All I know about fire emblem is that Roy was my fave character in super smash brothers melee

I played something fire emblem on game boy advance for a few hours, and it was like advance wars but humourless

People really seem to like the series, though, which is great! Wasn't it Japan-only until fairly recently?

I've fallen off Final Fantasy X. The two-to-three second delay after every line of spoken dialogue started to grate

I might read a synopsis of the plot (because I don't remember much of it from having beaten the game ten years ago) and jump into X2, wish me luck :)

I'm also really unclear on the enemy movement rules and I hate that. I never know when they are gonna get a magical free move in the middle of my turn and gently caress everything up.

The first moment an alien group spots you, they get to run for cover for free. Some of the tougher enemies might set up an Overwatch instead of moving. This happens regardless of whose turn it is. This is why you don't send your last dude with available actions off exploring, in case you trigger an alien group and give them a whole turn to shoot you down. You have to be conservative.

They won't shoot you until it's their turn.

One general tip I can give is to abuse explosives. An alien killed by an explosion won't give you any weapon fragments but dead aliens can't shoot you. Also destroying the cover aliens are hiding behind is a fantastic way to start a turn.

Apropos of nothing: I randomly stumbled onto some old Left 4 Dead stuff earlier today, and upon reflection it surprises me that Valve just sort of dropped the series after L4D2. I get it, Valve can't do a third game, yuk yuk yuk, but I remember those games being super popular for a significant span of time.

It feels like Valve haven't developed a new game in years

I've returned to The Witcher 3 after spending a moment to read up on the background lore and stuff, and I like it and it's good but I kind of wish someone made a game like it, with similar political themes, only set it in the real world.

Like, Final Fantasy Tactics would have been better if it were just literally the War of the Roses, IMO. And The Witcher 3 would be more interesting to me if it were just literally the Napoleonic Wars or whatever it's trying to crib

Edutainment is the name of the game!

Witcher 3 is a good game! Combat is still a little button-mash-y, but I've learnt to use bombs and potions and stuff, so I've been able to push the difficulty level up to Normal!

I've been burnt a few times by the open world design, such as running into bandits ten levels higher than me while on my way to complete a low-level quest. And I'm constantly at low amounts of money because of the constant repairs my equipment seems to need. I might have to sell some of by buckets of ghoul blood, which hurts.

The writing is top-notch. A quest to escort a goat through the woods is made bearable by Geralt the Witcher's quips. I had to read a lore guide online to understand the backstory, but now that I've done that I'm able to appreciate things a whole lot more!

also I'm a big proponent of turning off the minimap. The minimap turns all the investigation bits into an annoying chore of searching around the radius on the minimap. With the minimap off, you actually get/have to use your powers of observation and witcher senses. It's much more dynamic and fun. Also you will learn to use road more instead of just booking it cross country in straight lines, skyrim style.

But I am a crazy person.

The Detective Mode stuff already feels pixel-hunting-y enough, but I suppose I can try that. I don't think you're crazy.
