WickedHate posted:Land's stuff is photorealistic because he blatantly traces everything, and like half of it from porn. Yeah, we bitch about him a lot in the X-thread. If you ask me he's the single worst artist working in comics today, and he continues to get work despite blatant ripping off of other artists and recycling his own work and tracing googled images, because he's super fast and never ever misses a deadline. A lot of people not on this site or, shall we say, more progressive comics sites love him, though, because he draws pretty ladies posing like they were 90s playboy covers. They don't care that literally every woman he draws looks exactly the same with different hair. I just read the 2008-2009ish X-books and going from Skottie Young drawing Pixie in New X-Men to Land drawing her in Uncanny gave me whiplash.

JoshTheStampede posted:Huh. I really like Ramos, now and earlier, and I also really like latter-day Bachalo which is similar. It's obviously very anime-inspired and I don't really like anime very much (despite my username), but something about that graffiti-style art they do I really like. It's way better than the photorealistic stuff like Deodato/Land/Whoever, to me - at least when people are drawn making surprised faces in a cartoony way it doesn't look like a Tom Goes To The Mayor sketch. Bachalo probably shouldn't draw a comic with 3 long haired blondes in black costumes though. You frequently can't tell who is supposed to be Magik, Emma or the blonde cuckoo.

I don't like Land at all, but I can tolerate him more than I can other artists I have a particular dislike for. Like modern Kyle Baker's poser art for example which is the worst of the worst for me. Land usually gets paired up with decent writers which kind of softens the blow.

I was really excited to get to Matt Fraction and Kieron Gillen's Uncanny runs, but they are basically ruined by Land. I guess I just really really don't like "photorealistic" style comic art.

Land on a book I like is bad news, but I probably hate Dillon's art more because it's harder to mitigate by a good colorist. I'm surprised I even put up with it for Aaron's Punisher MAX. At least Dillon is just a lovely lazy artist and not a thief like Land is.

Alaois posted:are you thinking of a different artist because i am not seeing very much of this in any examples i looked up Yeah, I'm not sure what they are on about. Old Bachalo (like, Death The High Cost of Living) is completely different than New Bachalo, where he definitely does get some influence from anime and grafitti-style "urban art" or whatever you want to call it when people all look like they are wearing skater jeans and have tiny mouths and huge hands and feet, but the eyes are never really that iconic big anime look. \/\/ I'm sure I would hate him on some more realistic or gritty thing like The Punisher or something, but mostly I'm familiar with his X-Men stuff and I love it. Yeah, I love Bachalo on certain sorts of things and there's plenty to complain about his work otherwise, but huge eyes is not one of them.

For instance Bachalo is pretty much perfect for where is now, drawing weird rear end poo poo Dr. Strange.

I went to Supercon in Miami Beach today and met one of my lifelong favorite writers, Keith Giffen, who signed dozens of comics, TPBs, and custom bound hardcover books I schlepped in a big suitcase. I also met Fabian Nicieza and Greg Capullo, and all three were very friendly, chatty, and gracious. Then my buddy and I also met William Shatner, who just nodded politely when we told him it was an honor to meet him. We were in his presence for about ten seconds for a photo op, but my friend was absolutely giddy over it (my birthday present to him). Other than that, the dealer hall was a huge disappointment, with very few comic book dealers. Most people were selling anime tchotchkes, retro video games, T-shirts, and Etsy/DeviantArt-style arts and crafts. I spent $.50 on two Convergence tie-in issues, and couldn't find anything else I wanted or "needed."

It bothers me a bit that we have, as industry and a community, finally started to put women in comics into reasonable outfits (as reasonable as the men's anyway) and let them have a driving visual aesthetic behind their design other than "sex object for a specific demographic", but then Magik has managed to backslide from full bodysuit with armor into crop top black leather bondage gear showing off her new bikini wax.

The thing is that any progress you see is the work of individual creators, and there's still a bunch of Frank Chos working in the industry who do not and will never care.

I'm not really too keen on photorealism. But my favourite artists tend to be guys like Mike Wieringo, Alan Davis, Carlos Pacheco and Mark Bagley and older guys like Pérez and even Byrne in the 1980s, and I guess they're all "photorealistic" in their own way, aren't they?
