I recall back in those days the commercials promoting the show had a young Applegate being very sexually provocative. Because she was so young looking it seemed a lot like a young teen girl doing those suggestive moves. It was very sexy.

MWC also had some of the most hilarious fight scenes of all time. Al and bud taking on the whole strip club, Al, bud and the father in law(if i recall) taking on a chicago street gang in a bad neighborhood.

The whole familys like that, they're vicious to each other but also protective. It was a big part of the shows charm. For instance Bud hates Kelly but when Cory Feldman brags about being a jerk to her, Bud gives him measles in revenge. When Tiffany amber thiessen embarrassed Bud, Kelly ties her up naked to the lockers. I also loved that Buck moment. Anyway here's Al hitting people -- the guy at the 5:30 mark does some fantastic selling https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVOQ0EKHBMY

My best MwC moment was watching it in German. In the early 90s UK satellite TV was analogue, so we got 200+ channels from France/Germany/Holland. And in Germany they dubbed over the voices in MwC. And Peggy was a gravelly MALE voice! After watching it in english, the dubs made it hilarious.

I think I covered this when I started this thread. All the bickering, and the in-fighting becomes less abrasive and gains depth because we know that the family will always stick together when the chips are down. It's one of the things that elevates Married... with Children above the copy-cat "bickering family" shows that came afterward. Good lord Lil' D is awful. Anger is never a music motif that flows well from child stars. Shoulda taken the Joey Lawrence route and used his debut track to bring some colorful joy into this world via blue-eyed new jack swing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7FtI3cmZ38

I've gotta say, I never liked this show. It is similar to me to Everybody Loves Raymond in that every character is an unhappy unlikable shithead. Which isn't funny to me. I've no doubt that Married... With Children is actually much better than Raymond, that's just the comparison I have in my mind. Perhaps op can convince me to change my mind and give it another try.

JediTalentAgent posted:In some other thread I made a comment that the show seemingly bypassed the college rock/alternative/grunge scene for the kids, didn't it? The earlier seasons had them sort of into hard rock and metal acts, Bud had his rapper phase, but it's almost like those never happened. Bud's rapper phase wasn't a mistake. He legitimately wanted to be a rapper in real life, and they made fun of this aspect on the show. No, seriously. This is good and interesting thread with proper capitalization and grammar. What's it doing in GBS? Aside from the first episode of Season 1, I think this is a show that began to get good in Season 2. Then it became great in Season 3. It really got better when Bud and Kelly got older and grew into their characters. 12 year old Bud has nothing on sexually frustrated 16 year old Bud. OctoberBlues posted:I've gotta say, I never liked this show. It is similar to me to Everybody Loves Raymond in that every character is an unhappy unlikable shithead. Which isn't funny to me. I've no doubt that Married... With Children is actually much better than Raymond, that's just the comparison I have in my mind. Once you realize that deep down, the whole family really loves each other, you'll probably see them as likable. Al talks about how he doesn't like being married but any time he has the chance to cheat, he doesn't do it. Al talks about how unfortunate he is to have kids but when Kelly turned 18 and tried to get her own apartment, he convinced her to stay because he missed her. They never get seriously angry at each other. They always defend each other against others. You get the sense that they just enjoy making sarcastic quips and playfully teasing each other. It's like a mutual understanding where they poke fun at each other and no one gets offended. None of them take anything too seriously.

The thing with M...WC is that it does everything "wrong". The characters are all extreme caricatures, the actors are chewing scenery and being over the top, the plots are unrealistic and dumb, everything is cheaply made and the jokes are hitting you hard over the head. And... it works. It's kind of a package deal. It's not just a sitcom about a dysfunctional family, it's a spoof of the entire sitcom genre.
