Game Thread

:siren: I am not accepting apps for this game. My players have already been selected: Poultron, Mortify, A Bug, Serviette, Plutonis and Mirthless. :siren:

In the year 2026 the hot new global gaming trend is Virtual Reality! The advent of new technology makes VR more immersive, less space-intensive, better suited to gameplay and most importantly, more affordable! Many games now subtly interact with Human neurochemistry, all 100% safe and rigorously tested. At the head of the VR trend is Japan's most popular MMO, Digital Devil Worlds, an exciting exploration of the Human psyche in which content is generated off an infinitely complex set of assets tied to user preference and activity! What start as characters exploring pre-made developer worlds soon blossoms into user-generated content where one person's mindscape becomes the Player Vs Environment dungeon of the week and a system of rigorous Player vs Player combat drives power struggles and turf wars once the intrusions are discovered! At the most basic level players attempt to raid a mindscape and seize a great treasure at the end tied to the owner's own strength. The owner may customize defenses for when they are offline and even lead their own defense when online!

With a sliding power scale where even the highest level player is in danger if swarmed by competent, coordinated lowbies it has become more important than ever for players to form social bonds and stick together with guilds! These groups join territory and become dynamic power blocs that change constantly, the greatest guilds innovating the deadliest and most lucrative raids! So it is that you apply to the Red Panda Appreciation Society, Guild Sign <Ailuridae>: a casual group of newbie helping mid-range players led by an aspiring high level guild master who does not seek a competitive power bloc but rather a safe group for fun supportive play and socializing. They lead tame but successful low to mid range raids and maintain an "all in good fun" relationship with even the biggest, strongest guilds.

Wait, wait! Don't forget that as a freshman entering high school this year that you will also need to combat social pressure, intense studies and extra-curricular activities at Naoki Academy! You've lived all your life in a small, cozy suburb between two cities, the big city of Kobe and the Tatsumi Port Island. Although you may be familiar with a few of these other players you'll be meeting tons of new people soon. Will you lead a rich social life and pursue your hopes and dreams or play it cool to dedicate more time to the Devil Worlds? The choice is yours but you'll always have enough time to participate in both! The Guild Application wants you to tell them about yourself IRL... seems this is one of those apps that screens out the completely socially inept, or at least the intentionally rude!

But first you need to create your Persona, or in-game Digital Devil Worlds Avatar! This is how everyone will see you in-game and is said to be a representation of your very psyche based upon data lifted from your actions in just the tutorial! Wow! Some people say it's all random based on profiles like "aggressive" "passive" or "takes no damage" but it seems no two Persona are alike! As you log into the formal game world after the offline training you fade into a giant cylindrical room colored wall to wall in a magnificent blue. Shadows cast by nothing mask the points where the walls meet the floors and standing at attendance are an infinite number of Humanoid shadows dressed in matching dark blue, each standing ready and holding an elegant grimoire in one hand. In the center of the room sits a strange hunchbacked man in a tidy black suit. His ears are pointed, his eyes bulging, his white hair receding and his nose enormous, nearly a foot long. He adjusts the immaculate white gloves he wears and your camera is adjusted to a sitting eye to eye level as the options for chargen spread before you, dozens of menus promising you'll spend a a pleasant hour or so here.

His voice is rich and cultured as he greets you: "Welcome to the Velvet Room."

Chargen

First thing's first, in real life you are Human! You are probably not actually a gallant knight, wicked magus or enigmatic courtesan. You are a completely normal and mortal high school student who lives in a house with your family. Although your Player and Avatar share stats they do not share the same sense of scale: an Intelligence 20 Wizard may be a genius capable of altering time online. His player is still simply a very studious and intelligent person offline.

Player:
Race: Human
Must have Character Art
Open to alternative rules*
Starting Gear: A Darling Smart Phone and a VR Capable PC.

Avatar:
A Screen Name! A limit of 16 Characters. i.e. "Great Man" "DaintyDame" "Noob_Killer" or "Unoriginal 97"
Avatar may be any Humanoid figure you can imagine and find art for or you may simply recreate yourself in the game. Please use art for both if they differ.
Level 3
Point Buy 22 (Standard)
Races: Any
Bonus Feats: 2
Theme and Background: YES
Inherent Bonuses: NO
Dragonmarks: NO
Starting Gear: Standard. Level 4 Item, Level 3 Item, Level 2 Item. 520 Gold.

*I have a back-up system or two in mind if somebody's character idea has them playing something that wildly contrasts with who they are offline. A jock playing a caster, a nerd playing a big warrior, anything where your stats don't quite line up right between the two. Post or contact me if this is the case. If it doesn't come up then hey, streamlined!

Skills

Due to the nature of the game, several skills are updated to make them usable or more useful, or to give you a quick heads up that they may not work as well. I.E. Dungeoneering becomes valuable even in the modern world and we recognize that Thievery is significantly harder to do inside the context of a modern video game.

Arcana: Offline: Intense fascination with the occult. Basically useless(or is it...? Limited)
Online: Understanding of game effects and min-maxing. (Updated)
Dungeoneering: Both: Practical Knowledge of Architecture, Electronics, Machinery and Computer Use. (Updated)
Diplomacy: Online: Attempt to friend invite or group invite someone. (Alternative Use)
History: Online: Understanding of game lore.
Intimidate: Online: Use mad bantz to establish rivalries and grudging respect with others. (Alternative Use)
Nature: Online: Ability to forage for snacks and energy drinks. (Limited)
Religion: Offline: Intense fascination with the spiritual. Basically useless(or is it...? Limited)
Online: Understanding of Guild/Clan organization and standards. (Updated)
Stealth: Online: Same, through use of scenery and understanding of assumed PoV of others(PvP) or Mob behavior(PvE) (Updated)
Streetwise: Online: Understanding of individual player's reputation. Limited understanding of Guild/Clan.
Thievery: Online: Barred in most cases due to impossibility of physically handling code. May be used in conjunction with Charisma Skills at best. (Limited)

Family

I'm also up for co-op backgrounds where two PCs are related.

I won't force anyone to use these tables but I'm hoping for some diversity in home life among players. If you use these tables then just think of it as another touch of reality: you can't choose your family, after all! Once you've rolled the basic outline I leave the details to you.

Parents: Roll 1d6
1-3: Both Parents
4: Father Only
5: Mother Only
6: Other(Loner, Adopted, etc)

Siblings: Roll 1d8
1-2: Only Child
3: 1 Younger
4: 1 Older
5: 1 Younger, 1 Older
6: 2 Younger
7: 2 Older
8: Other(Stand-in, Other Supportive Figure, etc)

Other Relatives: Roll 1d7
1-3: No Change
4: Grandfather lives with
5: Grandmother lives with
6: Both live with
7: Other

Home Situation: Roll 1d4
1-2: Average
3: Poor
4: Well Off

How much or how little you detail your family members is up to you.

Systems

Combat: Every PC will always have their own Persona to start which will be relatively neutral in stats and functions. Think of it as your Class. From there you may bond and share the powers of a second Persona from a stable shared by the party. This supportive Persona can modify your stats, grant new strengths and even weaknesses. They can vary from subtle to dramatic, providing immense boosts or total immunity but also risk seeing you destroyed by a canny foe who can identify your Achilles' heel. Support Persona cannot normally be switched in the field so one should mind that they don't take a Fire Weakness Persona into a volcano dungeon.

Each Player has 2 Fortune Points that refill after every Encounter. These function as Action Points but only allow you to use Powers the Support Persona has. I.E. John the Blackguard with Support Persona Pixie wants to use his Blackguard At-Will Power twice. He can burn an Action Point to do so, but AP are rare so he should think about the value of using it. In the same fight, John also wants to use his Persona to batter a distant foe with Ice Spells. His Support Persona Pixie can do that once per round(so twice per encounter) by using Fortune Points.

A regular Combat Round would go Standard, Move, Minor. Burning an Action Point lets you do any one extra action: Two Standards, Move, Minor. Two Moves, etc! Works as normal. With a Fortune Point it becomes Standard, Move, Minor, Fortune. The Fortune Act must be related to the Support Persona i.e. Pixie can Heal or use Ice Magic. And if you combine both... Standard, Standard, Fortune, Move, Minor becomes possible! This means John can use his Blackguard Daily 1, Blackguard Daily 5 and then top it off with an icy blast from Pixie for a massive nova! But if John gets into a bad spot he cannot use his Fortune to say, Move twice.

Don't worry about picking Support Persona yet.

Elements: Certain creatures and many Persona hold a Weakness to certain types of Elemental Damage. By Default targeting this weakness with the Element will Prone on successful Direct Damage and deal an additional 20% Damage(Round up.) I.E. Your Persona is weak against Poison. A mixed Acid/Poison AoE Blast will Prone you! The 3 Poison Ongoing(Save Ends) it applies to you will not but will be buffed to 4 Poison!

quote:

Decided to adjust how Elemental Weaknesses work.

If you target an enemy's weakness they will still take +20% extra damage and be knocked Prone at a limit of once per every other round.

PCs will take 20% extra damage from weaknesses but not be knocked Prone. However, many enemies will have their own effects that activate when they strike weaknesses(including sometimes knocking the PC Prone.)

Overseer: Every Party in Digital Devil Worlds may receive guidance and contribution from a Player who does not actively fight with the group. Instead they can offer tactical support by analyzing enemies and sharing information learned about them through in-game Lore related skills. They also buff the Party they assist with passive auras or in the case of particularly talented Overseers active spells that can target the entire battlefield. The capabilities of any Overseer tend to be different from any other Overseer. Aside from making NPCs more helpful this is an option I'm testing in case of long or unusual PC AFKs.

Communication: Due to the wonders of modern technology anyone who will willingly share their information with you can be contacted by you. You can Call or Text others freely assuming nothing would stop you from doing so. Can't text in your sleep or if your phone is lost and you're sitting on a train, naturally. Likewise you can use Chitter(tm) to broadcast short thoughts to anyone who is friends with you! Online you can glimpse the status and availability of others by befriending them and exchanging contact information. Without this information you cannot determine if someone is Online without seeing their in-game Avatar.

You may also send these messages in public, private or team-speak at any time to the other PCs while online. Text or voice may be used to communicate in all channels online.

Fin

That's all. As always I'm Doomykins on Steam, I have PMs here on SA and my e-mail is Doomykins@gmail.com. If you have any questions fire away and I'd like to see most of the characters done and ready to go by next Friday, July 1st!

Tsukiyo Taiyo Chavez/"Flagelo"

The high-strung and serious member of the Kendo Club, Tsukiyo is considered a cool beauty and a stickler to the rules that inspires both admiration and awe from her fellow students. Some say her diligence and hard working ethics come from her strict grandmother, Clara Chavez, the current grandmaster of the Sombra Serpenteante Brazilian Kenjutsu style. While popular within her club as a reliable yet strict member, she usually keeps a respectful distance from the other members.

Yet this refined exterior hides a darker side of her personality. The enormous pressure put upon her by her family to become as good and successful as her elder brother, Genjuro, a college student and a 3-dan master of Kenjutsu, has driven her to vent her pent up emotions and aggression in DDW. Creating a new identity as "Flagelo", the Scourge, she has started to play as a rampaging PVPer, dueling other new and using them as punching bags for her frustrations. By using a series of proxies she manages to keep her identity unknown, as she has a deep held shame of this unsightly side of her...

Family Members:

Clara Chavez: Matriarch of the family and a Kenjutsu Grandmaster, she's a hardened woman in her late sixties that still holds much of her former physical prowess and a hard will that is imposed towards the family.

Genjuro: Tsukiyo's elder brother, he's a 23-year old youth on his last year of Law school and the family's heir, he's a laid-back prodigy who despite not putting much effort in his training and studies, is still incredibly successful in both.

Tatsumi Sato | Capo Kappo

Tatsumi Sato was born in Tokyo, though when he was almost 2 years old his parents moved with him to San Francisco where his father ran a small but successful restaurant. As many children do, Tatsumi wanted to follow in his footsteps, and for as long as he could recall wanted to be a chef. He helped in his father's restaurant when he was old enough, or in the kitchen at home with his mother, and a lot of his free time was spent watching cooking shows on TV or online. Aside from that motivation he was a fairly normal (if somewhat awkward) child.

His mother and father had discussed sending him to a private school specializing in the culinary arts to help encourage his interest, but there just wasn't enough money to make that happen. But his father had another idea. He had learned to cook in the detail-oriented restaurants of Tokyo, which even in his day had a booming and elite dining scene. Many think of Paris or New York when they consider food destinations, but Japanese restaurants were awarded a far greater number of Michelin stars. Coupled with the different culture and standards to education and schooling, they talked it over as a family and made the decision to send Tatsumi back to Japan where he'd live with his grandmother Tsuruko in the suburbs. The plan was he'd go to school, maybe join a club or two if there was a culinary program, and get a job washing dishes or bussing tables until working his way enough to learn prep work, then actual cooking.

But Grandma had other ideas. She was happy to have her grandson in the home, but was worried about Tatsumi. Even before coming to Japan he was fairly withdrawn, and things only got worse coming to a new country and uprooting his whole life despite the fact he was on-board with the idea. "Children should be children" she would always say, and one of her first edicts would be no job until he was stable at school, complete with good grades and a social life. She also would continue doing the cooking in the home, though Tatsumi was welcome to help out. Obaasan also bought him some video games, with the condition that they'd go away if his schoolwork suffered or he spent all his time holed up in his room.

So it was that he logged on to DDW and made his character. While he's still a bit shy and introverted, he did make it through the initial guild application process and has been learning the ropes. The fact that he could make his online avatar a skilled chef, complete with comically-oversized kitchen knives, saute pan, and other implements to defeat his enemies with certainly helped. Even if he wasn't in the kitchen, his somewhat singular focus would still shine through a bit. But would this be enough branching out to help him grow up in a healthy way?

Takashi Kurokawa | .attak

Before he had turned 4 years old, Takashi Kurokawa’s parents were killed in what is still considered one of the most violent crimes in recent Japanese history. Satoru Kurokawa was an up-and-coming Underboss in the yakuza, helped in no small part by his blood-relation to the Oyabun of the Kurokawa-gumi crime family. While sitting with his wife, Kaoruko-san, in a small American themed burger restaurant they had frequented for many years, four men in motorcycle helmets entered the diner. Immediately pulling compact automatic pistols from their jackets, the men emptied 8 magazines, close to 160 rounds, into the couple and 28 other civilians, including 6 workers. Takashi was safely at home with his caregiver at the time. It was later revealed that Satoru was executed by the Tsuji-kai gang, which was about to separate from the core Kurokawa-gumi family. In the aftermath, Satoru’s brother Kaname, who was himself a successful Underboss, adopted Takashi to care for the young boy.

Takashi grew up in his uncle’s household, Oji Kaname-sama, and Oba Hanamako-sama are the only parents he has ever known. It was many years before Takashi’s adopted parents revealed what really happened to his biological parents, but his childhood was not a bad one. His uncle’s wealth meant that he received a fine education, had vast opportunities for extra-curriculars, and he channeled those advantages into giving back to those around him. Inspired by the yakuza’s response to the 1995 Kobe earthquake and later to the Fukushima incident in 2011, Takashi began to organize community outreach programs, leading students his age in efforts to improve the local community; picking up litter after school, volunteer work, providing food for the poor, or organizing weekend events for the elderly to get them out of their homes and back into society. Takashi had always been an outgoing person, but these gave him a way to connect with those around him, and do something that had no victims. He had never been interested in the family business, further pushed away by finding out it lead to his parents’ death. In the years since then, Uncle Kaname became the regional Oyabun of the Kurokawa-gumi, reporting directly to his uncle (Takashi’s great uncle), the head of the Kurokawa-gumi. Kaname’s eldest child, Kouta, is two years older than Takashi, and while still in high school, is already working his way up the yakuza ladder. He also has three daughters, but the closest to Takashi and Kouta’s age is only eleven.

A natural athlete with aggressively good looks, Takashi is incredibly active on social media; he regularly releases content on Autograph, Chitter, etc., and is what most people would call “addicted.” It was through Autograph that he discovered Digital Devil Worlds, and drawn by chance to expand his social network, he created an avatar. Almost immediately, he was hooked. Recently entering Naoki Academy, Takashi has set his sights on catapulting his former successes in the Track Club and Social Outreach Club at secondary school into Captain-ships in high school.

Original art by Doomfest, edited by Mortify.
Ryuka Mitsugu/Lyth

Ryuka Mitsugu is the spoiled, youngest child of an influential businessman. Whatever she wants, she gets; no questions asked. Her mother, in particular, dotes on her whenever possible. She has developed a certain disregard for people and things as a result, treating them like toys to be discarded when she's done with them.

However, she is also extremely possessive of the things she cherishes the most. Although she finds it difficult to form deep bonds with people, the few close friends she does have are more important to her than anything. Not that she would ever let them know that.

Ryudori, Ryuka's older sister and fledgling mechanic, often encourages her bratty behavior to get a laugh. On the other hand, her older brother, Ryushian, often steps in to settle things down between the two. He also acts as a mentor figure for Ryuka, as their father is usually away on business. Although they're usually bickering, all three of them share a strong sibling bond.

At school, Ryuka claims to be one of the popular kids... but the only people she hangs out with are her two lackeys. Noriko rigidly structures the day for Ryuka, making sure things get done when they should, and making sure no one gets in Ryuka's way. Hiroko, on the other hand, is too timid to disobey Ryuka, and mostly falls in line because she's the only girl she knows at school. Even though Ryuka likes to remind everybody how rich her father is, everyone seems to ignore her.

At home, she has a secret, guilty pleasure: Digital Devil Worlds. A friend introduced her to an online, dragon-themed roleplaying forum, and soon thereafter DDW. She fell in love with draconic myths and lore, and DDW indulged her with Lyth, a diminutive, fiery dragon-rabbit hybrid. She's extremely bossy in parties, but at least tries to help them succeed. After all, if they lose, she won't get her loot. If she doesn't get her loot, she can't advance her character's storyline. That would be completely unacceptable!

The setting is technically the real world ten years from now without thinking too much about that sort of thing. You can just assume trends continue in such a (relatively) short period. I didn't want to create a tech level that doesn't make sense or is too advanced but I also didn't want to hear a bunch of wise-assing about CURRENT POLITICAL CLIMATE or CURRENT SOCIAL ISSUE.

Felix Bedford III is the only son of Martha and Felix Bedford II. His mother, Martha Bedford (née Wolfram) is a German prodigy who specializes in Asiatic languages and the translation thereof; she is also an avid MMORPG-gamer and yoga nut. His father, Felix Bedford II, is a British logistics specialist and amateur mechanical engineer who enjoys making elaborate clockwork devices while puffing on his great-great grandfather's massive calabash pipe on the rare occasion he has "nothing else to do".

Neither Martha nor Felix II have a lot of money. In fact, they are up to their eyeballs in debt. To make things worse: something always seems to come up to prevent them from changing their increasingly difficult financial situation. Their jobs are the only things keeping them from defaulting completely on their debts, even if every move their jobs require them to make makes the relationship between the Bedfords and their bank's ledger more perilous. If you would ask them about what they did for a living, however, Martha and Felix II would tell you that they do in fact enjoy what they do, and would continue to say that their jobs have allowed them to travel the world as a family, which is certainly a rare perk to find in the job market these days––no matter how shite the pay!

In spite of their thoroughly rotten financial situation, they live happy, humble lives. Martha and Felix II are deeply in love with one another, and they do their best to see their beloved young son never wants for anything.

The Bedfords have been living in Japan for about half a year, having moved there from Germany, and before that, Canada. Felix III already has a good grip on the Japanese language though, thanks to his mother, and is enjoying his new home for the most part even though he craves a social life that doesn't seem easily forthcoming. He is an avid martial arts enthusiast and has joined a martial arts club to meet new people and satisfy his martial interests. School is an intimidating prospect that will be starting soon, and he's not sure how it will go. He is a pleasant, quiet, mild-mannered young man; is quick to smile; is studious and dedicated; but the culture shock of living in a new place is quite intense for him. He feels very out of his depth, yet he accepts it somehow––hence his screen name "Brackish_Gaijin".

Digital Devil Worlds fulfills several needs for Felix. He has always loved MMORPGs (his mom's fault, according to his dad), it is yet another way of networking in his new home, and it helps him get used to colloquial Japanese. He's created a ninja-like assassin inspired by his growing interest in Japanese ancient martial culture, and has so far logged several hours' play. He plays (what he feels is) the consummate ninja: the envy of every cheesy Hollywood or major Asian action flick.

Well folks. This is my first PbP character. I hope it's up to scratch (I'm a no0b, but I'm an eager no0b :)) I need to learn how to link the "pre" Quick Reference Character sheet, as Poultron has done for Lyth, and any other tips, tricks, or links would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, all! Here's to an awesome game!

Here's the pre sheet Combat Block. I think I did some of it right. What I don't understand I've indicated with question marks. I know for a fact that I did the passives incorrectly, so I'll be back to change them, but for now:

pre:
Brackish_Gaijin
HP: 32/32 AC:	16	Passive Insight: 10
Surges: 7/7 (V: 8)	For:	13	Passive Perception: 10
Initiative: +6 Ref:	17	Action Points: 1
Speed: 6 Will:	15	Fortune Points: 2
Languages: Common, Damaran	Vision: Normal

At Will Encounter Daily
Ninja-to Rush [ ] Heroic Effort [ ] Summon the Mists
Poisonous Shuriken	[ ] Assassin's Strike [ ]
Whirling Kusari-gama	[ ]
			[ ]
			[ ]
			[ ]
			[ ]
			[ ]

Passives:.
Attack Finesse (Executioner) - 1/turn, deal 1d8/2d8/3d8 (by tier) extra dmg with a weapon attack using a one-handed weapon, garrote, blowgun, or shortbow.
Quick Swap (Executioner) - 1/turn, Brackish_Gaijin can draw or stow a weapon as a free action, and then draw another weapon.
Way of the Ninja - Gain at-will powers; gain proficiency with shuriken and kusari-gama and assassin class features apply to these weapons.
Death Attack - An enemy Brackish_Gaijin hits and damages with a melee/ranged attack is left with 10 HP or fewer: may automatically reduce to 0 HP.
Versatile Defense - When using a bow, +1/2/3 (by tier) to attack, +1/2/3 (by tier) damage to one creature that isn't adjacent to other creatures.

I've also edited my character's background slightly for more Poor.

You can just quote my post and copy the code for it. Obviously put in your own character's stats!

A good first character! Your other relatives will be an extended family that loves to visit. We'll leave it at that for now.

I think your backstory paints the picture of being a little too well off for Poor, but only slightly. Maybe those debts are bigger than Felix has heard.

I think you're right. Maybe Martha's family isn't wealthy at all, and both she and her husband are up to their eyeballs in student debt and bad investments. Maybe Felix's grandfather's health requires him to receive expensive homecare, a debt the family must assume, that further impairs their financial mobility. Perhaps they have a contract with a multinational corporation, instead of the Japanese gov't, that pays them just enough to keep the interest on their debts at bay, but only just enough. And with every move, the family seems to fall deeper below The Red. Actually, that seems a lot more plausible.

I understand that there are worse forms of poverty than crippling debt, but that kind of poor is really the only kind of poor I can think of that would still justify a Western family moving to Japan, since my character (and I) know very little about Japanese culture and will be learning it by immersion/trial and error.

I'll revisit the family's poverty this evening when I get off work. I'll also post the Pre sheet for ease of reference.

Also thinking of joining Tsukiyo Taiyo Chavez/"Flagelo"'s Kendo Club.

:)

I just updated my original reply to include a butchered pre sheet and a few modifications in Bracky's background to reflect slightly more Poor.

I hope that's okay.

I will be working on that pre though. I know it's not up to scratch, but hey, I'm learnding :downs:

It's called a combat block, not a "pre"

EDIT: The V stands for Value, as in your Surge Value. Read the OP to learn about Fortune Points.

Parents: Mother Only
Siblings: Only Child
Other Relatives: Grandmother lives with
Home Situation: Poor

Name: Noriko Mori
Blood Type: AB
Hobbies: Flower Arrangement, Fashion (the occult, death)

Noriko entered junior high school as one of the most popular girls in her class. She had no trouble earning good grades, she easily slid into her position as president of the Flower Arrangement club, and her sense of fashion and cheerful demeanor rose her to "idol" status among her peers. At home, she was the middle of three children, with loving parents who provided her with everything she needed, and though her father was frequently absent due to his work, he tried to make it up to them with a family vacation every summer, until the accident anyway.

They had been driving back to their summer home from a trip to the beach. She was sitting in the front seat and her sisters were behind her, and they had been bickering over something unimportant. She unbuckled her seatbelt for just a moment, turning around in her chair to smack her older sister when her father suddenly slammed on the breaks and swerved, turning too late to avoid the truck careening into their lane. She was thrown from the car in the crash, bouncing across the pavement before coming to a stop in the shade of a tree. Her limbs twisted and broken, she could do little but watch as her family was burned alive in their disabled vehicle.

Noriko returned to school a changed person. Superficially, she was still Noriko, but she had lost her bubbly personality and her cheerful smile. Her flower arrangements were as masterful as ever, but they inspired a sort of melancholy that they had not before. Her grades had not slipped, but writing and poetry projects took a grim turn. At home, she was no longer sleeping. Two or three hours a night, and what little sleep she could get was plagued with nightmares. When summer came again, she stayed in, pouring over obscure texts from the occult section of the library, posting on morbid BBSes and making poor attempts at communing with the dead.

As Noriko's interests have become increasingly more intense, they have also become increasingly more expensive, and she has taken on a part-time job as an assistant to a mortician, arranging flowers for the dead and helping with the burial rituals. Though she takes great pride in her work, she has had to keep it secret due to the cultural taboo towards those who work with the dead.

Noriko's extreme insomnia has lead her down many avenues of escape, and DDW is the latest.
