what about that couple that was all about spanking their kids? They even had a book about it. They'd just be spanking 'em all the time. They didn't even have to do anything wrong, they'd just spank them to remind them that life was cruel or something. Oh yeah, here it is: https://www.amazon.com/Train-Up-Child-Michael-Pearl/dp/1892112000 I'd suggest not doing that, personally. And if I ever catch an adult or other authority figure smacking my kid I'll lose my loving mind.

Spanking is just fine. Make sure to use only the right hand when spanking a child. Spanking with the left hand only beats more evil into the brat.

none of my siblings got spanked more than twice in our whole childhood. it was seen as the Ultimate Punishment, and we were never repeat offenders because of that. We knew that if a spanking was in order, we royally hosed up. Like when I encouraged my best friend to pump hose water into the AC outlet pipe on his house, flooding his basement. Actually I didn't even get spanked for that, because I didn't know any better. But had I, that would have been a spanking offense. Spanking is bad when it is done for any offense at all. Because kids then learn to associate authority with pain, I think, and it damages them psychologically. You can let a kid learn a lesson by letting them touch the hot stove, or spank them for trying to touch the hot stove even when you tell them not to. Some kids do not learn not to do a thing even when forcefully told not to. Obviously, this has its limits. You could, after all, let a kid learn not to jump off the loving roof like a pro wrestler by letting them do it and potentially dying.

Edgar Allan Pwned posted:I dont think spanking is inherently bad, but it seems like a lot of people just inflict pain out of fear/anger and not describe why the child deserves physical punishment? This is because there is no justifiable reason to strike a child. Shouting "YOU DESERVE TO BE HIT BECAUSE YOU TOOK TOO LONG TO EAT YOUR PEAS" just sounds silly, even to people that love beating children.

spanking is from a bygone era when children were objects born to aid parents in their elder years, or to replace a sickly/dead child that could no longer milk a cow or tend a field. there are about a billion ways to communicate your intent to a youngling without going full primate on them.

Just because you spanked your child doesn't necessarily mean that they're messed up today because of it, but it's completely unnecessary and your a lazy poo poo-for-brains. Seriously, if you can't discipline a child without spanking them, you're a loving moron and an rear end in a top hat. gently caress you.

the only time I'm really alright with spanking is if you're one of those nutjob parents that decides to have like 9 kids. with that kind of parent to kid ratio the only real way to get the point across efficiently is through some kind of negative reinforcement or threat.

There's a whole lot of academic research on negative reinforcement and the sort of decision making that happens on a unconscious level. Most parents are idiots though, so the only thing they can communicate to their kids on that level is to be afraid of them when they're angry.

My sisters got spanked way the hell less than me (because I wore my mom and dad clean out in just 9 years) and they are both better, happier, more successful people than I.

Physical discipline is good, and I can't stand seeing parents that refuse to do anything other than say "please don't do that, my dearest." to their children running around throwing forks and poo poo at the staff at a restaurant. I can't stand this no discipline thing. I agree there's a very clear line between what's okay and not with smacking some sense into a kid. But I am just so sick of this "That's just little [suburban christian, but super feminine because 20-year-old millennial parents, name] being himself." bullshit.

On the one hand, smacking your kids is good because most kids are just horrible, terrible little lovely bastards. On the other hand, the occasional whippin' might help them to shut up and learn some respect. Not seeing any down sides here.

Is spanking much of a thing in the US? In the UK it's pretty much universally accepted that it's a super lovely and abusive thing to do, and while I'm sure some people still do it, I doubt they'd be happy to admit it in public.

Lol yeah ok the nation that's the origin of the term 'Dickensian', whose default image in everyone's head is a bunch of nuns and headmasters beating and starving its filthy chimney-sweep orphans, is gonna tell the rest of the world about discipline.

Every kid had the fear of god in them about pissing off their dad back in the 80's.
