Speaking of doomsday devices, the Russians actual did build one called "Dead Hand' and it's probably still in use today. The original idea was for it to be an automated nuclear launch system that monitored stuff like ground vibrations and radiation to determine if the US had attacked the USSR and killed all the command and control that would have been able to respond with their own launches. Had the system determined that was the case, it would automatically launch all of Russia's remaining nukes wired up to the system at the United States. Luckily for the world, Soviet leadership decided it was too dangerous and inserted human checks into the system. So now apparently there is a bunker somewhere with three dudes who control the whole thing. If they get the go ahead then they launch.
