Oh, I am right there with you, friend. I'm not gonna pretend I have the best strategy for Special Stages, but I try to stay as practical and pragmatic as I can. Clearing boxes clears space, and you almost never need to jump at all if you do it right. I clearly played the first half WAY more than the second, because I have much crisper memories of where Giant Rings are in Angel Island Zone and Carnival Night Zone than I do Sandopolis Zone. Anyway, let's see if we can't get the last of the Chaos Emeralds nice and early. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HD5m08Prd54

There's no commentary in the most recent Sonic3K video you uploaded to your channel.

Eyyyyup. That was Attempt #2 at uploading that video -- first upload had a real nasty video glitch that desynched the game audio and game video, so I had to re-edit it. ...and I forgot to un-solo the game audio, so all the commentary was muted. Sigh. Exported a third time, looks good. Parts 4-5 coming tomorrow, and 6 and 7'll go up Saturday and Sunday, so it's not just a crazy flood of Sonic 3 & Knuckles videos.

My personal shame is that I never understood the bubble mechanic in hydrocity so the drowning always killed me. Set that tune as your alarm clock music. You will get your rear end out of bed so fast

Oh my god, that's demonic. Might have to try that, I've actually been having alarm clock issues lately. Anyway, I think we've created a demon... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nns6DP_tL10 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwk_tn3ea1c

No worries, I definitely struggled with Sandopolis Zone a LOT as a kid (and for sure is the reason I loathe desert levels in Sonic games to this day). But we're past that now, and onto bigger and better things! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qfmSSZP6Q4

The trick is whacking him IMMEDIATELY upon getting down there. He takes a few seconds to "warm up", and he's actually the only boss in the game that you can beat before the boss music gets a chance to be triggered in the first place. Yup, I've had a plan for Waku Waku for a little while now (I was unaware when we began that it was successfully dumped). You'll be seeing it real soon.

Apparently the game that was built into a popcorn machine has also been dumped but not the Raiden clone. 90's Japanese arcade games are loving weird.

Yeah, I've got the sonic 3 special stages basically memorized but I still haven't gotten super sonic in 2 without the debug code.

TBD. I've been rolling the idea around, and due to other things we're planning, it may or may not fit nicely into the schedule (and soon, at that). The only reason I even remembered to ask was because the amazing soundtrack randomly popped into my head today. It really sucks that it came out for the genesis around the same time that Sega was shooting themselves in the foot with a 32 bit bullet.

Yup, after Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Ristar was the last thing Sonic Team did before it got down on all fours and let the terrible decision that was the Sega 32X run the train on them that would be followed quickly by the Saturn and the Dreamcast. And yes, that soundtrack is loving unreal in quality. Arguably one of the best the system had to offer. In case anyone in here hasn't seen it yet, we FINALLY brought back D-Pad + Chill this weekend! And gently caress me, these episodes were WEIRD. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cc4NYYltWfo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=noBrJ-4-S5Y

Eh, at the time Sonic Adventure was amazing. It just has not aged well at all. Sonic Adventure 2 looks better (Due to Battle's graphical update) but they seemed to learn all the wrong lessons from SA1. And then we enter the dark times. e: I just watched that second Dpad and chill. Were drugs more potent in the 90's or something? Did I miss out? I suppose a fairer statement would have excluded the Dreamcast, since it tried its absolute damnedest to save Sega, but the damage was already done before it even launched. And the Sonic Adventure series is still fantastic today (despite astonishingly primitive cutscenes and controls schemes that seem to plague Sonic Team to this day). I'd happily take Sonic Adventure 3 any day now (which is what I have a sneaking suspicion "Sonic 2017" might end up being). Kurieg posted:And then we enter the dark times. Yes and no. Are you saying the handheld versions of Colors and Generations are better than the console versions? Also, when you get around to those games, which versions are you going to do?

Haven't played Colors myself, but I've heard very good things (especially compared to the mountains of poo poo all around it). As far as versions, for Generations we're actually pretty likely to try both, since there are level differences between them. Same may go for Colors for the same reason, I need to do a little research when we get close. As far as which versions are better, I can't say -- what I meant was more that in the last 12 years, a new handheld Sonic was more likely to be a quality game than a new console Sonic.

Good lord, Sonic 4 (Episode I, anyway) is essentially part of the triumverate of games I'm dreading as a part of this whole thing (the other two being Sonic 2006 and Sonic Boom). There's a reason I wasn't too broken up about our recording setup not working properly with it back in 2011. I'm actually really intrigued by the idea of Chronicles of the Dark Brotherhood, partly because not long before it was announced, I was noodling around with ideas for how to make a Sonic RPG work without losing the core aspects of what makes Sonic Sonic. I've actually heard surprisingly little about CDB, come to think of it.

If you're considering playing different versions of games, you may want to consider Sonic Unleashed too. From what I heard, the Wii version plays differently compared to the version on the other consoles. EDIT: I saw a LP of CDB on the forums. There's a reason why there aren't more Sonic RPGs. It does in the sense that the wii version is a downgrade of the PS360 version. It's the same gameplay but you have less options in what you do, less levels, and worse graphics. Also you don't have any options in how you level up, you unlock capacity and werehog moves in rigid order as you progress through the game. I've played both of them, If you have the option of playing the PS360 version you can just ignore that the Wii version exists. ricdesi posted:I'm actually really intrigued by the idea of Chronicles of the Dark Brotherhood, partly because not long before it was announced, I was noodling around with ideas for how to make a Sonic RPG work without losing the core aspects of what makes Sonic Sonic. I've actually heard surprisingly little about CDB, come to think of it. Basically the only thing you need to know about Dark Brotherhood is that shortly before it's release they lost the rights to almost all of the music they were going to use, forcing them to download Midis off the internet and crudely map them on a one-to-one basis to the DS's sound channels and instruments. In some cases there weren't enough channels for the instruments. This is what you will be listening to for 30 hours e: Remember Big Arm? The gameplay is mediocre to average with a whole bunch of really fiddly Elite Beat Agents style controls to do every single attack, and the plot vacillates back and forth between fourth wall breaking humor and ripping off the Archie comics. Selective memory on my part, or porting issues?
