OP and 50+ crowd: I wrote a book a while ago where some of the characters were in their fifties and sixties. My writing group (all people in their early 20s) told me the characters didn't sound old enough, but my parents are in their mid-sixties and don't talk any differently than I do. Is there some discernibly different 'old-people' code language people start using over fifty, or am I correct in thinking that you guys don't all start talking like Cicero the moment your AARP card rolls in?

Not that I've noticed. It's more the language we don't use. We're much less likely to include goofy poo poo like "on fleek," "yolo," etc. If we do use it, it's nearly always used intentionally wrong (for comedic purposes) or ironically.

First off: happy birthday! Second: Do you have friends/peers that are your age? If so, have you told them that you use this forum and what do they think? Does your dong still work? When was the last time you got laid? Did you ever envision making it this long? You're older than my father by 4 years and thinking of him using the internet, let alone a forum makes me laugh hysterically.

My dad was 63 when he died, and I took his laptop about a year after. Looking through his stuff, and the stuff he had saved in notebooks in his laptop bag, he used the internet often. Unfortunately it was all for Uhura porn, conspiracy theory websites and that creationist guy who talks about dinosaurs being in Bible times.

Bill NYSE posted:Settle a bet, 50-and-over crowd: do you double-click hyperlinks on Internet pages? My dad does that. I asked him why and he said when he clicks stuff in Windows, it sometimes requires double clicking (a program on the desktop) and sometimes only single clicking (a program in the start menu) so he just double clicks everything to be safe.

When I was about 12 we got our first Windows XP machine and cable internet so I tried to sit my dad down and show him how to do basic stuff like check email and browse. We didn't get very far because he couldn't handle using the mouse. In lieu of resting his hand on it and moving it like a human he would push it across the mouse pad in small increments with his index finger. Last I knew he kept a stash of porn DVD's that were given to him by co-workers in a sock drawer; a simpler man from simpler times. It brings a tear to my eye and penis.
