moment, trying to catch his breath. When you look up, Yui is nowhere to be seen.

...Yeah, I hate to break this to you guys. But we're going to be using Hiroshi to save Yui until we get good enough to save her from the bus ourselves.

Game: A crowd is gathered, pointing and talking quietly. "He saved that girl!" "He's a hero!"

: Hiroshi, you saved Yui!

: Who?

: Thought I saw something kind of weird... Ah well. Whatever.

: See you later, Lorde!

He's still a dick. Oh well, important vote coming up.

SSNeoman posted:

Okay that was cute. This game's growing on me.

That's kind of the only reason I finished this game. Pretty much the reason I like it too.

Sorta big decision time?

So, we're kind of awful at everything. If we try hard, we might be acceptable at things. But as we are, we can't be acceptable at everything. So for now, we need to pick a specialisation. Functionally there ain't much of a difference but different characters like different stats. We'll split this up into 5 categories of Lit, Science, Art, Sports and Popularity.

Literature

These three kind of come as a bundle, being friends. Getting along with one of them means being on better terms with the others. Rena writes, Kiku will yell at you for doing poorly on Lit tests and Yui likes art/poetry in general.

This is somewhat difficult. Literature is hard stat to raise, Kiku has very high standards for everything and Yui is pretty distant. In practice, we'll probably just be hanging out with Rena a lot.

Science

Yeah, we haven't even met two of these guys yet. Aya likes Sci-Fi and the other two like machines. I'll refer to them as Minions #1 and #2 for the girl and the boy.

Basically the same difficulty as Literature, maybe a little easier. When working out, the Science decay isn't as bad but when grooming, the decay is worse. Aya involves hanging out with Aya and having to work the relation system a bit, Minion #1 just likes Science and Minion #2 wants to hang out with a popular guy because of his self-esteem issues.

Oh, and Minion #2 is a gay route that doesn't involve Hiroshi.

Art

Yes, this is quite similar to the Literature group. The only difference here is that Alice is a musician and Kiku doesn't care as much about Art. Rena does drawings and Yui likes Art, as I've mentioned.

Probably the easiest option here. Art gives you a bit of Lit and Fashion, so you're studying for two tests at once and not dumping Fashion. Alice is actually very friendly (unless you're friends with Hiroshi), Rena is very friendly if you're on her side but Yui is still distant. It's probably easier to talk to Yui this way, though.

Sport

Ah, generic high school sports. Aya likes Kiku and Hiroshi and they like her back, but Hiroshi and Kiku do not get along in the slightest. Get along with Kiku or Alice and Hiroshi won't be friends with you easily. Aya would get boosts from hanging out with either of those and she might like swimming, Kiku is actually an athlete despite not seeming like one at first glance and Hiroshi loves a good challenge.

Hardest route, I'd say. Aya's pretty friendly but Kiku and Hiroshi both have high standards. Hiroshi pops up in a lot of events but I usually enjoy dunking him too much. So this is more of "hang out with Aya and whoever will take pity on us." As a side note, Aya is my least favourite character. You may have picked that up.

Popularity

Putting this up as it's own category is kind of eh, but Naoko doesn't really fit into anything else. Kiku and Hiroshi both expect you to be decently fashionable and Minion #2 is hoping that someone else's coolness will rub off on him.

This would be kind of tricky. You don't get tested on Fashion or Popularity. I may put Hiroshi and Kiku under these categories but they ain't going to hang out with us. It's just Naoko and Minion #2 and triggering Minion #2's events will probably give us a fair bit of Science as well. If you really wanted Naoko, we could go Science since Minion #2 is her brother and he'll positively influence our relations with her.

If we do this, you might see the other stats be a bit good bit ahead of Fashion/Popularity anyway. We really need to pass our exams.

???

Satsuko is not actually an option. Kasumi's route can't be done until you do every other route for reasons. It's definitely a spoiler I want to keep under wraps. We'll see why later this loop.

So, pick 1 out of the 5 categories of Lit, Science, Art, Sports, Popularity on the strawpoll at the bottom of this post. The more votes a category gets, the higher priority I'll put on that category.

There's no guarantee we're good enough to get an ending but at the start of the Year 2 terms, I'll throw up a vote if we're anywhere near an ending. Don't expect it unless we're hanging out with one of Rena/Alice/Aya. Those are the easiest routes, I think.

That should be it. Vote here.

:siren: Not counting any votes in the thread since I can't be sure if you've voted on the poll or not. Vote at the link to make it count. :siren:

Rena's much friendly than Yui who is really hard to get in touch with.

Unfortunately, being friends with Rena means that Hiroshi will only hate you if you really try. I mean, insulting Hiroshi at every turn is rather natural for me, but it might take a bit more. Like insulting Aya at every chance as well.

Quick amendment to vote post - Your vote will only count if you actually go on to the poll. I don't know if the people voting in the thread have voted in the poll or not so I'd rather have things in one place for fairness's sake.

Oh, and I'll probably close the vote in 3 days.

Voted called on the 18th, not counting any changes to the poll from then. It was 8 for Science, 10 for Art.

Looks like we're rolling Art. I'll see if I can put Science into 2nd place since it did get the second most votes.

Lord Koth posted:

It has been a while since I've seen the requirements, but from what I recall Rena is indeed probably the easiest route, with Alice up there as well. Aya's may technically be easy, but I always had difficulty actually getting friendly enough with her for it to matter - mainly because I just found it hard to actually take the +Aya choices.

Kiku is almost certainly the hardest route in the game, or very nearly. As in "Are you getting nearly straight A's? No? Then you're not getting this route."

Pretty much the same as my experience with this game. I actually did Aya 2nd last, after Kiku.

Glazius posted:

So I guess Satsuko is actively avoiding us when we might die so as to preserve the integrity of the timeline and also her chances at going back to have a fulfilling high-school life?

I actually have no clue what Satsuko does in her spare time at this point. Can't remember if it's ever explained. We know what she does later on in the loop, but that's only briefly explained in the Golden ending.

So after saving Yui from the truck and getting our affairs in relative order, we've decided to become an artist. Just to see Hiroshi's reaction if his sworn enemy starts dating his sister.

That was Monday. This is Tuesday.

Is that Hiroshi talking with everyone...?

...Oh, great. This scene. Spoilers - We can skip it after seeing it the first time. I haven't bothered watching this scene since like last year. In real life.

: You're so awesome, Hiroshi. Man, I wish I could've seen it!

: Yes...that sounds so brave and courageous of you.

thank you kiku.

Our options are a) be an idiot, b) be Hiroshi, c) be a dick to Yui. Well, simplified but that's the idea.

: What's going on, guys?

As the protagonist of a dating sim, Goon is allowed to be an idiot.

: Haven't you heard, Lorde? I thought you were there... Hiroshi saved Yui's life yesterday! She walked out into the street in front of a bus and he charged in and saved her.

: Oh, don't. You're making it sound like I'm some kind of hero. I was just in the proper place at the proper time, alright?

: Heh.

: He really did pull through.

I didn't like this scene back when I first saw it and I don't like it now.

: I'm glad you see me like how everyone else does, Lorde. After all, I am a hero.

If I was lazy enough to take captures of Kasumi talking for 4 lines, I'm sure as hell not writing 5 lines from Aya.

: Ha, that's me alright.

: He may be a hero, Aya, but he is not a super hero.

Yeesh. That pushes up the max height of the textbox.

...

There's been a few of these where Goon just thinks "..." to himself. Kind of hard to express.

If Goon can remember this scene, he can skip it. Not sure if it requires the memory quirks or not. Perhaps it's time to consider saving for a quirk, but on the other hand, we're doing an Art run with 1 Creativity.

: Hmm? On what?

: On doing well on your literature examination.

: Oh... you found out about that?

So, we have a dumb option and a good option. I have picked the dumb option sometimes, but that's for Hiroshi congratulating you on doing well in PE. I did it in a Kiku run, actually.

: Of course.

: Fantastic. You will go far with that attitude.

We finally get in a day of studying math but then Friday hits us with another event.

Hmm? Aya has some very negative interactions with some of the cast. If we're hanging out with Alice/Rena/Yui, we're probably going to be annoying Aya a lot. No real loss.

: ...

: Yes?

: Can you hear this crap? School's almost over for the semester and Yui's SAD about it. SAD.

: ...

: It's not enough that she's weird, she actually LIKES school?

: I...like to read, that is all...

: Hey, I like to read.

We're an artist (or trying to be), not a swimmer.

: Yeah, but do you like reading and studying and all that crap? Do you like the literature and poetry they make us read?

: I...like the poetry. A lot.

: I wasn't asking you!

: Yes, I do like studying poetry and literature.

It's much easier on the mind than studying science.

: Oh, you're just like Kiku! Always going on about how it's good to culture yourself.

: I just enjoy reading this sort of thing.

: I do so like to read...I wish I knew others who liked studying as well as I.

I kind of liked studying math back in high school. It was a puzzle of sorts. Also, signs of personality from Yui?

: We can't all just live in the school and spend our entire lives getting perfect marks!

: I...do not live in the school, I live...

: It's just an expression. Anyway. I mean, I'm always working so hard in school but I never get anywhere.

: School is just harder for some people.

trust me, we ain't sailing for long

: ...

: Yeah, you act all shy and all but you're bursting with pride. I'd drop out if I could. I mean, the law's not stopping me. Only dad is.

: And I'm sure your friends.

: Maybe. Maybe not. Ah well. I'll have a few weeks now to where I won't have to think about it. See you two later.

I swear, one day Yui will show off the fact that she has a personality. We do some more Art.

Also, uh, our Popularity fell by 4 points down to 8. This is because Hiroshi saved Yui instead of us. So I can't tell if Kiku's praise actually helped us or not.

: This is a good opportunity to socialise, so you should go!

This unlocks the beach as a date spot but I didn't grab a screen cap of it. Pity.

: Wait, how do you know?

: Well, I saw Alice downtown, and she mentioned it to me! I'd go with you, but I don't have a bathing suit...

Are you excited for swimsuits? I'm not but I wouldn't say they're NSFW. Well, not really any more so than reading a VN LP at work but eh...

: Yeah, it should be nice.

: I'm so proud that you're already taking the initiative and working to make new friends all on your own! It brings a tear to my eye...

: ...

: Not now, don't let me keep you! Go and have a great time, and bring me back some seashells!

Game: It's another gorgeous day in Shira Oka. The cool beach air swirls around you as you look out onto the sea...

: Hey, Alice.

: Not bad, I guess...

No way to be as cheery as Alice here.

: Yeah, the water looks great.

: Yeah, I hope the others hurry up and get here so we can go in!

: Where are they?

Looking pretty copy-pasted there, Hiroshi.

: Fashionably late, I see?

so much for the legendary womaniser hiroshi

unless this is something weird like from the world god only knows

: What?! You jerk!! How dare you!

: Where's Naoko?

Sunglasses spotted. Also, good plan Alice? I mean, if you wanted to be alone with Hiroshi at the beach...

: Don't say such harsh words in front of Lorde or he might cry.

: What? He's not a two-year-old, like you think everyone is.

: Well, this is going to be great.

: What do you mean?

: Aya called me earlier to say that she and Kiku couldn't make it.

Aside from these two, Kiku's the only other character I remember having a swimsuit outfit. Not sure if we'll get the event with that, but it's great event (since you can dunk Hiroshi).

: Is everything okay?

After like Year 9, I don't think there was really a divide between the boys and the girls when it came to hanging out. I mean, there was that one nerd group obsessed with Warhammer but they were just awful in general...

Hiroshi is 2nd year, high school. In Australia, that'd be Year 11. So it's kind of weird seeing this.

: So immature.

Guess it ain't just me.

: *Groan* No Naoko, and now I'm stuck at the beach with Alice...

: Where's Rena?

: Well, we should so something.

: Well, you guys can do something.

: What?

I'll admit, Hiroshi kind of grew on me. I used to rank Aya above him but now I'd put Hiroshi above her. It's a Gary Oak sort of thing.

: Why are you always like this? Who's good enough for you?

: Great. Later.

Game: Hiroshi picks up his things and leaves.

: Well, it doesn't have to be.

Goon's a hell of a lot smoother than I was in high school.

: Hmm?

: Hmm...sure, why not.

Game: You walk along the shore with Alice.

: You know, it's a shame I don't come here more often.

: Why not?

: How long do you practice?

: I practice about 4 to 5 hours every day.

: Really?

I'm glad I never went into music.

: If you really love something, you should let it become your whole life.

: Won't you get sick of it, then?

: No way! I mean, there's always a time every now and then when I wish I could be doing something other than practising... But it's not that common.

: What about the beach?

Pun option is tempting but this feels like she's asking for advice.

: Maybe it can be your "reward" for practising?

: Reward?

: Like, maybe you can take every Saturday morning for yourself to come down here to clear your head.

: You know, that's an amazing idea. I think that's what I could use in order to stay fresh and focused all the time!

I used to want to be a psychologist. Even read a bit of my sister's psychology textbook. Long time ago though...

: You think so?

: Sure!

Then there's a screen fade to black.

: Aww, back to our spot already? That was a great little walk. Thanks for doing that, Lorde. I'm really really glad this day turned out well after all!

: Sure.

: *laughs* I guess I'll go practice...but I won't forget my new little "resolution!" Thanks, Lorde! Later!

Inspired by her talk of music, we take up Art.

Such majesty. We schedule a day out at the beach on next Saturday. Maybe we'll see Alice there.

On Sunday, we run into Rena.

In this screenshot, you can see that the narration is represented by Okashi Studio's mascot. It's a cat thing?

: Hey, Rena. What's up?

The day's already been eaten by the event. First option is just there to skip this if you want but this is a random event so it's not that common.

: Oh...I was just thinking of the story of Momotaro.

: So why are you thinking about that?

: How interesting.

: I'm glad you think so too! So, Lorde, what would you do?

: Do about what?

: What would you do if you found a baby inside a peach?

Someone else's problem.

: Does it have to be a peach?

You can get this event at a lot of different times. And you can actually get a different response depending on affection values.

: I'd raise it with you.

She goes all blushy if she's into you. As it is, we've barely spoken to her.

: Hehe.

She didn't get mad and we got XP. Worth.

We go onto a week of Art, finishing with this critical fail.

Well, it's someone.

: Oh, hey, Naoko!

: Today's such a lovely day, isn't it?

: Yeah, the sky's really clear.

: Yes, that's why I came to the beach. I thought I'd take a nice walk or something.

Ah, this is where Fashion comes into play. Depending on your Fashion stat in comparison to where it should be, you'll get either a malus or bonus to your dates. This is a par message but the Fashion levels expected are basically the same as grades. We're doing Art which'll drag Fashion up a bit and we did dump all our points into Charm, so we might hold our Fashion at par. Maybe.

: So how are you today?

: I'm doing just fine.

Game: Reaching into her bag, Naoko pulls out a camera.

: Lorde, would you like to take some pictures around the beach?

: Hmm? What sort of pictures?

: Hmm...beach flowers, animals, shells...things like that.

That sounds... like Art. Goon is up for this.

Game: She runs off to the side of the beach, snapping a photo.

: Oh, alright. Do you have another camera?

: No, only the one. Is that a problem?

: No. We can share.

: Alright! Do you see anything nice to photograph around?

: There's plenty! This beach is always so beautiful.

: Nice- get a good photo?

Tide pools are more of an experience. You hear them and smell them. Not really great for pictures in my opinion.

: Wanna try to get some shots of the sea birds?

: Sure! Those birds can be tricky to photograph though. They tend to move a lot...hard to get a good shot. But we'll give it a go.

: Alright.

Game: You and Naoko wander around the beach until you find a small flock of birds.

: Alright, there's some! Here we go.

Game: She dashes one way trying to get a shot.

Game: She trips over a rock, looking through the viewfinder at the birds. You help her up.

: Oh...I should pay more attention.

: Are you alright?

: Yes. I'm fine.

: Do you have any bread?

If @probirdrights is anything to go by, attention and bread is an irresistible combo.

: Hmm...no bread, but I have a little bit of vanilla cake I made.

: Well, let's try that. Let's break up some and throw it for the birds to eat.

: Alright.

Game: She removes the cake from her bag and scatter some crumbs from it on the beach. The birds quickly flock to it.

: Oh, great!

Game: She starts snapping photos immediately.

: Looks like those birds really love your cake, Naoko!

: Haha, you think so?

: Of course, Naoko- everyone loves your cakes. Even birds.

: Heehee... I got some really good shots, thanks for the advice.

Yes, that is a generic response. Naoko says "bye, dear" regardless of affection or friendship. It's just how she is.

Checking in on Satsuko about some people:
  1. Alice - No romantic interest. More of a friend than an acquaintance?
  2. Aya - Doesn't consider us a friend at all.
  3. Hiroshi - Not much of a friend.
  4. Kiku - Not much of a friend.
  5. Naoko - "Romantic feelings aren't developing." "Friendship headed in the right direction."
  6. Rena - "Friendship hasn't really gone anywhere." She doesn't know what to make of us.
  7. Yui - Not much of a friend.
Next time, we should get through the rest of the 1st semester holidays. We had three events in our first week of this update (4 if you count the fact the truck is also in this week), so hopefully we get some time to peacefully work on our stats. We'll need like 5 more points in the tested subjects to stay safe for now.

Aya's the prime culprit for that stuff but Naoko is pretty bad. It's even worse if you catch them on the transition frames. When moving from one emotion to another, they do actually go through transition frames.

I posted this earlier but both Naoko and Aya are in transition frames here.

We dumped all our points into Charm and I'm determined to get something out of it.

The week goes relatively well.

I'll have to go to the festival with them tomorrow, too, I assume. I suppose I should head to the living room and get started. We have a lot to do before night comes.

Game: You spend the first day of Obon with your family, doing the things necessary for the holiday. The family altar is set up with the food, incense, and the cucumber horse and eggplant cow. You head back to your room to get a little rest afterwards.

Obon is a Buddhist festival for commemorating your ancestors. More info here, or you can wait a bit and the game will try to explain it.

Ugh, Obon is a yearly thing for Shira Oka. It does change from Year 1 to Year 2 to Year 3 and I think the conversation with Satsuko changes a bit each loop. I'm not a fan since it eats up important time.

: You know I am! Holidays always excite me. Did you have fun with the family?

: Yeah. We did all the traditional things.

: Great. And once it gets dark you'll get to light the lanterns.

The lanterns light up the path for the spirits to follow or something.

: Yes. It won't be dark for a while, though.

Goon's family only come into play on Obon. They don't get mentioned much otherwise and we never see them.

: You better go see what they want. They sound like they really need you.

: Yeah, I better. See you, Satsuko.

: Oh, Lorde! Lorde!

: Oh, hi, Alice.

: I got sent out to buy some more fireworks. We ran out and my host family wanted more for the little nieces and nephews and cousins.

: Ah...I'm out trying to pick up matches or a lighter. We ran out of that.

: Well, I have some lighters in my pocket right now. I could give them to you and save you the trouble. It was hard to get them. Almost nobody was open!

: Great! Thank you, Alice.

Option B is out since Alice is better at school than us and I don't think Goon knows how to cook yet. So C is out as well. That leaves Option A, which I'm very happy to take.

: I'll tell Hiroshi off for you!

: No, that's alright. Just tell me all about these Obon things I've been doing all day.

: Sure. What do you want to know about?

Because of Alice, we have a lot of chances to explain what's going on when we see something that's meant to be Japanese. Honestly, it's not a bad way of doing things. Better than an idiot protagonist.

: Well, let's see. Tell me about the eggplant and the cucumber. They just stuck toothpicks on them and put them on the family altar.

: I see, interesting. How about the lanterns? We're going to hang lanterns once it gets dark, I'm told.

: You hang the lanterns out so that the dea can find their way back to your house easily.

: And the other food we put on the altar was for the spirits, too?

: You bet.

: Oh, I see. Thanks for the explanation.

Err, that seems like it might be awkward to carry stuff around like that. Then again, I've never worn a bra so...

: Well, I'm off for home, now that I got those fireworks. Have fun tonight!

: Alright, you too. Thank you for the lighters.

: Bye! Happy Obon.

Game: You hurry home and arrive well before dark, with plenty of time left to go to the family tomb to greet the spirits and light the leading fires. Afterwards, you go to bed, knowing you will spend tomorrow with your family at home.

Luckily, we can get in a day of study on Sunday, even if we fail. Monday comes and the last part of Obon triggers.

Game: It seems that almost everyone is in attendance.

: It's sad...

: I do not see Kasumi, either...

: Doesn't matter. She'd bring everyone down. Come on, let's set them out.

Harsh, but true.

Game: You and everyone else walk to the shore, setting loose hundreds of white lanterns down the river to guide the spirits home.

: Rena-

: ...Yeah?

: ... You forgot cousin Emiko.

: Oh! Goodbye, Emiko!

: Wow... so beautiful. I wish we did this back in America...

I kind of would like to see the lanterns on the river. Sounds like hell for the environment but I can imagine it'd be pretty.

: May they have a safe trip.

: See you guys next year!

: Goodbye...

: Farewell, everyone. Until next year.

Game: Obon is complete for the year.

After Obon, we go on to screw up an entire week of Art. Good job, Goon. We catch a bit of rest on the weekend.

Our next week of Art goes fine. We might be able to push for a B in Art next term but we'll have to be careful not to fall to D's in Science or Sports. Saturday, we attempt a bit of Math and Aya finds us on the Sunday.

: Grr, it's that time of the year again! The worst time!

: What is it, Aya?

Our Towel Manager action actually disappears. Swim Team and Towel Manager are just temporary actions but Swim Team is so good. I'm not sad to see Towel Manager go at all though.

: This is one of the only times of the year where I get to regularly show off my talents to people! Without it, I'm nothing socially, until the next thing comes up. Nothing!

The ONLY time?

You were always nothing in my heart, Aya.

: I guess you'll just have to suck it up and get over it.

This is objectively the wrong answer. But I swear there's been too much Aya in these updates, so I kind of felt like taking the wrong anwer.

Besides, I want to see if we can get someone to hate us.

: You better explain yourself, Lorde!

: There's not much you can do about the summer ending. It's not as if you can control time. So you might as well just stop whining and get over it, right?

: Hmph. Well, some of us like to think the world isn't completely turned to crap. Whatever. At least the new school year isn't always bad. Yeah, there is a ton of schoolwork piled on, and there's all those boring school meetings and the cleanup of the classroom every day.

: You bet.

The only club we can join is the Swim club so clubs aren't great. I'd really like to join the ikebana club but we can't. Bit sad.

: Pretty girls.

It was the most art response we had.

: Pfft! Shows what you know! The best part of school is meeting new people. Being popular is always the best!

That'd be Minions #1 and #2. We could've met #1 earlier if we'd had a different set of meeting events.

Super genius brother and his friend? I wonder who she could mean.

Funny thing. If you talk to Satsuko, she'll talk about being closer to Naoko by being friends with Minion #2, even giving you his name. It's useless advice since you haven't met yet.

: Well, I have to go now, Lorde. Gotta do something with the family. Dad wants me and the brothers and sisters and mom to go do something together before we're all due back at school.

: I'll see you later then, Aya.

: Bye now!

Perks of taking stills from video - I can actually catch this working out critical fail before it zooms off to the left.

On the Sunday before school starts again, we run into these two.

: You are a strange girl, Aya.

Tokusatsu just means special effects and thus covers kaiju (monster), sentai (power rangers) and other stuff. I thought it was just sentai but I looked it up.

: Well, your brother is only eight, Aya...

: Whatever.

The second option sounds like the creeper one so...

: Not very long.

: We were just discussing what we had done over the break.

I can't really talk. I just caught up on the Ace Attorney anime (so glad they're making original content now) and I was going to watch Monthly Girl's Nozaki-kun so...

: Yeah, says you. At least I didn't spend the entire time with my nose stuck in a book.

: I did not either. I had many things I was doing. After all, I have dance practice. I even went in to school with Yui to make some ikebana.

: Yeah, yeah, same boring crap you always do!

...You know, this conversation does actually remind me of high school. I had a friend who we ribbed for doing some extra drama stuff outside of school.

: I am glad to hear you find me so thoroughly entertaining.

The second options disappears, then the third disappears. These timed dialogue sections are a bit weird with keyboard controls so I missed the second option.

: I didn't get everything done during break that I wanted to.

: Oh man, me either.

: Nor me.

: What? How could you have not? You were always busy with something! I barely saw you during the break at all!

: Just because I was always busy does not mean I got everything I wanted to done.

: What didn't you get done then, huh?

: Reading isn't that important.

: Excuse me?

: It really isn't! It's boring and all it does is stuff your head with lots of facts you'll never use.

There's a certain irony in a game that's nearly a VN calling reading boring. Can't quite put my finger on it though.

: *sigh* Says you, perhaps.

: I wasn't done yet, KIKU. Anyway, I picked up some books at the library about space exploration, but I didn't get around to reading them. I figured anything I can learn in them I can learn on TV.

no please, read the textbooks, you're going to fail university if you don't look at them

: Are you trying to be funny?

: Of course not. May I ask you what your sources in this endeavour are, Aya?

: Uh huh.

: It was about space, though! Like, what space is like.

: I see. Anything else?

: I believe you need to research this a little bit more thoroughly.

: Oh, I don't. I've learned plenty.

: What's the surface of Neptune like, Aya?

: Er, uh...what?

: It is a good question. Perhaps you should answer it, Aya.

: Why does it matter what the surface of Neptune is like?

: Why would you want to go to a planet that may be uninhabitable?

: To explore, of course.

There's probably some value in going to the planet but my half-minute research didn't give me anything big.

: Or perhaps a planet that is impossible to land on. Some planets are gaseous, Aya. I think Neptune may be.

Apparently Neptune has a core of ice and rock.

: So are you implying you will land upon its core?

: Sure.

: *sigh*

: Anyway, not to cut you off, Lorde, but I think me and Kiku have got to be going.

I've never played DDR or a DDR-like.

: You're going to love it.

: I am unsure. Dancing games aren't like real dancing.

: Nope. They're WAY better.

: If you so insist, heehee.

And that was our school holidays. We'll be going back to school and meeting up with Minions #1 and #2 for real. As well as a bunch of other events. We'll also have to study hard to avoid failing Science or Sports.

Can't guarentee much. That's the 2nd loop, really.

Mysticblade
Oct 22, 2012

We're back. You might recognise these new people. I've introduced them as Minions #1 and #2 already.

What's Hiroshi up to over there?

Primary school insults, I see.

You can't beat that kind of thinking with facts.

: I had some for lunch, remember?

: That's not the point! The point is-

: Hey, Lorde, come here for a sec!

Hmm, what's going on?

: What is it?

: Just look at those two, will ya?

: Hmm, I don't know...

: Hiroshi, stop being such a pain!

: Well, we do work well together!

: It's our first day of high school!

: Interesting.

: Really?

: Cucumber-hair! That has a nice ring to it...

: Suzu, he's making fun of you!

: You guys transferred in the middle of the year?

: Aren't they the cutest? They're practically inseperable, joined at the waist!

Not gonna lie, I've been in the position of a senior making fun of juniors. Just part of high school.

: She's just my good friend, okay? Stop saying that sort of stuff, Hiroshi!

: Nice to meet you both.

: The only reason you would do that is to get on my sister's good side. So just forget it.

: Because I know you, Hiroshi. So just drop it already.

: *sigh* It's your loss, man.

: ...

: Come on, I'm just trying to help you out, Kazuki! You and your girlfriend!

I don't need any help, thanks. And stop calling her my girlfriend!

: Don't cry, Suzu! We're still friends! You're just not my girlfriend.

: Oh...I guess I don't get the difference. Isn't that what a girlfriend is?

: Girlsfriends are closer than regular friends.

: Oh! Okay, I see.

: Yeah, that's it.

: Ooh! Aren't you happy, Kazuki? Plenty of guys would give ANYTHING to be in your position.

Honestly, Suzu's better as a friend than a romantic interest. Her route's decent enough, I guess.

: Yeah, just leave them alone, Hiroshi.

Kazuki and Hiroshi may sort of be friends? They have times when they're being friendly but they're usually going against each other. Either way, being friends with Hiroshi is not something we're going to bother trying in this loop.

: You should see some of the weird things these guys make, Lorde.

: Weird things?

: They work down at Ikegawa Motors shop after school.

: Hey! The things we make aren't useless!

: Hehe, Kazuki to the rescue!

: I said cut it out!

: Okay, okay... I may like to tease them, but I'll admit that they make some pretty cool things sometimes...

: Did you hear that, Kazuki?

: Yeah, when you're not making crap, anyway.

: Yeah, real jealous of your portable light switches and exploding rocket boots.

I'd use a portable light switch. It'd be like a remote.

: I don't see what's so weird with making things like that.

I wonder if people thought a remote for a TV was weird at some point.

: Thank you, Lorde.

: Yeah, thanks!

: Heh, you're weird just like them, aren't you, Lorde?

: All I'm saying is-

: Actually, you should go down and check the place out sometime, Lorde. Sometimes the old man who runs the shop lets Kazuki help out on this hot rod he's building.

: Wow, really?

: Yeah, it's pretty cool. Normally I fix motorcycles there, but cars are so much cooler.

: We should build our own car someday, Kazuki!

: Yeah, you guys should make me a go-kart. I'd ride that thing around all the time... Hey Kazuki, does your sister like go-karts?

Imagine driving a go-kart around town. Tokyo road traffic wasn't too bad the last time I went, but I wasn't paying much attention to it.

: Come on, be a pal!

: Hehe, Naoko's afraid of the things you make, Kazuki.

: No, she's afraid of the things YOU make.

: Oh, that's true...

: Hmm, maybe I'll swing by the bike shop sometime.

We can't go to bike shop as a date spot or anything but there'll be a few events there if we hang with Kazuki or Suzu.

Goon should appreciate other forms of art. Like portable light switches.

: Sure, I think it's pretty interesting.

: Oh, great. You're welcome to the shop any time, then.

: Yeah! You have to stop by again one of these days!

: Thanks, I will.

: And you'll have to show us around the school sometime. I know this isn't your first time here.

For a 15-year old, Kazuki seems pretty short. There used to be info about this up on Shira Oka's website. We had some neat infographics with stuff like height, likes, etc.

I'm bringing this up because Kazuki's 159cm (5'4"?). Suzu's 158cm, Hiroshi's 178cm and Naoko's 175cm. So Kazuki is shorter than basically everyone around him. It's a bit hard to tell from the art.

: HEY!

That's Kazuki and Suzu seen. Tuesday hits us with another event.

: Someone who's got his head on his shoulders...

Seeing Hiroshi this much seems rarer than seeing Aya this much. I mean, that Kazuki/Suzu event feels like a one-time thing and the first time I met Suzu, it was a different, more generic event. So that event was pleasantly new to me.

: What's that supposed to mean?! You're such a jerk!

Oh, right, they're arguing.

: You're crazy...

I, uh, don't remember getting this event much either. I've seen this like twice before, maybe?

No surprise, they're at it again...

: Hey, what are you looking at?

Shira Oka has a lot of events. There's two events relating to Lit and Science respectively that I've never seen but are meant to be huge boons.

I'm talking about the Lit and Science super trainings. I don't think we'll be getting Uber Fashion this loop but we might get Suave Chat.

: Hey, all I said is that you'll regret it.

: And how would you know what I would feel?

...Why did you bother asking him, Alice?

: Besides, I'm sure you couldn't take the pain...

: Why you...!

: Hey, hey, come on...

Reminder - Hiroshi is a Sports guy. Punching him is not a good idea.

: You should try to make yourself just a little bit more useful and actually DO something instead of standing around all day spouting out your opinions!

: Hey, you wouldn't have mentioned tattoos if you didn't want my opinion.

: I think Alice has the right idea.

I don't have a tattoo nor do I plan on getting one. But they can look pretty good.

: ...What?

: Not everyone regrets their tattoos, Hiroshi. And besides, they look pretty awesome if they're done well.

: See! Someone agrees with me.

: If it's something you really want, Alice, then you should definitely go for it one day.

: Thanks, and I'll make sure I let you know when I get it one so you can come with me!

Though, most of the people I know with tattoos got theirs in uni, so...

That would've been my reaction in high school too. Can't imagine a Japanese high school would approve of their students having tattoos either.

: Heh...

: Like he knows anything...

: That's Hiroshi for you...

: Yeah, there's no changing him...

: So what kind of tattoo would you get?

Seems a little odd. Anyone in the thread, do you have a tattoo and what does it look like?

: That sounds pretty neat.

: You think so? I was hoping someone else would like it.

: Yes, I think that would suit you.

: Aww, thanks, Lorde!

: No problem.

After this, we get a day of study in before we get another event. Been a busy week, huh?

oh great, it's you

Look like Aya's really working hard. That's a rare sight...

: ...

: Hello, Aya. What are you doing?

: Sorry...

: You have NO IDEA how much work I have to get done before the period is over!

: Good luck, then...

Ah, last minute assignments. I remember those in high school, but in uni, I was a little quicker to finish. Done a few hours before submission, not a few minutes.

Game: You see Suzu walk into the room from the corner of your eye.

: Hey, Suzu.

: Greetings! What brings you here?

: I saw Aya working, so I figured a miracle must be occurring here...

: Hmm, it does seem to be quite rare to see her at a computer...

I kind of wonder about the time period this game is set in. No official word on it but the uniform Suzu's wearing has been less popular in schools in the past few years. There was something about them in the Tokimeki LP but I can't quite remember where it brought up the topic.

: No, it's just rare that she's doing work instead of playing a game...

: Heehee, that's true! What is she working on?

: Ugh, I'll never get this done on time!

: She probably has a paper due next period...

Not quite sure which one is more insulting. I guess the top option is a bit nicer, maybe?

: That is typical Aya for you...

She'll yell at us either way. Not much agency in this event.

: Apologies!

: Sorry!

: Hmm...

: So what are you working on, Suzu?

: Oh... for biology class?

: No, just out of interest.

: ...Oh.

: It's quite fascinating, actually!

: I see...

: Ahh, I'm so relieved...

: Oh, don't forget to save your work, Aya.

Part of the reason that the time period bugs me is because computer literacy seems to be kind of odd here. I feel like people are a lot more used to computers these days.

: I know, I know, I'm not an idiot! Okay, it's saved. Just have to print now and I'm done... Come on, print!

: What seems to be the problem?

: This stupid computer is lagging and won't print my paper!

: It appears that you've asked it to print several times in succession.

Better that than the printer network be down.

: It's just lagging heavily because you attempted to do too many things at once. With this computer setup, it takes a while for a connection to be established with the printer, but you got too impatient.

Explaining stuff that seems basic to me reminds me of Go Go Nippon, actually. Never played it but my friend streamed like an hour of it once.

: I don't care, as long as I get my paper! How do we get this thing unfrozen?! Tell me we can unfreeze this computer! PLEASE!!

It's not quite the same. I mean, Go Go Nippon had a guy shut down because he saw a bidet. Goon's a lot better than that.

: Deep breath, Aya...

This is the fourth picture I have of Aya yelling in this event.

: Geez, sorry...

: Well, there are two options: One is just letting the computer sit until it can catch up with itself.

: How long would that take?

: About ten minutes, by the looks of it...

: I don't have ten minutes! I have to have this printed out for next period, and my teacher won't accept it if I walk in with it late! What's the other option?!

: Well, if you restart the computer, you might be able to print your paper more quickly if you're patient and only click the print button once.

: Great! Let's do that.

: Okay...

: Come on, come on, load faster...

: You really out to have more patience if you wish to continue using computers...

: Yeah, yeah, yeah...okay! We're back to the desktop.

: Open, just open the program and open your paper.

Riveting dialogue, I know. I've seen this a few times before and it doesn't seem to change much. Goon doesn't even bother remembering it, I think. It's a skip in the future.

: Okay...got it!

: Okay, now just be patient and let it print...

: Alright...

: See? It was done in not time at all.

: Thanks so much! I owe one, big-time!

: Heehee, don't worry about it.

: Glad to see it worked out for you.

Well, at least we got something for sitting through that.

After this, I decided to check with Satsuko who liked us the least. It's Hiroshi and according to Satsuko, we're on his bad side. Gonna be fun seeing how low we can get that.

Anyway, we've got 2 points of XP now. That's enough to either grab a point of Creativity which would make us better at Art (probably a good idea for an art run) or go for a trait. We'd need 8 points for Attentive, 10 points for Determined and 12 points for Lucky.

Quick reminder - All three of these options will give us more potential dialogue options, Luck will improve our success rate at actions making us better at everything, while Attentive will slow down the panic timer. The dialogue options with panic timers are a bit fiddly when using keyboard controls but it's probably not worth taking into account.

Also, we're not actually an Amnesiac. Just Forgetful. It'd be 20 points to have an Encyclopedic memory so that's not really much of an option.

It's probably a good idea to get some stats before more quirks but the option is there.

Just looking for a general answer, not a real vote. I'll take a look tomorrow.

The most anti-Hiroshi run would probably be a Kiku or Alice run. Both of them will decrease Hiroshi's friendship with you if you're friends with them, since rivals. Hiroshi's kind of a character that you have to try to have him warm up to you, though. Even on later cycles, it takes effort to get him to something beyond "sort of approves of you".

Kiku's run will make you get all the stats though and Hiroshi's much more willing to be friends with you if you aren't a loser. So an Alice run is probably the most likely to have Hiroshi hate you. Honestly, I was expecting Aya to dislike us more at this point.

Mysticblade
Oct 22, 2012

There's plenty of options in events to dunk him but we're mostly going to need to be a hell of a lot better to do it. He's strong in academics, sport and for some reason, popularity. And if we don't see a certain event by the time we finish Kiku's route, I'll tell you about it.

I've used the term "dunk" for a lot of stuff, actually. Were you wondering about anything in particular?

Mysticblade
Oct 22, 2012

Well, we'll be saving our points for the luck quirk. This or investing points into Creativity are probably the best bets at this point, although we could always use more points in Intelligence.

I thought I'd spoil you guys a bit. You'll see what the deal is with this.

We're back. This is the first time I've shown off the calender, I think. It's very useful. You can see what events have gone on recently although that is mildly dependant on knowing the name of the event. You can also see exams and certain other events coming up.

Also, meeting Kazuki/Suzu counts as Suzu's event? I felt like it was more so Kazuki's but whatever. We do some art on the weekend, then start some Science on the week but Monday throws us an event.

Oh, this.

: About time we found you.

: What's wrong?

: Hiroshi's upset because you haven't been coming to the culture festival planning events.

: Come ON! He's had all summer!

: Aya says she doesn't think he knew. He was out sick when the announcements of the team were made, right?

: He was there when we were arguing over what to make the topic of it, remember!?

: I must have not realised how close it was to the date.

"I forgot" never seems to work as an excuse for me...

: I figured. I was hoping you wouldn't be so cruel as to just abandon us without any contribution. I mean, Hiroshi's been helping, right?

: What?!? I'll have you know I'm a great student.

: Oh, you say that a lot.

: What kind of events are taking place this year?

: Well, since you weren't involved...

: You mean, since he didn't even bother to show up...

I don't remember if this is linked to being friends with Alice, but I'm going to say it probably isn't. Sure puts her in a good light, though.

: It's not like it doesn't happen every year at schools.

: *sigh* Anyway... we've been working on an idea Naoko proposed.

: You only liked it because your precious Naoko suggested it. I liked it because it was good.

: As if!

Hey, here's our first task where we have a progress bar. As we do the activity, the bar will fill up. Depending on how much you fill up the bar, you'll either pass or you'll fail when the deadline for the task comes in.

: We only have a little more to go. So please come help us finish up, alright?

: Alright.

A month and a half is a bit tight, but it's not impossible and we do get have some time off to rest or do something. Not much though.

Eek. We get some Science done and Friday pops another event.

A Yui event is a bit rare, especially for such an early Goon. Our work on Art is likely paying off here.

: Oh, Yui?

: I wanted to know if tonight... You would come to meet me in Kirin Park.

: When?

Yeah, I remember this event now.

: Okay, sure.

We may as well spend time with Yui since we'll likely get very few chances to do so.

: I...will see you there, yes? I will see you later, then.

: Hey, wait-

Option B is just plain rude. Option A it is!

I should go and see what she wants. I'll meet her later.

: You came.

: Yeah, I did.

: I am so happy, thank you...come sit by me.

Game: You take a seat on the swing next to hers and swing gently.

: So...why did you want me to come?

: I...am stressed out at school, and at home I...I just...

: I just wanted to be alone with a friend.

: I see.

: Of course.

Game: You smile at her and your eyes meet for a moment before she shyly looks away.

: Th...thank you so much.

: Of course.

Game: You and Yui talk for about an hour or so.

: I feel so much better now. Thank you for coming. You certainly care.

: It's no problem, Yui.

Really wasn't expecting a Yui scene. Usually she's a bit more distant. The thing that surprises me the most about Yui is how the scene began. Didn't expect to ever see her assert herself.

We got a point of XP for that Yui event. And here's the task progress more clearly. Empty right now and we can only work on this on the weekdays. We catch some sleep for now.

We start working on the culture festival. As they mentioned earlier, we really should've started last semester. But Goon was out for that, so oh well.

You can see what a full week of success does. Our Lit and Science went down a bit, it's difficult to say if Sports and Fashion changed at all and we got a bit of Art and Popularity. Task's like these are less efficient than normal work but it's nice to get some stats out of since we're going to spending too much time on these.

Looks like we're 20%ish done. Pretty fast but that mental stamina drain is heavier than I remember. Our weekends are going to be spent trying to squeeze what stats we can out of our stamina pools. Finishing the festival prep is important for us.

Ah.

:perfect:

An imbalance between physical and mental stamina is always a pain to work with. One more week of work.

Have I mentioned working out recovers mental stamina?

Working out may be expensive in regards to physical stamina but that's fine with me. It's also been a month in game time since the start of this update. Time can fly fast when you've got things to work on.

Monday triggers a new event.

: Oh? For what?

: All your stats seem balanced, Goon. I'm glad your understand the importance of being a well-rounded person.

: Thanks.

: Keep up the good work!

I don't think we're very balanced. On Friday, another random event pops.

...

Game: You rub your hand and look around the room. Everybody is writing quite seriously, except for one person. In the back of the room, Kasumi looks quite bored. The long movements [of?] her pen implies that she is drawing rather than writing. Without giving it much further thought, you turn back to your test and get back to work.

I think I'll talk to Rena.

: Hi, Rena. What'd you think of the test?

Goon might've failed. Or been perilously close to doing so.

: I liked it a lot. It made me rethink some of the things we read recently.

: Oh, really?

Nice, short and I hope there's some XP on the other options.

We're not well-balanced in the least. If I hadn't tried to sneak some Science study in, we'd be doing even worse. Well, we're nearly done with the culture festival. Deadline's in two weeks, so we don't have much time.

On Monday, we get another random event. We had a bit of a dry streak of events recently. Not too many people like us so we get less events.

I figured if she was blinking, this might not look as weird. It turned out worse.

: Something wrong, Naoko? You don't usually look this glum.

There was a tornado through the Philippines in 1968, one in 1990, three in 1994 and one in 2008. I might be reading too much into this but 1994 would make sense for the year. Considering Shira Oka, they probably didn't research this but who knows?

: I feel so useless...there's nothing I can do to help.

: That's not like you. You always think of some way to help.

: Well, I was thinking of organising some kind of school fundraiser to raise money to help rebuild the town...

If you try to help everyone in Shira Oka, you won't have enough time to study or keep yourself up to date. Sometimes, you need to turn people down.

: Yeah, I doubt we would raise enough to do any good.

: I figured it would just be a waste of time... Oh well...

Karmic, I suppose.

We're just one success away from finishing this. Unless we get four fails again, we're fine.

Wish this happened last week, but eh. I'm not sure if four fails would've meant we fail the preparations. And we had some pretty bad luck this time, as well as time working out. I don't think I've ever failed a festival preparation.

Friday's here. Judgement time.

: I bet you are! And proud, too. Look at all these tasty foods.

: They certainly smell heavenly.

The bar on it was green before the icon faded away. We're fine.

Last time we saw the sunglasses was...Update 9 when Alice and Hiroshi were at the beach.

: *sigh*

: Everyone worked so hard to make all this delicious food, too. And everyone's going to work so hard to keep the stand stocked with delicious food...

: It's going to be hard, but I'm sure everyone's prepared for it.

: You're right, Alice-chan. It should go perfectly...

: Yeah! Goon, you did great at all of the work preparing this summer. This is going to be a breeze with you around.

We only got one week off the prep work. Someone better notice that.

: Goon, I can't believe how well you did at all of the sessions. I have no doubt that we'll do great today. Come on, everyone- let's get to the stand.

Well, I'm glad that worked out.

Pretty fast two months, all things considered.

We're uh, a little behind schedule, I suppose. Exams are a month away and we'll be needing like 15's to get a C. Might be a little far off, but we'll see how we do.

Mysticblade

You can get a bit of popularity and art from the Culture Festival. You'd get more for doing their dedicated trainings, but it's not a complete waste of time. The more important thing is that completing makes people like you more. Especially Alice. Since we're looking like we're going for an Alice ending, we do need this.

Naoko just uses weird names for us, no matter what. She called us dear at the end of the date at the beach, even though she barely knew us.

At the moment, it seems like Alice likes us the best ("affection for you isn't too significant"), Yui is still not too sure about us (which is why I was surprised we were seeing her events) and it's hard to tell with Rena. We haven't really made much progress on the friendship part.

Mysticblade

Right, time to get ourselves back on track.

This is unexpected as well.

: Hey, what's up? You look nervous.

: Yeah, well, er...I was kind of, um, wondering...

You're not going to start making fun of us for being awful at math so early, are you?

Hmm...

Well, XP is good and our chances at actually getting an ending are probably garbage. I didn't expect our Lit/Science decay to be so strong or our mental stamina pool to be so small. May as well give this a shot.

: Sure, what's up?

: Naoko and I got into a fight yesterday, and I kind of, er, accidentally said that any idiot can cook and that it's no big deal...

: drat, that's a bad thing to kind of accidentally say to Naoko...

: No kidding. I didn't really mean it...I was just so angry, it came out of my mouth before I realised what I was saying... I feel so terrible...and, um , she was really hurt by it.

: Wow, that's a harsh punishment for something I'm sure she knows you didn't mean...

: I know!

: So what do you need my help for?

: I need you to help me make meals every day. I...er...don't even know the first thing about cooking...

: Well, are you sure she really meant it? Maybe she just said it because she was angry at the time.

: Oh no, she meant it alright. I even shrugged it off at first, and then she said that if I didn't do it she'd tell the entire school embarassing stories stories from when I was little...

: Ouch...

: Alright, let's meet every day after school and we'll whip something up.

: Really? Do you think we can pull it off?

: That sounds perfect! I'll see you after school then!

Well, that was Tuesday. New event pops on Thursday.

This could be good.

: Satsuko, you're so funny! You need to visit more often!

: You think so? Maybe I will, then!

What the hell is Satsuko doing here?!

: Goon, you didn't tell me your cousin was coming up to visit!

: Yeah, it was kind of a SUDDEN visit...

: That's so nice, I love surprises! You must be so happy, Goon.

: Yeah...

: Satsuko, how do you celebrate Christmas in Sweden? That's where you said you're from, right?

: Oh! Er...yeah...

Savour this, Goon.

: (I don't know anything!)

: Er, we don't participate in traditional activities. We just spend a quiet evening at home.

: Oh, I see... Well, what do people usually do?

: Er...

: Er...

: Ah...

: (How was that, Goon?)

: (Right, I'll do that!)

: *sigh*

: So what are you and Goon doing to celebrate?

This is going in a dangerous direction.

: Hmm, not that I know of...

: Hey, you know what would be fun?

: What?

: If we had a party at the school!

I remember this event. This is troubling since it'll take up another day at the minimum.

: Hmm, maybe a New Year's party?

Well, at least we can hang out with Rena in this event. Though, we do have higher priorities right now.

: Clean the school...?

wait no, not this month

: A pre-holiday cleaning party!

uggh

: Do you think students will be interested in cleaning?

: Sure! I'll talk it over with student council...we'll work something out!

Great...

No, this event takes 3 days overall. This is moderately dangerous for us.

: Great!

Bah. We'll see how we go.

Well, we'll be working on helping Kazuki cook for the next bit. Exams? Eh.

Poor fellow. Goon only burns the food. This is surprisingly draining on our mental stamina and doesn't really boost Science. It does help Art.

Thursday 17 November triggers a new event. I'm running out of ways to say that in a new way.

: I'm not making this up, Aya.

: What's going on?

: It's not stupid! Goon's cousin Satsuko thought of it, and I think it's an amazing idea!

: The last thing I want to do is come clean up the school after my mom makes me clean the house!

: How's the event going to take place, Alice?

: What don't you understand? We're cleaning!

: I'm not stupid, Aya. We're going to make it really fun!

: Oh yeah? How?

: Are there going to be games and things like that?

: Absolutely!

: Hiroshi!

: Hey, Hiroshi!

: Hey, if nobody else wanted it then nobody would have voted for it!

: You pressured everybody into voting for it.

: What?! How?!

: You just did.

: You're not making any sense!

: Er, so when is this event taking place...?

Before exams. That is too soon.

: But that's on a Saturday!

: Oh come on, stop whining! We can't do it during the week. It'll be like a party!

I want those 3 days back, drat it

: Grr, this isn't fair!

: What?! You can't do that!

Gotta say, as I saw Alice more and more, I just stopped liking her as much. She's still okay, just not one of the best characters in this game.

: Oh? What do you think?

: I think it's great! I'm so excited about it!

: Hiroshi!

: Yes, I'm glad you guys decided to do something like this! The school deserves a fresh New Year's start like everything else.

: I agree completely. I'm sure this is going to be really great.

: I don't believe you!

: Is everything okay, Alice?

How could I resist?

: He just said he didn't like the cleaning party.

: What?! I did not!

That worked well.

: Ha! Caught in your own trap!

: He, he just heard me wrong!

: You should stick to your own opinions, Hiroshi...

: Come on, Naoko. This loser isn't worth our time- let's plan out the food we'll need for the party.

: Okay...

: Something sweet!

: Heehee, of course! A party isn't a party without lots of sweets!

: Heh, great.

: Later guys!

: Bye!

: .......

: Er, is everything okay...?

: I never thought you'd play dirty, but I see the game's on, now.

: What...?

That's an understatement.

: This isn't over.

: Well, you lied and-

: Naoko's not for you, and if you happen to forget that, my fist will remind you.

Oh dear.

We throw a bit of exercise into our schedule to balance things out but it doesn't go well. Then the party pops up.

: Come on, Aya, it should be fun.

: Oh yeah? How do YOU know?

: Well...

: I do not really mind. Cleaning is not that bad.

Cleaning is a necessary evil, in my eyes. A filthy house is worse than cleaning but it's still :effort:

Did I mention Kiku's family is mad rich?

: You know I never let them into my room.

: Yeah, well, you're crazy.

: *sigh* You would not understand...

It's, um, kind of awkward having people clean your room. My grandparents used to hire some servants.

: Hello, Lorde...

: Hey, what's going on?

: HEY!

: Your relentless whining really gets to me sometimes...

: Grr...

Warning - There's more Hiroshi this update.

: Good, Hiroshi!

: Geez, you bounce back fast...

: How's it going, Lorde-san?

: It's alright.

: Yeah, it should be fun.

: Heh, well, it really should be a good time after all.

: "After all?"

: Wow, that's awesome!

: Hmm, are you sure? I have heard otherwise.

: What are you talking about?

: Well, I seem to have heard that you hated the idea of this cleaning party from the start. And that you wanted nothing to do with it because you thought everyone would hate it.

: Err...

: But I guess you changed your mind when you found out that Naoko liked the idea, hmm?

: Grr...

: That is what I thought.

: She just put the thing in a whole different light, okay?

While LP'ing this game has made me like some characters less, moments like these are some of my favourite.

: Heh...

The noblest of causes.

: Welcome to the first annual New Year's School Cleaning Party!

: I know cleaning can be boring, but everyone knows it had to be done.

: So let's have some fun, okay?

: Right! Here's how the night is going to work. Everyone is going to pick a room and work in a group to clean it. And no slacking off! This is your for the night, and members of the student council will be checking each room after two hours.

Eesh, two hours of cleaning...?

I don't what all the groups are, but I do know the one with Rena. It'll do.

: Yeah, a FABULOUS prize.

: Well, it's alright...I wouldn't call it "FABULOUS"...

: Hiroshi! You have to tell them that or they won't get motivated!

: Fine, be dishonest...

: Oh shut up!

Comedy Hour isn't much at Shira Oka.

: Heehee, sorry about that, guys!

Rena's in the Garden. So let's roll.

: Hey, Rena.

Dude just zoomed in from the right.

: Hiroshi!

: Oh, hey.

: I'll be helping out, too.

: Really? Okay!

: Lorde-san, are you good at doing hard work?

We're not really good at anything. We're okay at Art, maybe.

: Well...I guess I'm okay...

: Thanks.

: I'm sure he'll do a good job, Hiroshi.

: Well, he'd better. I want this garden to be the cleanest spot in the whole school!

: Aww, don't work too hard, Lorde!

: Alright, I'll do what I can...

Our schedule basically melting down has reminded me that Goon is not very good.

: RENA!!

: Did you hurt yourself?

: Ow...I cut my finger while picking up that rusty metal can...

: OH NO! Go clean it out right away or it'll get infected! Hurry!

: Okay. Sorry guys, I'll be right back!

: ...

: You care about her a lot, don't you?

: I think that's really nice.

Can't be a jerk all the time, I guess...

: Thanks.

: No, really. It's nice to see an older brother really care for his sister.

: ...I guess I'm overprotective sometimes, but she's not always that careful.

: Really? She doesn't seem like the reckless type...

: It's not that... It's just that she thinks so differently from everyone else...

: Well, it's her decision.

: Yeah but...I don't know, messing around with that stuff doesn't sound like a good idea.

: Well...I'm sure she'll be okay.

: Yeah...I guess...

: I wouldn't worry about it.

: Hmm, let's take a look at the garden...

: Er, hi Alice...

: What are you doing here?

: I was just checking up on Rena.

: Hmm, you weren't helping them, were you? You know the rules, Hiroshi. Rooms student council members help clean are disqualified! Idiot! That's why we were all working together!

: That's right, he was just checking up on Rena.

Bro code? I dunno, but ratting him out would hurt us too.

: Well, where is she?

: She cut her finger on some garbage so she went to go clean it.

: Oh, I see...

: Heh, no problem...

Without the context, this looks like Hiroshi and Alice are teaming up to laugh at us. Not sure if that's better or worse.

: Well, it's because Lorde-san barely did anything...

We're still Scatterbrained and Lazy. One of those traits is likely giving us this negative outcome.

Grr...

: You guys should clean up a little bit more before heading to the cafeteria for refreshments.

: Fine...

Whoops.

: Come on, Hiroshi, we have more rooms to judge!

: Aww, man...later, Lorde-san.

Fade to black, then Rena's back.

: Hey guys! Where's Hiroshi...?

: He went to help Alice judge the other rooms. How's your finger?

: Heh...

: I just saw Alice! What did she think of the garden?

: She thinks we have more work to do...

I've done this event like 3 times, but I've never failed. Mind you, those were also late-game loops.

If we ever get there, we're going to be the Invincible Super Goon and it'll be great.

: Oh well, let's do a little more cleaning and then go to the cafeteria for some cookies, okay?

: Alright...

: Yes...please enjoy...

: So you guys have been here the whole time?

: Yup! We got out of cleaning by helping set up the refreshments.

There's no option to hang in the cafeteria. So you can't hang out with Yui and Aya for this event.

: It...was still a lot of work... It was not a leisure activity...

: It looks nice.

Aya would pick the second option. Hopefully, we're better than that. Slightly, at the very least.

: Thank you...

: Yeah, we spent a long time decorating. I'm glad you like it!

: I can tell you guys worked hard.

Goon would probably mess this up, no joke.

: Time to announce the winners of the competition!

: Aww...

: Sorry, Rena...

I'd be sad about this but things are going to get a lot worse before long.

: It's okay... we did our best! Thanks for all your help, Lorde.

: Sure.

Maybe in another life.

Hmm, Kazuki's event is going to finish on the 8th, likely and exams aren't going to go well...

Well, we'll deal with that later.

Mysticblade
Oct 22, 2012

Nope. The event took up 3 days and she couldn't be bothered to show up. Not sure we'll ever get a proper revenge though.

Mysticblade
Oct 22, 2012

So, we've got two weeks until exams and Kazuki's thing is due. I was pretty worried things were going south.

But a week full of success in cooking alleviates those. We'll probably be fine to get the cooking done, but I can't say the same for our exams.

Although having the literal last day before the deadline be a fail is a little concerning...

We get a call that Thursday. Getting a call from someone will save their phone number. I know for certain that you can get Hiroshi's, Kiku's and Suzu's number this way. I don't know if you can get everyone, but it's still a significant number of people.

: Hi! Hello, Goon...do you have free time?

: Yeah, I do. Why?

: I wanted to talk to you and Kazuki today...about the cooking I've had him do. Could you please come to my house, dear?

: Alright, I'll be there.

: Bye, dear!

Game: You arrive at Naoko and Kazuki's house.

This is the first time we've been in someone else's house, huh? Kazuki and Naoko aren't the only people with a house. We might be seeing Kiku's soon and we'll see some others if we ever get their endings.

We'll drop by Rena/Hiroshi's place and Yui's.

: Hey, you guys look really happy.

All I wanted. Yoink!

: Originally I made him do it because I was angry with him, but I was really only kidding...

: WHAT?!

: Besides, a girl needs to be pampered every now and then...

: I don't believe you...

: Heh, I'm glad it turned out well.

: Oh?

: Come on, you know I can hardly tell which end of a bowl to put food in... Lorde stayed after school these last few weeks and helped me make the food.

: Oh, that was really sweet of you. Thanks for helping out Kazuki, dear- he would have been in big trouble if the food was bad!

Wait, didn't you call us over since you knew we were helping with the cooking...?

: Hey!

: Have a good night, Goon. Thank you for all of your help!

It's nice to be appreciated.

Exams, huh?

We probably failed Lit. Possibly Science as well. Was it worth it?

We got a point of XP from it as well. Some people may not approve of our falling Lit stat though. Depends on how likely you thought getting an actual ending was for this loop, I suppose.

We go for a bit of studying after the exams to make sure we don't continue to fall behind so much. Sometimes, you'll see other characters trying to help out with these. It'll be either a critical success or fail. These are pretty rare so I'll try to capture them all if they pop up.

This is Thursday, so the day right before getting exam results back.

: Yeah, Aya lent me this one book that's really good!

Oh, ouch. I didn't realise we were that bad.

: Are you serious? Let me guess. A manga, right?

: Uh...

: *sigh* Reading such frivolous literature will not help you succeed in school or in life, Lorde.

: I guess so. What would you recommend?

: You really want to know?

For a modern audience, Count of Monte Cristo feels real difficult to follow. I have no clue about Italy or France in that period but the book reads like you should know these places. Also, it's like 100 chapters long.

What I'm saying is that it is not a good book for beginners or people who don't know much about Europe. I gave up, personally.

: That sounds great!

I did enjoy the Monte Cristo movie though. It didn't randomly segue into some random bandit's backstory for a few chapters.

: Well, I must be going now. Goodbye, Lorde.

Huh. Satsuko won't officially count a D as a fail for now, but it's still annoying.

I think I'll just be using the ledger to show off our grades from now on. We did alright in Art, but we're going to need to pull up that Lit and make sure our other grades don't fall too low. Next Monday triggers another event.

: What day is it?

: Well, today's one of the greatest days of the year!

She really does get excited over the end of school terms.

: Visit my family.

I love a good mystery. Maybe.

: Yeah, a lot of people do that this time of year, especially once New Year's Day hits. Thankfully most of my family is here in Shira Oka, so I don't have to go far to see them. Anyway, there's something I always look forward to at this time of year... Best thing there is.

: What is it?

: Wow, you've really never heard? Hold on a second!

: Oh?

: Oh, here comes Kiku now. Hey, Kiku! Over here! Hey, look, there's Lorde!

: What's going on?

: Nice to see you, Lorde.

: What's up?

We just passed a check here. If Kiku doesn't like you enough, she can decide not to invite you over. It's definitely a possibility for the next few loops and I thought it'd happen here.

: My parents usually go away around that time and I thought it would be nice to start some sort of Christmas tradition with some people at school.

: Hiroshi...?

: Enough, Aya.

: Later, Lorde!

On my first time playing through this game, I got rejected the first 2 or 3 times. Kiku doesn't have to like you much, but if she dislikes you, you're probably not getting in.

On Wednesday, we meet up with Aya again.

: Yeah?

Harsh. You'll get these "you failed" events if you get C or below on a test. B or above triggers the "hey, good job." It's random as to whether they check your Lit, Science, Art or Sports. Hopefully, they pay attention to our Art tests more...

: I did poorly. I didn't fail.

: Ah well.

: Never mind...I'll ask Kiku for notes next time.

You're welcome to copy from us, Aya. Just can't guarantee good results.

Friday finishes up the term with another event.

: Hmm?

: I was talking to Naoko about space food.

This events happens at the end of Year 1 Semester 2 every time. So I've seen this like 13 times.

: Space food?

: Aya wants to prepare food like the type astronauts eat.

: I was reading all about it in a magazine. Like, they have freeze dried ice cream and junk like that. Sounds pretty gross if you ask me.

: Well, you do have to keep in mind the limits of space. Just like how you have to alter recipes for high altitude.

Just checked and yeah, the difference in air pressure messes up baking. You have to make a lot of adjustments to adapt to that. That's pretty neat.

Hmm, we're missing an option here. I guess you get it on the second time going through this event.

: I bet cooking in space is difficult to do.

: I actually don't think they do.

Some stuff from NASA on the topic. You can do it, it just requires plastic bags?

: Then how do the astronauts not starve?

: I think they just take plenty of supplies up there with them, Aya-chan.

: What if you got bored of the food you have?

: Well, I think they give them a variety.

: Even so!

: I guess you would just be stuck with what you have.

: Aww man! Boring.

: Well, break is coming. Going to be off school for a while.

: I still don't see how this is connected.

: And so we were discussing the kinds of foods I could pack.

: I'm personally not very familiar with dehydrating food but it's something I haven't gotten to try yet.

: We could buy a food dehydrator together.

: Oh dear, so expensive! And I've heard that's actually bad for the flavour of the food.

: How can it be? Drying food is drying food.

: Oh, you don't understand.

: Anyway, anyway.

Neither of those are happening, Aya.

: You shouldn't drop out.

: Pfft, thanks, mom. So, that's what I'm doing. How about you guys?

: Aww, how painfully sweet.

: What about you, Goon?

: Oh, I know.

: Know what?

We're not very involved in this conversation, no.

: Not doing something important, like me.

: Teehee!

A single change over a event that'll fire 10 times is not great. We catch some rest until Kiku's party.

Christmas in Japan is less a religious thing and more a general commerical holiday. Christmas Eve is for lovers and they eat KFC a lot on Christmas. Some more info here if you've never run into this before.

Game: You can already hear people happily chatting, and you smell delicious food in another room.

: Yay, Goon's here!

: You're so weird. Yo, Lorde.

: Hello.

: Yeah, whatever.

And here I was feeling so loved. Pity.

Kiku hasn't realised this is our best.

: I'm not?

: I am not one to insult people, but you seem to be...not up to par these days.

I'll get to this next update.

: I will mark your schedule here, so that you'll know when I will evaluate your progress. It's good to be punctual! Anyhow. Perhaps we should get back to the party. Please, enjoy yourself.

Game: You look around to see who you can mingle with at the party. Hiroshi comes up to you.

: I'm surprised that YOU were invited, Hiroshi.

: Me?!

: Kiku doesn't like you at all.

: Yeah, well...

: Heh, I don't think anybody actually likes him.

: But do any of them actually like him?

: I doubt it.

: Everyone always looks so afraid when they're around Hiroshi!

: No kidding...

: It's time to eat, everyone!

: Time to eat...?

: You have really outdone yourself, Naoko. Thank you very much.

Yeah, fried chicken.

: Mmm! I smell a cake baking.

: Oh, you actually might be familiar with this cake, Alice!

: Oh, why?

: Um...

: Oh! It's a coin that's washed and put into the cake batter. When the cake is done, whoever finds the coin in their slice has luck for the year!

: Oh, how interesting...

Game: Everyone eats their fill of Naoko's cooking. You sit back, full and content from such a big meal.

: Aww, you should've saved room for the cake.

: Oh, I always have room for cake!

: But you just said that you're full...

: Are we going to cut the cake?

: Oh, I hope I get the lucky slice...

Game: Naoko cuts the cake into thick, even slices.

: Take the biggest one!

: Hmm...okay, I want that one!

Game: Rena chooses a slice, and digs into it as soon as it falls onto her plate.

: Come on, coin!

: Jeez, you've turned your cake into mush! Stop already, there's no coin in there.

: Aww, no coin...

No clue if there's a check for the second party. I can't remember one.

: Who has the coin?

: Hmm...

Game: Just then you hear Alice yell "I got it! I got it!" from across the room.

: No way, the cake knew that Alice missed home, so it let her have the lucky slice.

: Cakes can't choose things, Rena.

: Ugh, whatever...

: This was a great party, Kiku.

: Heehee, maybe I'll have one next year as well.

: Well, I'm thinking up some cool things too, so let's not think of next year until it comes!

Mm.

Next time, we'll deal with Kiku's fashion training.

Mysticblade
Oct 22, 2012

Fashion D is basically equivalent to wearing a shirt that hasn't been ironed in weeks. Fashion F is basically wearing a shirt with a massive sauce stain on it. Even Kazuki will give us poo poo for being unfashionable at Fashion F.

Mysticblade
Oct 22, 2012

Right, so we had Kiku wanting to help us out with Fashion last time.

Let's see what Goon comes up with...

That's honestly more colour than I usually wear.

Alright, that's just plain terrible even by my standards.

It chews through our physical stamina, doesn't give us any stats and takes a good bit of time. Yet the reward at the end is totally worth it, so we'll shift to focusing on this until it's over.

The New Year ticks over and we meet up with some people on the 2nd.

: Hello, Lorde! I hope everyone had good dreams last night!

: Why do you say that?

: Oh! Lorde, you don't know?

: Know what?

: Yup!

: Why?

: Well, it's supposed to predict what kind of year you'll have.

: That can really happen?

: Of course it can!

: Naoko! What kind of dream did you have?

: Nothing special, really, Rena-chan...

: Hiroshi had a great dream, guys!

This is new.

: Yup!

: What was it about, Hiroshi?

Nice. Better than getting hit by a truck, I suppose.

: That's weird...

: Heh, clearly you have no idea...

: No idea of what?

No idea of anything, really.

Not too much info on that, but this info is legit. Either that or Shira Oka's research consists of looking at wiki pages.

: Really?

: Yes!

: Even an eggplant...?

But why do you not know this already, Goon?

: I had a dream about eggplants last year, but not this year...

: Hmm, well, maybe some of those lucky eggplants will carry over into this year.

: I hope so...

: So what kind of dream did you have this year, Lorde?

: Oh! Hawks are a good symbol but...what happened next?

: Ouch... Must've creacked your head pretty bad, huh?

: Well...then...

: Then what?

: ...Then everyone I know came and laughed at me...

Huh.

: Ouch!

: That's harsh...

I had never seen that specific dream before. I suppose looking at our grades, we're doing pretty awfully. But we're getting a lot of XP, so it's okay.

: Does that mean bad things are going to happen to me this year?

: Sounds like it... I wouldn't want to have a dream like that. Sounds like a curse to me!

: Well, they could...

We're probably not going to have time for extra events like the Culture Festival prep. There's one Culture Festival prep and there'll be another event like this one with Kiku that I'll grab but beyond that, we should try to avoid committing to much. Considering me, I'll probably turn down most stuff except for Kazuki or Rena's. :v:

: How?

: Just try to make changes where you think you need them...

Best way to stop falling behind stat-wise so much is to reject events that'll take up extra time. But sometimes, you don't get a choice to turn them down. There's actually a set of meeting sequences that pushes you into one of the events. Glad we dodged that.

: I'm sure that'll make things better!

He has faith in us. :3:

: Heehee, that's right! If you fail this year, it's clearly your own fault!

: Thanks...

: Don't worry about it too much, Lorde... the first New Year's dream is important, but you can work to make things better.

I don't know if this actually changes anything. I assume it's just a check to see how you're going.

: Alright, thanks...

We continue on with our Fashion > Rest schedule until Sunday.

: Of course I did.

: That's good to hear. After all, classes start again very soon.

Hard to miss the start of school considering there's an event every single semester start.

: Wait...they do?

: How unfortunate. So you didn't get everything done?

: Well...no...

Decent enough date location, don't go there much so I'm pretty sure I'm missing CGs from there.

: They reduced the price during the break so I could afford to go more and go on the wicked rides! But...besides that, er...

: What a pity! I did plenty.

: Yeah, yeah...oh, hey. It's Lorde. Lorde!

You only just noticed us?

: Hello. What's going on?

: Well, er. We were talking about the break.

: Oh?

: She didn't get everything done that she planned.

: Well, I organised all of my special writing paper.

: That's it?

: No, no, not at all. I got a lot of knitting done!

: You knit?

: It NEVER snows here, blockhead.

That is pure Rena. Also, it never snows in my area either, but I'm glad I don't have to deal with shovelling snow.

: *sigh*

: So I take it you didn't do much, Aya?

: Well, that isn't exactly true. I did make great strides towards my goal. I...well, I tried some of the freeze dried food that Naoko made for me.

: Was it tasty?

: If by "tasty" you mean "dry and disgusting", then yes. It was very tasty.

: I guess you're not cut out for all this space travel stuff, huh, Aya?

: Ha, as if.

: Well, if you don't like the food, how would you eat up there? Aya's poor tummy will go grumbly and hungry!

: I'll just tough it out and eat it anyway. Just like how Alice eats Japanese food.

: I don't know. Alice seems to like the food here, Aya.

Japanese is pretty good. Their rice is good, lotus roots are surprisingly good but I could never work up the courage to eat a raw egg.

: She makes a very good point, though, Aya. You would be suffering!

: Aw, it wasn't THAT bad.

: You made it sound like it was.

: Er, well. I guess it was okay. I mean, I'd be in space.

: If you say so...

: Don't worry, you guys. I'm going to make it. I've gotten the food down, I've gotten the reading down... I'm all set to go!

: ...Weirdo. Kiku says the whole thing's silly. She's always being such a dream-squasher.

: Yeah, tell me about it.

: Poor little dreams...

: Knock it off, you. Anyway... well, school caught me off guard. But it's alright. I'm sure I'll be out of there in a few weeks, anyway. I've almost got mom convinced to let me drop out.

: We'll miss you!

I wouldn't.

: Oh, I'll still be around town... before I go into space, anyway.

: NEPTUNE.

: Whatever. I'll see you around.

That marks the start of school. Monday throws us an event, so why not?

Game: She turns quickly and the two of you accidentally run into each other, causing her to bite onto her candy.

: Ow... Oh dear, I think I cut my tongue!

: Is it bleeding?

: A little, not badly... but that's not it, I'm afraid.

: Hmm?

: I'll be right back.

Game: She goes to get a drink of water before returning to her place in line.

: Oh dear... I hope this doesn't affect my palate! I'll be lost without it.

: What do you mean?

: I'm sorry, I'll taste everything for you!

This event always makes me giggle. Goon just goes from being all "oh, ok" to "MERCY".

She calms down quick though...

: I mean it!

: No, that's fine. I think it'll probably heal soon.

: That's good.

Good event, nice and short.

Anyway, we'll finish Kiku's stuff off next time. It's due on the 2nd, so we can probably make it.

Mysticblade
Oct 22, 2012

This is a random event. Once per loop, but we'll be wanting to see this again in the future.

Game: You notice a very long line in front of one of the stores.

I should go talk to her.

: Just running some errands. How about you?

: I'm waiting in line so I can buy a raffle ticket.

: The grand prize of the raffle is a ticket to visit the habitat, which will normally be closed to the public, for a day.

: Sounds like a good cause and a nice prize.

: Oh no! I didn't realize what time it was! I have to run home before I'm late! I hope I can make it back in time! Bye Lorde!

: Hey, wait...

Too late, she's gone...

I might as well stay in line and get a ticket.

Game: You wait in line for about half an hour before you get the chance to buy a ticket.

Yes, luck does affect the outcome of this scene.

: We'll know in just a moment. They're about to make the announcement.

Game: The announcer names the winning ticket numbers: 101928, 828394, and 284939.

: Did we win?

Game: You look down at your ticket and see number 449391.

If we had better luck, we could've gotten a better result. Best luck gives us one of the most useful things in the game. A bit like the reward from the Kiku event.

: Oh, boo.

Hopefully, we'll see the good outcomes of that event.

Regardless, we're done with Kiku's training a week ahead of time. Good news, especially since I put stats on the sideline again. Pretty sure we'll not going to pass enough exams this loop to go the end of 3rd year, even though failing those exams is a bit difficult.

: Hey guys!

: Hey...

: You seem down, Kazuki.

: Ugh, Naoko didn't pack me enough lunch again...

I remember that feeling vaguely. I mean, I had to pack my own lunch after primary school, but I remember it, sort of.

: What did she pack you?

: That's not enough?!

: Well, no... I guess I kind of have a big appetite...

: I'll say...

: Oh, how sad...

: Oh, hey Rena...

: What'd she say?

Asparagus, the Japanese pet fish...? Seems a little out of place.

: Er, what does that mean, then?

: It means that I can contact his spirit after all this time!

: Sounds weird to me...

: I'm not sure I understand...

: It's okay, Suzu. No one really understands Rena...

: No, it's not that. I don't think I clearly understand fortune telling...

: Hehe, that's okay. Most people don't understand it properly.

: What is it, then?

Like how I can predict that we're not going to end up with an ending this loop but we'll get tons of XP.

: I still don't get it. Everyone behaves differently but since the actions are unpredictable, how could one predict the future in any possible way?

: Hmm...

: I don't really get fortune telling. It's all just a waste of money.

Looks like Goon doesn't appreciate the art of swindling folks.

: Hmm...

: Just let me show you, Suzu.

: Fine, I would like to see.

The next day, we trigger the second part of that event.

Game: Rena warmly greets you all, looking eager to pass on her knowledge to others.

: Welcome!

: Thanks...

: Should we sit down?

: Yes, of course!

: So, what will you be doing?

: I'm going to read your palm, Suzu.

: Read my palm?

Game: Rena grabs Suzu's hand and begins to gently trace the lines in her palm with the tip of her finger.

: Hmm...

Game: Suzu seems a little uncomfortable, but suddenly Rena seems troubled.

: ...

: Something wrong?

: How could that be possible?

: And?

: There's just no feeling from them... it's so bizarre...

: No... it's just confusing... I've never encountered something like this before...

: Hmm, maybe the future just can't be predicted.

: Agreed!

: No! It can be predicted! Something's just wrong with your hand...

: I think it's perfectly fine...

: I guess we're done here...

It had to be you, didn't it?

: Hey, what's everybody doing in here?

: Rena's teaching Suzu about fortunes.

: No, she wasn't able to determine anything at all.

: Psh, figures...

: If you don't want to believe in it, then you don't have to be here, Aya!

: Fine, I know when I'm not wanted...

: I wish I could have gotten you guys to believe...

: Sorry Rena...

: Looks like logic wins this one.

Goon, you're nearly failing Science.

1 XP for 2 days of events but no stat checks is fine. We get a bit of reading done but Aya bugs us again on Friday.

: Hey Lorde. What's-

Game: She sniffs the air thoughtfully.

: Is there something wrong?

: Uh.. oops. I must have used the wrong shampoo this morning!

Goon, it's fine to use floral shampoo's. Although this is coming from a guy who actually likes flowers...

: Haha, weird... how do you even make a mistake like that?!

: I guess I was tired and grabbed the wrong bottle.

: Good point. He would sure have something to say about this.

: You should take better care of yourself.

This event can happen randomly when your Fashion is too low. There's a few different characters who will yell at you for different stats. For Fashion, Aya, Naoko and Kazuki will point it out. Yes, you can rebuked by the nerd for being unfashionable.

Luckily, it doesn't change our stats or anything. On Saturday, we finish Kiku's training.

The cursor leaves behind a trail of sparkles. I'd like to re-iterate that.

: Hmm.

: Yes?

: I just wanted to tell you this.

We've had a green bar in that for a week but it's nice to hand it in.

: You clearly have a taste for fashion.

ahahahaa

XP gotten but that's not quite the entire reward from this event.

Feels like we haven't spoken to Satsuko in a while but we spoke to her 3 updates ago. I dunno, she was in a lot of stuff at the start.

: Thanks.

: And there's a reward for you for all of this.

Goodbye, basic Groom command. Hello, Uber Fashion.

: Keep up the good work, Goon! It's really showing your effort.

So, I held off from explaining last time but what we just unlocked is a upgraded form of our fashion skill. In this case, it's Uber Fashion replacing Groom.

Upgraded trainings are generally much more powerful than their basic trainings. They take the same amount of stamina but have much stronger effects on your stats. So with Uber Fashion unlocked, we'll have an easier time keeping on Fashion if we put some time into it. We're not going to really keep up this run but it'll be very helpful in the future.

There's "Uber" versions of each of your basic actions. I've only unlocked these before:

Art/Music > Origami - Rate of Art/Music improvement goes up a lot. But the minor bonus to Fashion goes away. Still a net positive and quite easy to get. You need to finish Rena's route to get this and we'll unlock after we finish Rena's route. It's why she's a good choice for first route.

Exercise > Swimming - Rate of Sport improvement also goes up a lot. I've easily gotten 5 levels in sport from one week of training. On an end-game character, I've gotten 8 levels from one week. Stupidly good. You get it by having your Sports high enough when they come to sign up people for the swim club. Unlike other uber trainings, it's only around until the end of swim season, which is why there's an event where Aya complains about it. We're not getting into the team for a while.

Exercise also has the inferior version called Towel Manager. Don't use Towel Manager, there's no point. None of the other trainings have inferior versions.

Chat > Suave Chat - More Popularity, Fashion and Literature. Consumes less mental stamina than studying Lit so I sometimes use this to get a bit of extra Lit when I don't have the stamina. Clear upgrade even though it's not as strong as the others. You can start the training for this if you fail to get a Valentine's Day gift from a girl. It might be 1st or 2nd year exclusive, I'm not sure.

Rest > Meditate - Holy hell, this basically doubles your physical and mental stamina and boosts your recovery rate on top of that. to like 2.5x. If there's any one upgraded action you want, it's this one. When the event with Rena and the butterflies in this update triggers, if you have maxed Luck, it'll trigger another event in a month or two where you can start training. Rena really is helpful.

Supposedly there's also Literature > Cram Session from Alice. I hear you can get this by studying Lit like a mad man at the start of the year.

There's also meant to be Science > Robotics from Kazuki. Similiar to Alice but you study Science like mad.

Never unlocked Cram Session or Robotics but if you guys want to try for them next loop, we can.

Also, we say good-bye to a dear, dear friend.

The uber trainings have different animations.

Mysticblade
Oct 22, 2012

We will probably not have enough XP to max out Luck for quite a bit. The Blessed quirk costs like 20 on top of the cost of the second-tier(12).

It's probably more important to boost our vital statistics first. Boosting those makes our bases and our growth rate higher so we can actually finish endings. Endings have a good chunk of XP in them, so finishing one makes the next route easier.

Mysticblade
Oct 22, 2012

Yes, we're actually up to 10 XP. It won't take too long to get those last points, since there's plenty of events we haven't seen yet.

Mysticblade
Oct 22, 2012

Well, we'd just finished off Kiku's fashion training. We're falling a bit behind in terms of our studies, but we'll manage.

That event with Aya and our shampoo does have a name. There's a few different variations like I've shown off, but this makes it pretty clear that our Fashion is not up to par. At the start of this loop, I thought we'd be fine but I don't think we can keep Fashion up to par if we want to pass tests and get XP.

Oh well. Monday throws us an event.

: Hey, Satsuko- what're you doing here?

: Is that any way to greet me...?

: Oh, geez...I didn't mean anything by that...

: ...

: Gotcha.

: ...

: Anyway, like I was saying.

: Oh, right.

Getting a gift from your first year's Valentine is a bit difficult. You need to be much better than our Goon. It's not anything to worry about too much.

: Really...?

: Oh, no!

All the guides say so, Satsuko says so, I say so...

Pretty much a consensus on our current Goon. We'll stop being a loser eventually, I promise.

: What?!

: None of the girls like you! We're such failures!

I'll check in with Satsuko at the end of this update about how people think of us.

: How's it make YOU a failure...?

: ...ah...Well... It is partially my fault...

: Gee...thanks.

: Just no girlfriend, huh?

: Right on!

: Great...

: Just you watch.

Hmm, something about Valentine's day and doing poorly...

I haven't shown these off in a while, have I?

Critical fail right there. We get another event on Monday.

I wonder what that flyer is for...Oh, a writing contest.

Game: WRITING CONTEST!!! Submit an essay arguing onee side of a topic that is important to you. Winning entry will be in published in "Shira Oka Weekly!"

Triple exclamation marks? Our local magazine is a weekly magazine?

: Are you entering that contest?

: I don't really see the point.

: What do you mean?

I'll change my opinion on Goon when he gets good.

: Isn't it a good thing to have strong beliefs?

: But the idea of debate is to inspire your own beliefs in people to get them to see your point of view.

: So?

: So that means that if you do a good enough job, you would have helped open someone's mind to something new.

: ...

: So maybe you should reconsider and enter the contest.

Another event after that one.

: I guess I really don't have any friends...

: Yeah...sad but true.

: Well...Kazuki didn't do well either.

: Anyway, we thought we'd hang out with you. Us guys gotta stick together, right?

: Heh, right.

: I just wanted... A little box of candy from someone...

: Kiku, I bet...

: Ahh...

: Heh!

Good job, Kiku.

: Wow, really? You got burned.

: If you say so...

: Hehe...

: Thanks, guys. I feel better already.

: Well, you know what your problem is, right?

: Er, no.

: What is it?

: I don't think that's a fair claim.

: But it's true.

Ah, a new super training to work towards... Well, we need 7 or 8 F's before we get sent back for failing in school, so have room.

...My standards for Goon keep dropping. Kind of depressing.

: Only on school days, though. I have better things to do with my time outside of class.

Translation - We have time to rest on weekends. Schedule for this should be lighter than Kiku's fashion training.

: Thanks.

: 'Course. That's what we're here for ...right?

: Right...

Well, we'll need to start that. Rest of the week's science goes well and then we have another event on Saturday. Though does it count as a new event if it's just the continuation of another event?

: Hey Kasumi, have you changed your mind about the writing contest?

: Well, I wrote something... I haven't decided yet if I want to send it in or not.

: What do you have to lose?

: I don't think it's any good.

: Can I read it?

: You shouldn't waste your time on it.

We're already wasting our time on everything, let's waste some more.

: It's okay, I want to know what your wrote about.

: Alright...

Poor Lit kicks in here.

: Well...?

: Uh... it's good.

: Well, it's a paper...

: If you weren't really interested, then why did you offer to read it?

: Well I guess... I guess I just don't understand it.

That's a tough essay to comprehend. You'd need something like B Lit to get the good result of that event, possibly A. We're not going to get that one for a while.

Training commences.

Mission success.

Jerk.

There are no critical successes for these training events. Or I've never seen one. Could be either, really. March 5 has another event.

: Goon, you know what time it is, right?

: Huh? Well... early afternoon, right?

: No, no, no! I mean, do you know what holiday it almost is?

: Um...

: Don't tell me you forgot!

: Oh... right...

Ha ha.

: Ahh, so romantic.

: No... I didn't.

: Well... then I guess it doesn't matter... We'll both be loners this year, Goon... no worries here. I wasn't looking forward to seeing you have a date for the holiday or anything... ah well.

Well, at least we can hang out with some people on Monday.

: I made myself the BEST lunch today! It's got everything I like!

: Oh?

: What did you make?

: Ugh, those fries are so bad for you... you should take better care of yourself, sweetie.

: Who cares! They're the most delicious thing in the whole world!

: It's so messy. Kind of...dirty.

: That's half of the fun!

: Can I try some, Alice?

: Sure!

Game: Alice hands you her lunch box. You try a few of the fries.

: Hey, this is delicious!

: I'll have to get the recipe...

: Hey, what's that gooey stuff all over your rice, Naoko?

Game: Alice leans in for a closer look.

: Hmm- UGH! That smells horrible! Eww, so gross.

I had a chance to try natto once. I did not try it.

: Heehee, you get used to it.

: I never really liked natto...

: It's fermented soybeans, Alice. Very good for you.

: Just try some.

: It looks slimy enough to clog my throat... looks like a nasty glob of something or other.

: Oh silly, just try a few beans. It's not really that bad.

: Yes, just try it.

: Sure, I'll have a mouthful.

Game: You eat a mouthful of natto but can't conceal the look of displeasure from your face.

: You're so brave, Goon!

Cowardice is not one of our quirks. I mean, neither is Bravery but...

: Blegh, that was hard to swallow...

: Good luck...

: Alright, here I go...

Game: Alice cautiously takes a bit of natto. She doesn't seem too happy...

: Well?

: Heh, I guess it does have a weird texture...

: I can't say I want to have it again, but I'm glad I tried it.

: That's okay. It's not for everyone.

: Yeah, at least you tried it.

Same.

We're one point off getting the next level of Luck quirk. We'll get the next point of XP off Hiroshi's super training so that's pretty soon.

Right, I'll get those relationships.

Characters:
  • Alice - Romantic feelings are developing. Also a good friend.
  • Aya - Absolutely no interest. Doesn't even consider us a friend. Last time we spoke to her, she laughed at our floral shampoo.
  • Hiroshi- Not interested. Not much of a friend. This is likely because we're on good terms with Alice.
  • Kasumi - Not really interested. Not a friend, but she doesn't dislike us. Satsuko worries about us when we talk to Kasumi...
  • Kazuki - Not really interested. Friendship is underdeveloped.
  • Kiku - No feelings for us. Not much of a friend. Made fun of Hiroshi so she's still great.
  • Naoko - Feelings are developing in the right direction. Friendship also in the right direction. Naoko is friendly, so this isn't too surprising.
  • Rena - Doesn't think of us romantically. Friendship hasn't really gone anywhere. Might be our awful Lit hurting our relationship here.
  • Suzu - No romantic interest. Not convinced of our capabilities. A fair assessment and she doesn't think of us as a close friend.
  • Yui - No romantic interest. Not much of a friend.
Man, I wish I had a sliding scale or actual names for these values.

Oh well. If you have any suggestions for where we should put our points, speak up.

Personally, I wouldn't go for quirks now since we need the raw stats more so, but it's still an option.

Unless you want to go for the Charmed quirk which is 15 points. That's less than expected but it's still a bit too much for us to go for right now. Encyclopaedic is also out for costing 20 points.

So we can go Determined at 10, Attentive at 8 or vital stats. 4 points for a point of Intelligence/Fitness, 2 for Creativity and 6 for Charm.

Not sure how Art is holding up okay when Creativity is our one vital statistic at 1.

Yeah, Suave Chat and Uber Fashion are not particularly useful. It's probably Meditate as the strongest. I'd like to get Robotics and Cram Session at some point since Lit and Science are the hardest stats to keep up. The mental stamina drain on those two is immense and it makes it difficult to keep them both up.

In other news, I should have some more free time in the next 2-3 weeks. Hopefully I can avoid taking 2 weeks to get out an update.

Right, we're back here again. One week from exams and that Lit stat is looking perilously low.

...Well, we can afford 8 F's before we get sent back, I think. We've only got 7 sets of exams left. If we focus on Science, maybe we'll make it through. Maybe not.

Whatever happens, we'll still have a lot of events.

: Why don't you believe me?!

: Oh come on, Rena...

: But it's true! I wouldn't lie to you!

: I wonder what's up...

: Oh, hey Naoko. What's going on with those two?

Uh...

: Sure, what is it?

Up and at 'em, Goon.

: Wow, can I try it?

: Ugh, what's that smell!

: Stinky!

: That's disgusting...

: I see nothing wrong with the smell.

: Hey, I'm just being honest.

: I was just being honest, too.

: Anyway, what were you and Rena arguing about, Hiroshi?

: Ugh...

: Look!

: She thinks she invented some kind of love potion...

Well, this is getting dangerous.

: How does it work?

: Whoever drinks it will fall in love with the first thing they see!

: First "thing"?

: Hmm...

: Oh come on! It's just grape soda!

Game: Hiroshi grabs the bottle from Rena.

: Do you really want to take the chance, Hiroshi?

: Here, I'll prove it.

: Be careful! Close your eyes when you drink it and keep them closed until you're ready to look at whatever you want to fall in love with!

: Here it goes...

: WAIT!!!

: Hey, what the?! What's the matter with you?

: I just saved your life! I saw you had some weird bubbly thing in your hand from Rena so I knew I had to stop you from whatever crazy thing she thought up!

: I already drank it, you dummy!

: It's nothing bad, Aya. It's a love potion.

: So Hiroshi, what was the first thing you saw?

: I don't know. Aya ran into me just as I was opening my eyes.

: Hahaha!

: But it doesn't matter, because this stupid thing won't work anyway. Here you go.

Game: Hiroshi tosses the bottle to Rena as he leaves. Aya still can't seem to stop laughing.

: It does too work...

: Hiroshi must have seen something, Rena.

: You really think so?

: Sure. Just keep your eyes peeled and figure out what he fell in love with.

Goon felt awfully chatty there. After that is White Day.

: Nobody got me a Valentine's present! What was I supposed to do?

: Um...

: Why? If I didn't get a Valentine's gift it's obvious nobody likes me.

: Oh...

: Oh... :(

: Oh, Goon! It's all my fault!

: What?

: I'm supposed to be guiding you and... and I failed! I'm so sorry you didn't get a good White Day!

: Calm down, Satsuko, it's alright...

: No, no it's not! Can't you see? It's not right at all...

It's perfectly possible to still get an ending when if you don't get a Valentine's day gift the first time. It's a little more concerning if you get nothing in second year though. For us? Probably a bad sign.

We could've used a bit more time to study but events like us, apparently.

Eep. Tests go off without any complications, so that went alright, at least. On Sunday, an event chain finishes off.

: Hey Rena, how are you doing?

: I knew it would.

: Huh? What happened then?

: Just look at what Hiroshi's eating!

: Ugh, I can smell it from here. It must be that blue cheese octopus casserole...

I'm... sorry, Hiroshi.

On a brighter note, that's the last point of XP we need for Lucky!

:toot:

Odd.

: Oh dear, isn't it interesting how we make friends throughout our lives? I knew high school would be a really interesting time for me, but I never knew I would make such strong bonds with people.

Ah, I know what this is.

: Rena and Alice do seem like good friends.

: Oh my, they're the absolute best.

: I can only hope that we have more opportunities to get to know each other. Maybe I'll even make you your very own homemade bento one day, teehee!

I'll defer the explanation to the end of the update but the gist of this is that Naoko is starting to fall for us. Odd, but we have been seeing a lot of her.

The phone call took up a day so technically this is our second event of the week.

Maybe I should walk with her.

: Hey, Yui!

: Hmm?

: Hey, want some company?

: No thank you...

: Come on, isn't it lonely to walk by yourself all the time?

The second option sounds like it'd advance the event but it also feels like the creeper option. So...

: Okay, if you insist.

We're just finishing up Hiroshi's super training. It's due this weekend but we were pretty much done with it before the exams.

Ah, right.

It's not a F. Science was D, Art was C, Sports was C. I suspect we were pretty close to getting a B in Art. We were at 28 Art and 20 Sports.

We finish up Hiroshi's training.

Today is when he's going to evaluate how well I did at learning, right?

: What's going on?

: So. About the whole... talking to people thing.

: Well, I tried my hardest.

: I'd say. It showed.

Brief fade to black, then...

: Satsuko, what are you doing here?!

: Don't worry, I'll be quick.

: This new chat activity is leaps and bounds better than the old one you had, so you can use it from now on to get better results than you had before.

Standing in the middle of a field and waiting for someone to come and swoon over you is a little ineffective, I agree.

: Oh... and be nice to Hiroshi for a while, at least, will you? Since he helped you out well on this. It's the least you could do.

On Monday, we get another event. You know, I kind of hope the rate of events slows down in the holidays. Otherwise, I'll take like 50 updates to finish this loop. This is update 18, by the way.

: Huh?

: Oh, Alice...

: Oh? What is it?

: It's really hard. Clear your mind of everything first, okay?

We're done for. Goon can't answer something that hard.

: Okay...

: Okay, here we go.

: Your phone number.

Any dumbass can shoot down Aya, and we're already cool.

: Hey, great answer! It just so happens I'm offering a special deal on my number right now!

: Oh? What is it?

: Err...

: Heh, I'm only kidding.

: Sure.

I need to remember to start calling people. We've had Naoko's number for quite a bit, actually.

So yeah, two ways to get someone's phone number. Either by them calling you, or by them giving you their number. We got Naoko's through the first method but Alice's here is the second method. We can still see the event where someone gives you their phone number even if we have them, so we'll see Naoko's eventually.

Wednesday pops up.

: Oh... well...

: You shou... should not disregard artwork.

: Oh?

: Alright. I'll try to stop and study more.

This was originally an Art run, but the decay for the Intelligence based stuff is worse than I remember. I guess that sort of hurt our time on Art.

: Good...

oh come on, we already had an event yesterday

....

Argh! I knew I forgot something this morning...

: Hello, Rena...

: Oh, it's nothing.

: Come on, what's wrong? You can always tell us.

: I just forgot my lunch, that's all.

: Goon!

: Aww, that's sad... here, take some of mine!

: You should eat, Rena. He can have the rest of mine.

We've became strangely popular, considering what kind of Goon we are.

: But you barely ate any of your lunch, Naoko.

: Oh, I always have a huge breakfast, so I never eat all of my lunch anyway.

: I wouldn't feel right eating all of your lunch...

: How about I give him half of mine and you give him half of yours, Naoko?

: It's fine, I insist!

: Or faint from hunger...

: Well, I suppose I could have a little more bread...

Game: Naoko reaches into her bag and pulls out a glass jar filled with a translucent green substance.

: Hmm, interesting...

: What is it?

: Hehe, I don't want to ruin the surprise! Here, taste it!

: Here goes nothing...

Game: She spreads some jam on a cracker and offers it to you. You try your best to enjoy it, but something about it is strangely unpleasant to you.

Not sure if this event can be affected or we're always going to dislike the jam.

: Eh, it's alright I guess...

: Oh? You don't like it?

: I guess I'm just not that crazy about the flavour.

: Too sweet? Not sweet enough?

: No, it's nothing like that...

: Whatever fruit is used just doesn't have a pleasing flavour...

: Oh...

: What kind of jam is this, anyway?

: It's green papaya jam from the west coast of Africa.

: Well, I'm glad I was able to try something so unique, though.

: Me too.

Rena, when did you have the jam...?

Let's finish up the week.

: So, Goon.

: Yes?

: You're pretty far into high school, you know. It's close to a break, after all. You'll be starting year two.

: Not yet...

: Well, why not? Being unsure about yourself is just downright unacceptable at this point of life, Goon. You need to make the most of every moment.

Time passes by quickly in Shira Oka... when you're playing without recording or writing these up. Makes you realise how many events are in a normal loop.

: You need to focus on your goals or before you know it, all of high school will have entirely passed by and you'll be left nowhere...

This is an early loop. The only way of getting an ending is commiting HARD and even then, we're probably not pulling an ending off this loop. But I think our chances in the next loop are pretty good and loop 4 will be much easier.

: Oh, that won't happen.

: We can only hope... I always worry. Oh well. I guess we should just finish up break and go from there.

Mmm.

It's a nice point to end things but let me just explain something first.

Naoko just called us up and spoke to us about how she appreciates us. So I'll check with Satsuko about Naoko's opinion of us.

Feelings developing in the right direction and so is our friendship.

Uh, that's the same as last time... But the call means that we've passed some certain value of affection. This is just the first out of a possible four. When someone's feelings for you hit a certain point, you might get a call like this from them.

This is the first one, so it doesn't mean much aside from "yo, they're into you". The second call is more significant. There's a good chance you'll get a Valentine's day gift at that tier of affection. Each character has their own speeches for these. We won't see everything, but we'll see most of these. The third call is basically a good sign you're going into their ending and if you get the fourth, you don't need to worry about getting them to like you. The fourth call is pretty difficult from my memories and I can only recall getting one from Kazuki. So they're might not actually be that many for everyone.

Oh well. Part of this LP is trying to figure out stuff and write it down somewhere for reference. We'll see what happens.
