The best game ever made was Diablo 2 and everyone has played it so much that they can't play it any more. Honorable mentions to System Shock 2, Demon's Souls, and the original X-Com.

When I wasn't wasting my early teens away on the stupid text game Moongate/Materia Magica, I mostly played Trophy Bass 2 and Lords of the Realm 2. I haven't really enjoyed any game in the same way since. Morrowind was pretty good too.

And the gameplay isn't watered down from sc2k at all. The worst thing about it is that it takes nearly as much time to get and install the mods you want as you will spend playing it. Which is to say hundreds or maybe thousands of hours.
