DAIJOUBU!! ... Daijoubu ?? ?

Traveling along a darkened path in the forest, you realize immediately that you're lost. But what's that in the clearing? Could it possibly be shelter? Well it certainly gives the appearance of a hotel but something about it all seems to be quite unsettling. The problem is that it's ever so late and you're feeling ever so tired. So your options are limited...but good news! The manager is still up at such a late hour and he's willing to lend you a room for the night....or possibly for the rest of your life!

And thus we have the basic setup for Gregory Horror Show; originally a fairly long series of 2 minute long CG shorts by Naomi Iwata, the PS2 game is more or less a playable version of the overall series. The game itself though follows our character as he (or she, depending on your gender choices) is enrolled by Death to obtain some errant souls that have been taken by the nefarious residences of Gregory's horror hotel. And to do this will take a mixture of stealth, cunning, and a whole lotta luck as the denizens of the hotel are not going to just up and give us their stolen souls. Thankfully I'm at least semi-competent and up to the task at hand; so hopefully you'll enjoy our adventure into this odd slice of dark humor.

And finally, I've tried to make this run as clean and thorough as possible. I'm not the most super knowledgeable at the game and if I miss something of interest that you feel would be worth showing off, then please tell me. But if at all possible NO SPOILERS as this will probably be a new experience for most folks.

This is Gregory; he's a super helpful guy and the manager of the hotel. Probably would be best to stay on his good side though.

This is Death; he's just looking to collect some stray souls but he needs a little help. Also he gives mad props to Ingmar Bergman for that classy representation.

This is Neko Zombie; a ravenous cat with a taste for sweet treats. What could have led to his sewing mishap and is it alright to help him?

This is James; grandson to Gregory and generally precocious kid. Also a poster boy for why parents need to use condoms.

This is Catherine; a pink, dinosaur with a very interesting fetish. She's always on the lookout to give an unsuspecting person a lil' poke.

This is Judgement Boy; he's a man of the people who likes to dole out his advice. Take heed of what he says because he's yelling it at you.

This is Lost Doll; sad and lonely, she's just on the lookout for her missing doll. But look and don't touch as this doll comes with a nasty surprise.

This is Mummy Papa and Mummy Dog; a pair of attention seeking dogs with a bizarre malady and the worst set of headaches you could imagine.

This is Cactus Gunman and Cactus Girl; a pair of revolutionaries on the run from the law. Beware picking a fight with the shakiest gun in the Ol' West.

This is Hell's Chef; the resident cook and culinary masochist of the hotel. The only thing that hotter than his burning passion is his hatred of tobacco.

This is TV Fish; part tv, part fish, part dream weaver. This mysterious beast roams the halls of the hotel, it's natural habit, looking for nothing more than peace and quiet.

This is Roulette Boy; you gotta spin to win or else this bad boy might just deal you the Dead Man's Hand. That's the most dangerous of high fives.

This is Clock Master and My Son; they're a father and son duo who have control over time and a deep abiding love for one another. Just never get in the way of that familial bond...or else.

This is Angel Dog/Devil Dog; an enigmatic figure with the power to bring you to fate's doorstep. The question lies in what is truly waiting on the other side of that door.

This is Judgement Boy Gold; he's a lot like the normal Judgement Boy except he's gold and mostly correct on things. But it's still a crap a shoot in regards to what he'll answer or be useful about.

This is you...or maybe it's me? It's hard to say what our identity is but our mission is clear....I think?

Lost Doll's Horror Show
Mummy Papa's Horror Show
Cactus Gun's Horror Show

I've also been waiting for somebody to tackle this one since Jamesman dropped it all those years back. Enjoyed the animated shorts a while back, something about this Animal Crossing in Hell setting really amuses me. Really excited to see this one through, happy you're the one doing it!

Sadly no, it only got a PAL and Japanese release. I can understand that a bit though considering it's a particularly niche title. What I'm more surprised by is that Capcom made it and also apparently the designer for the game was also behind such hit classics as Megaman X8 (which I think was the one with robotic space Jesus), Resident Evil: Dead Aim, and two of the recent Platinum licensed games. Definitely an illustrious career there I should say.

Well here's to hoping I can make it past where he did; and I don't know if it would help but I think the episodes are uploaded on youtube. So I can kinda give a link to those that match up with where we are in the game if anyone is curious.

At first I thought this game was a minecraft mod but it's apparently way older? Errything being squares kinda freaks me out, but not in the horror way.

I'm also kinda having problems thinking how that stuff can be horrifying though, aside from the Cat Zombie clearly being a lady while being called a man, which I think is horribly miscast. :colbert:

What were the age demographics for the game intended to be? Is this gonna be full of blood and poo poo while being aimed at 7 year olds or something?

And yeah it's not really a horror game so much as... surreal? More Rocky Horror than Friday the 13th.

Just spacing stuff out I suppose; was probably going to update the thread tonight and do commentary for part 3 this weekend. It's just the spacing of the videos was weird because I don't like to have two threads going anymore cause people poo poo on me for it so long ago, but I wanted to make sure the initial video was alright and then people wanted the next part since it had been a week. It's just a whole rigmarole.

It's an adaptation of a CGI anime.

To tide you lovely people over the weekend; it's our first real effort into taking a lost soul by force and we do it in true Solid Snake fashion.

Also for those worried about if we're going to see a horror show, rest assured that we will be but it'll be in the next video (there's actually no way to leave the room again with the soul in the tutorial until you go to sleep).

VVVV
Yeah, I think that since the entire anime was done by the time this game came out that they had a full cast of characters and wanted to use them all, but not entirely worry about trying to flesh out the back stories that the anime gave.

It's funny that this game follows the plot set up of the first season of the series, but a lot of CGI clips, especially near the end, were taken from the second.

What was the player character suffering from in the Bonus Video, what with his blurry vision and angry animé vein on his character portrait?

Also, is the game any different if you had chosen to play it as a girl guest?

Oh, there are a number of status aliments you can get over the course of the game and I'll cover those a bit in the next video when we really start to see them. But in the case of that affliction, it's a 'headache' and all it does is make you get hit by an additional tick of health loss in addition to the normal amount it goes down.

And as far as I can tell, no, picking the gender is merely cosmetic. So I'm assuming that Catherine might still have the hots for our red blooded hero even if it were to be a lady.

So I watched Season 1 and most of Season 2.
All I can say is that season 1 can definately be termed as horror with a whole lot of subtlety about the themes represented. It's darn near creepy for the most part.
Season 2 is way more blunt and nowhere near as creepy in fact it seems to have taken a comedic tone and Gregory seems to be on the receiving end of alot of the punchlines.
Haven't gone into season 3, I don't know what to expect once there.

I wish I could say I remembered but it's been a while; I was trying to remember if that was the one that focused on Catherine and brought up Gregory's copy of Erotic Nights that James found, but then I remembered that was season 2 I think.

Also an interesting bit that I only found after replaying this last bit, but if you get the porn from Catherine's room and then peek in there later she'll be angrily stabbing the bed and blaming....James for the theft! Which I feel is a nice little throw back to James and the porno from the anime.

As the game progresses, each person seems to start to react differently. Like as I've been doing night two, Neko Zombie will say that I'm doing a good job in his sleep and I'm fairly certain that Judgement Boy will say other things (though I don't think I've gotten him to react to other items, like I went back to get Erotic Nights and he didn't seem to care about it). Though that does make me wonder, if we can keep getting certain items does that mean we can keep using them as distractions or tools. Like forcing Gregory to go wank off by giving him the porn or getting that banana to use as a trap for Catherine again if she harasses us.

I also found something else out interesting; sometimes you can find Neko Zombie awake and hungry, and you can trade him a food item for a healing item (since it seems most of the food items are really that great at filling your gauge).

Oh I know, I just find it curious of the vocab differences in the audio vs text, it does make me wonder if they had originally consider a NA release, but either didn't think they get enough returns for their expense from doing so, or they ran into some other issue that makes it not worth it.

So the game starts to get a bit open ended as we head into the second night; we're presented with three guests that we can approach in any order. For now though, my plan of action is to intermingle hotel exploration with meeting the guests one at a time. We're definitely not in the market for getting overwhelmed are we?
