If you know me, you know I like penguins. And you know I like the penguin cam. What is the penguin cam? Let's see what the National Aviary has to say in their own words:

quote:

Get your penguin fix! It’s the National Aviary’s African Penguin cam, live from our Penguin Point exhibit! Watch them waddle, play, eat, and swim until your craving is satisfied. This well-dressed crew will make you smile!

Penguin Point features a colony of 18 African Penguins: Bette, Diana, Disco, Dottie, Elvis, Goldilocks, Happy, Kaden, Kristen, Owen, Mary Beth, Patrick, Preston, Sidney, Simon, Stanley, TJ, and Tribby.

The National Aviary is part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' (AZA) Species Survival Plans (SSP) doing our part to ensure a healthy population of African Penguins and other critically endangered birds.

Six African Penguins have been hatched at the National Aviary since 2012. They are Tribby and Kaden in 2012, Disco and Mary Beth in 2013 and Goldilocks and Happy hatched in December 2014. All six chicks hatched at the National Aviary are the offspring of penguin parents Sidney and Bette.

Two other penguins, Kristen and Owen, have extraordinarily valuable genetics related to the population within zoos and aquariums; keep your fingers crossed for little ones from these two!

Doesn't that sound adorable? Without further ado, here is the penguin cam:

http://www.aviary.org/penguin-cam

What might you see on this penguin cam? Well, lucky for you I keep it on in the background when I'm working so I've screenshoted some of the cute and funny things you might get to see live!

When penguins are trying to figure out what the hell is going on they will get as high as possible and crane their necks like so:

They often become dangerously curious in things such as flying insects and risk life and limb to follow them:

They like to sleep in tight spaces it seems, so sometimes you'll see them jam themselves between rocks:

Often the penguins are taken off to be "ambassadors" and you'll see them get picked up and passed around by their human friends:

Here's a penguin hiding over in the left corner, he later slipped and got caught between the rock and the tube, but don't worry, he made it out:

And often, especially in the evening, they'll just lay down like big fat blobs:

Every day they also have feeding time at 11 PM and 4 PM eastern time, where they all gather in the upper right part of the screen for fish snacks!

If you turn on the cam and there aren't an penguins, don't worry! Penguin Point is a big place, they're probably just wandering somewhere else or going for a swim, they'll be back soon! Oh, and one last thing - the male penguins have a little white band on their right flipper. The females have it on their left flipper. There's no way to tell specific penguins though - except Happy at the moment since he is the last penguin there who hasn't had his first molt, so he is mostly black still instead of having the stripe on his chest.

Such is the danger of the live penguin cam. They appear to all be somewhere else at the moment. But if you keep the tab open and check periodically, you're sure to see them soon enough!

I figured as soon as I posted this they would all leave the viewing area and they did, the little bastards.

Don't worry, I'm sure a fly will fly by soon enough and the penguin will spazz out and try to chase it around. They love to do that.

There was a penguin a few minutes ago who came on screen, walked all the way over to the rocks in the top corner, picked up a rock in his mouth, then walked back to where he had came from.

Silly creatures.

It should be feeding time in 25 minutes, although I'm not 100% sure they will do it over by the viewing glass today since the aviary is closed today due to a special event.

Here is a bonus pic of Bette, mother to six of the penguins at the aviary. Fun fact: she doesn't know she is their mother now that they are grown so she treats them like all the other penguins

The National Aviary owns and if you ever get a chance you should visit it. They even have a few free flight exhibits that are just big habitats with all these cool birds flying around and you can pet them and stuff too, I could spend an entire day there.

That's how I feel, I have this on almost all day at work and it keeps me sane.

They are, although they sometimes randomly fight. They never stay mad at each other though. Sometimes they will bite at each other and get fairly violent looking but after like 20 seconds they just stop and stand next to each other with no further issues for five minutes.

Penguins are awesome and even serve in the military and get knighted:

quote:

Colonel-in-Chief Sir Nils Olav is a king penguin who resides in Edinburgh Zoo, Scotland. He is the mascot and Colonel-in-Chief of the Norwegian Royal Guard.

Thanks for this OP, I am currently watching what looks like a penguin arguing with a rock.

I do this everyday, but swap "to feed the chicks" with "due to alcohol poisoning" and "ice" for "carpet" and I am a literal penguin.

Penguins also scratch their heads like dogs, as this penguin did a couple minutes ago. This penguin by the way (it's one of the females, not sure which one) often spends her nights sleeping standing up against this rock like she is doing now.
